Five Must Watch Movies Made Before 1980

They just don't make 'em like they used to.

How many people have heard this claim and wondered if it could possibly be true? For seemingly every cultural format--books, music, television, and especially films--a crusty, dark-browed curmudgeon lurks waiting to insist that the product of yesterday far outweighs what we read, listen to, and watch today. For most avid film fans, the curmudgeon's reaction is a tempting one. When movies like "Shrek 3: The Search for More Kids to Exploit" and "Pirates of the Caribbean 3: We Promise Johnny Depp Isn't Dead" top the box office charts, it's easy to retreat into a warm bath of nostalgia ... with extra Audrey Hepburn bubbles.

This sense of nostalgia shouldn't go unquestioned. "Breakfast at Tiffany's" may be a great film, but it's also marked by mind-boggling racism. "The Searchers" showcases a top-notch performance from John Wayne, but the film is about a guy who plans to shoot his own niece because she's been kidnapped by Native Americans ... then we're proud of him when he doesn't. Movies like "The Thing from Another World" made plenty of money fifty years ago, just like movies like "Big Momma's House" make money today. And today's best films still hit the mark every so often.

The irony of the curmudgeon's cry is that his insistence on a stark contrast between then and now actually drives many people away from the films of the past. (It's that and the total lack of movies about battle droids pre-1998.) Inexplicably, many of my friends simply avoid old movies as voraciously as Mike Meyers avoids movies that aren't sequels.

The advent of Netflix and its imitators, however, has changed the rules of the game. If you want to watch a "vintage classic" film but don't have the gumption to take action, here are five films you might want to consider adding to your queue. I've tried to avoid the obvious recommends, like "Casablanca" and "Gone with the Wind." But feel free to add those too. The five below, however, promise to give contemporary moviegoer copious as they delve into the past.

The Third Man (1949): If you've seen "Citizen Cane," you've probably heard of Orson Welles. He's that guy who supposedly made only one good movie and then threw his life away. "The Third man," however, provides an impressive if brief dose of young, un-thrown away Orson-Welles-ification. It takes place in Vienna in the aftermath of World War II and centers on the mysterious death of Harry Lime (Welles). Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton) resolves to find his friend's killer.

All about Eve (1950): If you are looking for a classic that doesn't star Humphrey Bogart, Kerry Grant, or James Dean, consider "All about Eve," a pure masterpiece starring Anne Baxter, Celeste Horn, and Bette Davis. Often cited as one of the film industry's truly great achievements, "All about Eve" centers on an aging stage actress who takes an overzealous fan under her wing.

The Hustler (1961): Paul Newman plays "Fast Eddie" Felson, a young pool shark who's convinced he's the best the game has ever seen. Jackie Gleason puts forward an unforgettable performance as pool legend Minnesota Fats, while Piper Laurie skillfully plays Newman's melancholy love interest. On sheer acting alone, this one is worth seeing. It also explains so many jokes from so many later movies. "Oh! They were making fun of 'The Hustler'!"

The Last Picture Show (1971): I'd heard about this movie for years before I put together the gumption to see it. Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, and Cybill Shepherd all deliver knock out portrayals of young but not quite innocent teens in a small Texas town in the 1950s. This film grabs hold of the viewer almost instantly and doesn't let go.

Read more about it here: http://imdb.com/title/tt0067328/plotsummary

Mean Streets (1973): In the aftermath of Martin Scorsese's "The Departed," it's easy to forget he made another movie about urban youngsters walking the line between right and wrong, set to the awesomeness of a song by the Rolling Stones. No, I'm not talking about "Goodfellas." Scorsese's first official directorial effort, "Mean Streets," stars Harvey Keitel as Charlie, a low ranking hood in Little Italy's local mob. Robert Deniro, before he was a cliché of himself, fills the supporting role of Johnny Boy, Charlie's erratic friend. Fans of "Pulp Fiction" will enjoy exploring a crucial work in the evolution of the gangster movie.

