Review The National Parks: America's Best Idea [Blu-ray]

The National Parks: America's Best Idea [Blu-ray] Best Review

This takes a more pointed view on the history of the National Parks, and those who fought for them to be preserved for future generations. The theme that almost made me jump for the conservation effort in the last disc was the people who pushed to expand areas in Alaska. How this push to expand the National Parks was met with a lot of local opposition, and how over time, those who once opposed the expansion have seen and understand the wisdom of conservation. We live in a great country, and have been blessed with people who had the foresight to preserve these natural wonders for future generations to enjoy, and for the most part leave it untouched. Some of these people spent most of their lives fighting for the conservation effort. As for the video quality of some of the footage, what did you expect?

The video quality is kept exactly the way it was filmed on some of these 16 mm home movies. That was the evolution of film, and some of the home movies that were shown in this documentary were done with very good taste. They brought back great memories of past camping trips that I am sure my parents still have somewhere in their basement. It has that familiar warm feeling. It would have been nice to have it all in HD, but not necessary, or realistic. Remember this is a historical documentary about things that are near forgotten by most of us in the society we have. So, if it does not measure up to your idea of good quality HD, you may have missed the whole point. Do yourself a favor, and watch it again bearing in mind that this is a historical documentary.

The National Parks: America's Best Idea [Blu-ray] Overview

The National Parks (six episodes, twelve hours) tells the human history of five of the nation’s most important and most heavily visited National Parks (Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Acadia, and Great Smoky Mountains) and the unforgettable Americans who made them possible. Set against some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, each park’s story is filled with incidents and characters as gripping and fascinating as American history has to offer. Woven into the series will also be a broader, evolving story of the very idea of National Parks, as uniquely an American concept as jazz, baseball, and the Declaration of Independence as well as the expanding, constantly changing National Parks system (encompassing stories from other parks) and the growing role they all have come to play in our nation's sense of itself, its past, and its future.

Thanks for the 1960s home movie Ken Burns - R. Roy -
The documentary is typical Ken Burns... interesting, but a little meandering at times.
The real shame of this version is the grainy video that is painfully apparent on a large HD display. Burns' panned still images are crystal clear showing every blemish and fold of the old photographs but his shots of the majestic scenery in the parks are marred by his poor choice of camera and film. I will say the soundtrack is fairly well done even if Peter Coyote (narrator) is a little dry.
Do not bother with the blu ray version, you will not get anything more than the standard DVD version with this series.

National Parks - Blu-ray - H. White -
The series on PBS was excellent, but when you watch it in blu-ray, it is really stunning. The best part is that there are no annoying floating ads flashing across the screen. This is definitely a good buy.

Spectacular National Parks - Kenneth M. Manning - Bethesda, Maryland USA
I am not into movies but, Ken Burns has made a documentary on a par with "Planet Earth". Scenery and history lesson are great. I would buy ANY Ken Burn flick but this blew my socks off!
