When you buy a Microsoft Zune, you can't just start syncing any type of movie onto it; the Zune movies have to be compatible with the device. If the movies are not compatible, chances are that you will end up getting frustrated and actually not use the video viewing features of the player at all. Of course, this would be such a waste of fine machinery. So before you think you know all that there is to know about syncing mobile devices such as mp3 players, first read the manual about what kind of data your Zune can handle.
Codecs
First thing to know about movies that can be played on your Zune is just what codecs the device can handle. A codec is something like a file type. The Zune can only handle 3 file types or codecs. These codecs include the following: MPEG4, MOV, and WMV. The first two codecs might already be familiar to you because they also work on Apple products. WMV, howver, is Windows Media specific and only devices that are built on the Windows platform can actually play these file types. But there are other codecs that you will stumble upon on the Internet. These include file types like AVI, ASF, DIVX, etc. These are all video codecs but this does not mean that they can work on the Zune. What you will need to do with files of those types is convert them to MPEG4, MOV, or WMV with special software that can be bought or even be downloaded for free.
Dimension
Another thing to remember is that even though you may have movie files that are in the right codec, you might have them in all the wrong dimensions. The Zune is only capable of playing movies that are converted to suit their screens dimension which is 240x320. What you need to do is download videos and movies with these dimensions. However, if you are converting DVDs into Zune movies then you will need to specify on the software that you are using that the visual dimensions are 240x320. Otherwise, one of two thing may happen. Firstly, the file may not run at all on the device. Secondly, it might run but you will only see a small portion of the screen and not the whole thing.
Size
Although the initial Zune was 30 gig large and now there is an 80 gig Zune, file size is still important. What you want to do is find movies that are already converted to the Zune format because they are small, quicker to download, and they will save you a lot of space on your device for other movies or music. A typical movie is about 700MB but if it's in Zune format, the size can easily be 300 to 400MB. That is a huge difference so the smaller the file is, the more space you have for more content. The best advice is to get content that is already converted for the Zune.