Review Slumdog Millionaire [Blu-ray]

Slumdog Millionaire [Blu-ray] Best Review

Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of Jamal, his brother Silam, and Latika. All three children are orphaned in an attack on the Mumbai slum in which they live. They join forces to lead an adventurous, poverty-stricken life. Jamal and Silam become separated from Lakita in the midst of a daring escape from a gangster. For years thereafter, Jamal searches for Lakita. He finds her years later, only to be separated from her again.

In desperation, Jamal manages to land a spot as a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?", hoping aginst hope that Latika will be watching so they can be reunited. In a twist of destiny, Jamal discovers that, due to the unique experiences growing up in the slums, he knows the answer to question after question.

Though there are definitely some very difficult parts of this movie to watch (especially at the beginning, when the primary characters are helpless children, prey to the unsavory environments that surround them), the film is ultimately uplifting. A marvel of casting, to boot, as a gifted actor portrays each of the princpal characters in different stages of life.

Sooooo worth seeing. I really loved it!

Slumdog Millionaire [Blu-ray] Specifications

Danny Boyle (Sunshine) directed this wildly energetic, Dickensian drama about the desultory life and times of an Indian boy whose bleak, formative experiences lead to an appearance on his country's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" Jamal (played as a young man by Dev Patel) and his brother are orphaned as children, raising themselves in various slums and crime-ridden neighorhoods and falling in, for a while, with a monstrous gang exploiting children as beggars and prostitutes. Driven by his love for Latika (Freida Pinto), Jamal, while a teen, later goes on a journey to rescue her from the gang's clutches, only to lose her again to another oppressive fate as the lover of a notorious gangster.

Running parallel with this dark yet irresistible adventure, told in flashback vignettes, is the almost inexplicable sight of Jamal winning every challenge on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?," a strong showing that leads to a vicious police interrogation. As Jamal explains how he knows the answer to every question on the show as the result of harsh events in his knockabout life, the chaos of his existence gains shape, perspective and soulfulness. The film's violence is offset by a mesmerizing exotica shot and edited with a great whoosh of vitality. Boyle successfully sells the story's most unlikely elements with nods to literary and cinematic conventions that touch an audience's heart more than its head. --Tom Keogh

Not quite out of the slums yet... - Andrew Ellington - Mulholland Drive
It seemed that about mid-year, 2008, the entire world (at least the cinematic world) caught a serious case of Slumdog Fever and soon the critics bodies and big prestigious awards bodies followed suit, handing over a near complete sweep of awards to a small yet bountiful film entitled `Slumdog Millionaire', a project that was probably on no ones radar and yet proved to be on everyone's minds. Looking back on the film (and recently revisiting it) I have to say that I'm still somewhat baffled by the rapturous applause this film received.

I said somewhat.

Personally, I have never seen a film that was so over-thought and yet simultaneous so under-thought as `Slumdog Millionaire'. For a film that prides itself in telling elaborate stories to add layers to a humble `slumdogs' apparent knowledge (a young boy actually wades through fecal mater for an autograph), this film all but seems to stop thinking completely in parts where it truly matters (like wrapping up a sloppy ending with a rather unlikely love story). The film had a nice concept, but the script is poorly realized and comes off unnecessary and actually quite choppy in the end.

Not for a lack of trying though.

There are many elements in play here, but the film doesn't know how to tie them all together cohesively. It is almost like the `gameshow' aspect of the film was an afterthought, something used to connect the dots when instead it actually serves as a distraction. Yes, I know that this is adapted from a novel; I'm just stating how the tone of the film came across to me, especially in the end, as the film is tying up lose ends.

I kind of have to applaud Danny Boyle here, and so I'll stop my critique to offer a slice of appreciation for the director behind this uneven offering. Boyle is a director that I really admire and respect. I have seen a number of his films, and what I love so much about him is that he is a director who will try anything and will adapt to any subject. He is hard to pigeonhole because his vision is not tied down to one specific theme. He has a masterful way of creating imagery that is honest and raw without losing a slice of humor that sets the tone of his films apart. As a directorial effort, I can see a lot of thought in `Slumdog Millionaire'. I don't think that his efforts were entirely successful (obviously) but I can see flourishes of greatness here. I'm so elated that he has an Oscar, but I'm saddened at the same time because it came for (arguably) his weakest work.

Where was Oscar in '03, when he delivered the brilliant '28 Days Later'? Where were they in '05 when he stunned with his touching yet original `Millions'? What about his shocking sophomore film in '96, `Trainspotting'?

Alas...

`Slumdog Millionaire' follows young Jamal as he nears the home stretch of India's version of `Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'. The film begins with an interrogation where he is being accused of cheating. The film then jumps back and forth between his moments on the show, his interrogation and his childhood as he explains to the cops how he knows all the answers. At times the films explanation of things can be pretty smart, other times they are fairly lazy. That is what I mean by uneven; over-thought and under-thought. The ending itself is shamefully under-thought. The entire `Jamal/Latika' love story is seriously under-thought. The character development feels like an afterthought. The development of Salim alone is disgusting. I have never really encountered a more vile character in recent cinema, and yet for some reason I'm not supposed to feel this way. The film offers no real development to persuade me in the desired direction. In fact, I can't decide if my smile at the films end had to do with what happened on the gameshow or in the bathtub.

The acting was decent, but nothing (and I mean NOTHING) to write home about. Dev Patel was bland beyond words, and Freida Pinto was barely used (but effective). The real standout here was Anil Kapoor, who evoked more emotional commitment than any actor in the film. The young actors were well used, especially Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, who played young Jamal.

I won't lie; I enjoyed this film, I was just disappointed. For a film with such promise, `Slumdog Millionaire' easily finds itself suffering from generic clichés that haunt many films. I expected more from Boyle. I expected a film with this much praise to rise above those stereotypes and formulate something fresh and original. The characters feel like skeletal variations (as in `lacking detail') of many other characters from many other movies. In then end, I was smiling but when the confetti cleared I was left pondering just how much better this movie really could have been.

And is it just me or was the ending credits nosedive into music video edited `You Got Served' territory totally fun yet tremendously cheap feeling?

Good film but not great or worth all the hype! - jesus4me - MD USA
After all this time, I finally decided to rent Slumdog Millionaire to see what the hype was all about. It got such rave reviews and awards at the Oscars I figured this had to be a fabulous film by far. To my surprise the film was rather violent and showed abuse and exploitation of children. I guess this was a touch of realism of the happenings in poor villages. Anyhow, the story is a bit depressinig and sad, however, the only uplifting part is Jamal's undying love for Letita whom he knew briefly as a little boy, got separated from, and despreately sought to find throughout the rest of the movie. The story has many holes in it and leaves you wondering what happened here and there. I thought the flashbacks to how Jamal came to know the answers to some of the questions on the game show was a pretty creative idea. I never understood why they thought he was cheating or how they could legally get away with torturing him for such an accusation. The most a game show would do if you cheated is to take back the winnings!! Not shock you with electrical currents and hang you from a wall!! That part made no sense. He was sitting in the hosts face the whole time...how could he cheat?? I just wish the love story was built up more since a good portion of the film showed Jamal searching for this girl. Also, I wish they would have shown what he did once he won all that money. Again, the film was good but I don't see what the massive hype was about. I've seen better films that got torn down by the Oscars. I have no idea what their criteria is!

Story, Story, Story - Mark Cunningham - Warren County, MO
This film is proof positive that a critically acclaimed, highly successful movie does not require big name stars, state of the art special effects, or grand scale death and mayhem. It simply needs a compelling story told in an entertaining way and Slumdog delivers. Slumdog speaks to the human condition; to love lost and won, to the triumph of good over evil, and to perservence rather than surrender. A great story that we can watch again and again and enjoy it more fully each time.

Scratched disk - Alexa Herrera -
Shipment was fast. However, the disk was scratched and the movie started skipping in 2 different parts when played. Tried to clean it but it still skipped...

Movie posters can angle by itself as a plan of art. They adorn contrarily arid walls of theaters and put activity into them. They acquaint a story, they allege something about the films they are promoting. As the song goes a account can acrylic a thousand words.

The cine posters are active to acquaint a movie. They came into actuality back the ancient accessible exhibitions of film. Halloween Costumes Meet Blockbuster Movies

Is it that life imitates art? Or that art imitates art? It seems that whichever is the case, licensed costumes for Halloween follow blockbuster movies. Like many toys, books and other consumer goods, Halloween costumes often style themselves after movie characters. Some manufacturers choose to carry licensed Halloween costumes; others choose to create "knockoffs" that closely resemble the licensed products, without paying the licensing fees... but they are not allowed to use the characters' names on their costumes.

For the past few years, Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC) costumes have been a huge success. With three big pirate movies, there have been six major characters to create: Captain Jack Sparrow costumes, Elizabeth Swann costumes, William Turner costumes, Hector Barbossa costumes, Davy Jones costumes, and Tia Dalma costumes. With everything from Elizabeth Swann's Aztec gold necklace to Jack Sparrow's rings and Barbossa's sword, pirate costumes offer many styles, sizes and choices for Halloween parties and contests.

In addition to licensed Pirates costumes, there are numerous unlicensed pirate costumes for women and men, and even kid's pirate costumes. These are likely to cost a little less that an official Jack Sparrow Halloween costume, but may be just as attractive and well-built.

Another perennial favorite: Spiderman costumes. Again, with three hit movies, the webslinger is available as adult Spiderman costumes, kids Spiderman costumes, and even a Spidergirl costume. "Spiderman costumes have been one of our best sellers for four years in a row," said James Burke, co-owner of SpookShop.com. "My sons both have Spiderman costumes, and wear them as pajamas, and even during the day. They have each gone through two sizes already."

Other hits such as The Simpsons movie are likely to bring more interest to Simpsons costumes. "We carry Simpsons masks and costumes, but expect manufacturers to add more Simpsons Halloween costumes to what they currently offer," Burke said.

Don't forget Harry Potter costumes. Unlike Spiderman and Pirates of the Caribbean costumes, Hogwarts Robes and accessories sell year-around. "Harry Potter scarves for the various houses have been a great seller," said Burke. "And we always have to reorder Harry Potter wands and glasses."

With other hit movies like Shrek the Third (with baby dronkey costumes), TVs "24" (with Jack Bauer costumes) and Barbie movies, Halloween costume stores are likely to again be full of licensed characters. Upcoming movies include Rob Zombie's remake of the classic movie "Halloween," which includes a new Michael Myers mask.

Look to the movies and TV to get great Halloween costume ideas. You'll have plenty to choose from!

The James Bond Movies

One of the best loved movie series of all time and popular with generation after generation of cinema goer are the James Bond movies and the release of Casino Royale last year has shown that the film series remains as popular as ever.

From Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, every actor to have stepped into the shoes of the world's most famous secret agent has his own dedicated followers, and while each actor's films maintain elements that we now associate with the Bond movies, the style of the films has changed radically on several occasions.

The early years

The first two Bond films starred Sean Connery, who remains the most popular actor as James Bond. Physically looking the part, he brought both toughness and a sense of humour to the role, something that the literary character had always lacked. Plot wise these films - Dr No and From Russia With Love - were little different to the books of Ian Fleming, but by the time of the third film, Goldfinger, the filmmakers decided to start introducing over the top gadgets, this time in the form of the Aston Martin DB5 with ejector seat.

After Goldfinger came Thunderball, and although it remained close to the book, it too had a whole host of gadgets, from underwater breathing equipment the size of a cigar tube to a hydrofoil that splits in two.

Fleming abandoned

After Thunderball came You Only Live Twice, but rather than base the script on the book, it was decided to write an original story using Fleming's characters and location. The film is over the top in every way, with more gadgets - including Little Nellie, the autogyro - a less plausible story and an over the top villain. The film was a success although it was also advertised Sean Connery's last outing as James Bond.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service came next, staring George Lazenby as Bond. It was his only time in the role and allegedly difficult to work with, but he decided to retire from the role before On Her Majesty's Secret Service had even been released on the advice of his agent! The film once again returns to Ian Fleming and is the last Bond film to stick rigidly to its literary original.

Comedy Bond

Sean Connery was persuaded to return to the role of James Bond in the following film, Diamonds Are Forever. However, Fleming was again abandoned in favour of an original story that started to see much more comedy, including a huge car chase in which half the Las Vegas police force seemed to be written off.

This comic trend continued with the introduction of Roger Moore as the films slid further away from the spirit of Ian Fleming and a raised eyebrow was all it took for the Bond girl to fall into bed with him.

Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me became less and less plausible, with sillier gadgets and more laughs, but after Moonraker the filmmakers decided they needed to plant Bond's feet back on the ground.

The result was For Your Eyes Only, probably the best of the Roger Moore Bond movies, playing a tougher, more ruthless 007 with less reliance on gadgets and comedy. Unfortunately this didn't last - Roger Moore's last two films, Octopussy and A View To A Kill, are perhaps the low point in the series.

The Dalton years

Timothy Dalton's debut as James Bond, The Living Daylights, saw a mixture of styles. On one hand the filmmakers wanted to return to the books, although by now all the novel's titles had been used; on the other they just couldn't leave the gadgets and comedy out of the film.

The result was a film that was head and shoulders above most of Roger Moore's films, but would have been be even better if the moments of stupidy had been left out. One scene that springs to mind is when Bond fires two missiles from his Aston Martin to destroy a truck in his path followed by a scene when the car enters a wooden shed, which he then drives about on a frozen lake. How Ian Fleming would have turned in his grave.

Dalton's second and final film was License To Kill. Bond fans tend to be polarised into loving or hating it, and although the title is original some of the scenes were taken from the book Live And Let Die. Bond was hard, dark, unsmiling... and boring. Dalton's contract was for three movies, but the series was put on hold while the producers went to court over a rival Bond series and when they were ready to film again Timothy Dalton decided not to continue.

The shadow of Roger Moore

Pierce Brosnan's Bond was introduced in Goldeneye, which abandoned the dark side of Bond for what some people have dubbed "Roger Moore-lite". With gadgets and humour, the films are a long way from Ian Fleming although it should be noted that his third film, The World Is Not Enough does include some elements from the books. Tomorrow Never Dies, the second film, is instantly forgettable and Die Another Die, while reasonable good in the first half, has too much science fiction, including an invisible car.

A return to Fleming

After Die Another Day the producers saw that the series needed a shot in the arm and looked to move the next film in a different direction. One of the results of the court action was that they had the rights to make Casino Royale, the original James Bond book to which Ian Fleming had sold the film right independently to the other titles. Deciding to reboot Bond they released that they'd need a younger actor, eventually picking Daniel Craig for the part.

Although Daniel Craig attracted much criticism when filming began, he confounded all but his harshest critics and turned the film into a huge box office success. Bringing a physicality that had been missing since Sean Connery hung up his shoulder holster, Casino Royale drops most of the gadgets and all but the subtlest of humour; the film effectively brings Bond back to his roots and while the story has been expanded from the book, there is much that is faithful to Ian Fleming.

Brosnan's films saw the pre-title sequences (PTS) getting longer and longer - around 20 minutes in Die Another Day - which are just too long, especially compared with what many consider to be the classic PTS in Goldfinger - but in Casino Royale it seems much too short, leaving you wanting more.

From Dr No to Casino Royale, the James Bond series has been phenomenally successful and despite changing with the times and to suit the actors, it appears to have turned full circle. With Bond 22 currently in the planning stages we can only wait and see what the next instalment in the saga holds for us.

It is not absolutely a feel-good movie, but it does attending at the challenges women face through their lives with an unexpected, anticipation afflictive ending.

The Notebook

This is a admirable and acutely affective adventure of constant love. It tells the adventure of a adolescent man and women whose affair is brought to a arrest if they are afar by war. The two are reunited after in activity and are accustomed a additional chance. The abundant affair about this cine is that it is told searching aback from the angle of the now earlier man account to a changeable friend. The cine appearance Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Gena Rowlands and James Garner whose adulation with anniversary stands the analysis of time.

These are my claimed favorites as best acquaintance movies. They are absolute to be aggregate with a best friend. There are others already you accept watched these bisected a dozen times. Don't absence The Bucket List, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Forest Gump, Steel Magnolias, Fried Green Tomatoes and Grumpy Old Men.

Cartoons - Animated Movies

When most people think of cartoons, most likely they think of the short ten minute skits you're used to seeing on your Saturday morning kids shows like Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear, Mighty Mouse and a host of others that so many of us have grown up with. But the truth is, cartoons have been just as big and popular on the big screen in full length motion pictures for just as long.

Probably the person most responsible for the big screen success of animated movies was Walt Disney who began in the 1920s by creating such memorable characters as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. One of his first full feature length films was "Steamboat Willie" which starred Mickey Mouse. Disney went on to produce such memorable films as "Cinderella", "Snow White" "Peter Pan" and the half animated half real person masterpiece "Mary Poppins", which was unique for the times.

However, Disney studios wasn't the only production company to make full feature length animated movies, though they are probably the biggest even to this day. Other companies have joined in on what has become an incredibly huge market for children's animated films. Many of these companies and producers took animation to a new level. Cartoons were no longer the drawn figures that we were used to seeing for the first 50 years of their existence. New forms of animation began to take off with the advances in computer technology.

The most popular of these new forms is what is known as Pixar 3D technology. Pixar, the company, is actually a subsidiary of Disney. The process uses Pixar's animation software to create the cartoon images. The actual steps involved are quite complex, from the initial drawing of the characters, the layout of each scene, the actual movement of the characters through the scene and finally transporting all of this through the software itself. All this information is then stored in huge data files. These files can then be manipulated in a variety of different ways. Human motion itself has never been so easy to imitate, which is what makes these animated movies so realistic. Some of the most popular of these over the years have been "Toy Story", "Shrek", and "Monsters Inc.", just to name a few.

Another type of animation, which has become very popular of late, is the painstaking stop motion animation. This is done by placing actual figures in place on the set and snapping a picture of them. The figures are then moved, sometimes just a fraction of an inch at a time to work their way to the next action in the scene. These are probably the most difficult animated movies to make and require the patience of a saint. Fortunately, Nick Park has that kind of patience. He has created what is arguably the most popular stop motion animated movies ever made, the Wallace and Gromit series, the most famous of these is probably "The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit".

Animated movies, today, are big box office and even winners at the Oscars. Just recently, Shrek became the biggest box office smash for an animated movie ever.

As long as there are kids, both young and old, there will always be a market for big budget animated films. And they just keep getting bigger and better.

Video Games Turned Movies

If you ever see the name "Alan Smithee" in the credits of a movie, it means the real director thought the movie was so bad, they didn't want their name in it.

Gamers know that a lot of video games are based off of movies, such as Fantastic 4, Chronicles of Riddick, Batman, Superman--the list can go on and on. But what about movies based off of video games? How did they do? Below is a list of games turned into movies over the past ten years, how they did and a prediction of game-to-movie projects in the future. The first of these was Super Mario Brothers. Made back in 1993, it is a weak interpretation of the game in which Dennis Hopper plays King Koopa, an evolved dinosaur. There was not much of a plot line and the movie was an agonizing 140 minutes long. The audiences felt the same way too as the movie bombed in the box office. This however didn't stop Hollywood from producing many more video game-to-movie adaptations such as: Final Fantasy The Spirits Within, the Mortal Kombat series, the Tomb Raider series and the most recent Doom. In 1995 the Mortal Kombat series was next to hit the big screen. Based much more on the fan based games it still had no real plot and seemed more like an old fashion kung fu movie then a big budget movie.

Next came Tomb Raider in 2001, based on the game back in 1996. This movie was a very good interpretation of the game, which included exploration, treasure, monsters and, most importantly, Lara Croft, played by Agelina Jolie. Jolie looked the part of Lara Croft as well as any human could, hence a huge reason the movie did well is that it had a watchable character and a good story line. Because of these aspects, the Tomb Raider movies set a new trend for future video game-to-movies.

Final Fantasy The Spirits Within, made in 2001, was not really based upon the games but more the philosophies behind the games, namely parallel universes and the existence of spirits. However the reason the movie lost $120 million dollars was not the plot but the GC animation. True, the character mapping and texture shading was revolutionary for its time in the film industry, but because of the use of CG it failed to induce emotion with the characters' eyes and faces, which in turn equated to bad acting and a flop in the box office.

Resident Evil, in 2002, tried a different approach in its adaptation in which it tried to have many different subplots to capture the viewer's attention. Did it work? No. The problem here was that Resident Evil turned into more of an action movie then a horror/thriller like the games where. The movie itself was really not that scary, had only zombies, mutant dogs and the Licker (the only real monster in the movie) so it is needless to say how this movie did in the box office.

Then there was Doom. Not the 1st of 1st person shooters, but it was the baddest. The Doom series has been scenario time and time again. You are a space marine on mars with a mission to close Hell's portal along with a massive arsenal of weapons like the rocket launcher and chainsaw. One would think the producers could generate a decent script from the material in the video games, but I guess the producers must have been out to lunch because there was no reference to Hell in the movie. Instead it was DNA experiments gone wrong on Mars. Instead of killing demons, the marines killed zombies. Civilians by the hundreds were killed, whereas in the video game only monsters were killed. Another flop we will have to wait and see.

In Silent Hill a key scene is when the heroine is told to memorize a map and the directions are simply left, left, right, right in nature to navigation through a maze within the movie. What make the video game so popular was the ability for the player to make his or her own choices within the game, whereas in the movie there is only one choice when diminishes the games flare.

The Tomb Raider movies in this writer's option were the only movies that really delivered decent acting and plot line and hence did well in the box office. Does this mean that all video game-to-movies are going to be horrible? No. In fact news has it that Peter Jackson is planning on changing that by doing a movie of the Halo series, we will see if he lives up to his promise.

Celine Dion: Live in Las Vegas - A New Day [Blu-ray] Specifications

If you were one of the handful of folks who missed Céline Dion's mega-run in Las Vegas, fear not: Céline Dion: A New Day is a riveting, sumptuous front-row seat to the whole extravagant experience. As concert DVDs go, this is a show of a lifetime, nearly six hours featuring not only no-expenses-spared production values and every song from Dion's famed show, but priceless extras as well. Dion's substantial voice is in fine form, and sparkles on signature tunes like "A New Day Has Come," "The Power of Love," and of course the theme from Titanic, "My Heart Will Go On" (and Dion-watchers will note that she's thankfully dialed back the breast-beating that used to accompany this song).

But as impressive as the performances are--and they include the talented gymnasts, dancers, and backup singers who work as a Cirque du Soleil-style ensemble--the set's most memorable moments are found in the personal footage and extras. Dion comes across as truly humble and approachable, with a wicked sense of humor and real compassion for her hard-working staff and her fans. There are sweet, intimate moments of Dion with her husband and son, as well as telling scenes that show her true resourcefulness (girlfriend does her own makeup!). The many docs include one on the building of her special theater and the building of the show from the ground up. "If you're going to gamble," says Dion's manager and husband, René Angélil, "Vegas is the place to do it." Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. --A.T. Hurley

Watch Movies Online - How to Watch New Movies Online

Are you looking for a place to watch movies online? The thing with watching movies on the internet is that you either find clips and parts that cut out in the middle or the movies you do find are terrible quality and are almost unwatchable. So are there places where you catch all the latest movies in high quality with no breaks? Yes - there is!

When searching for a place to watch movies online you should always avoid the torrent sites. These sites are unregulated, meaning the movies you download can contain spy ware and viruses that sometimes even your anti-virus software cant detect. You should also avoid searching on You Tube and other video sharing sites. You will very rarely find full movies on them and what you do find will be poor quality.

For about the price of one DVD you can join a paid movie download site. In my opinion this is well worth the money. You only pay once and get access to all the movies you want, in high DVD quality for life. You can even burn off the movies you download to DVD to watch on your TV. But there are a lot of these sites out there. How do you choose the right one? Firstly, you can make sure the service you choose has a few things.

1. A Money Back Guarantee - This is a sure fire way to check the service isn't a scam. The best services I've seen have an eight week, no questions asked money back guarantee.

2. Customer Support - If your paying to join a site, make sure they have customer support. The best sites out there have 24/7 support for all there members.

3. A Great Selection of Media - you want to get the most out of your money - the better sites don't just have movies but have TV shows and music.

So, make sure the site you choose has all these things and you will find a great service to download all your movies from for life. For a review of my favourite movie download service go to http://www.squidoo.com/watch-free-movies-on-the-internet

Review Same Time, Next Year

Same Time, Next Year Best Review

When this movie came out, I loved it! In fact, I listened to the music from Johnny Mathis ("The Last Time I Felt Like This") over and over.

In this movie, the premise seems trite. A couple meets, spends a weekend together, and that's it. But it isn't, and this particular couple, played by Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, decides to meet again the "same time next year." And then, over the next couple of decades, we see the two of them connect again and again. We watch them as they grow and change--sometimes she grows more than he, and sometimes vice versa.

We're kind of rooting for them to get together, but we also know, on some level, that if this relationship were to become permanent, it would change...irrevocably.

I love the pairing of these two actors, and the theme music from Johnny Mathis evokes so many emotions in me...from that time. It transports me back to what was happening in my own life.

A memorable movie that touches on emotions and reminds us that it's the moments in life that are most memorable.

Bernard Slade's smart, funny, and touching play about an adulterous couple who meet one weekend a year for 26 years is nicely adapted for the screen by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) in this 1978 film. The two-person story stars Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, both of whom are outstanding at conveying a rainbow of emotions over a quarter-century as life gives and takes away, and the world convulses with change. Mulligan brings taste and honesty to the film, and Alda and Burstyn give full, living performances. --Tom Keogh

Same Time Next Year - Meeker - Syracuse, NY
I enjoyed watching this movie once I received it. It was very relaxing along with being funny as well as sad at times.
However I ordered this movie from Amazon.com on 3/13/10 and didn't receive it within a week. I thought that was entirely too long to wait for the DVD. As a result, a friend of mine who was going to be visiting that week came and went and neither of us got to see this film while she was here--very disappointing.

I loved this movie. I guess that I have seen it at least 10 times! - Ring Mama - Texas, USA
I have laughed so much, that each time I see this movie I find something else to laugh about. Alan Alda and Ellen Burystn are so perfect for these roles, I cannot image anyone else in those parts. All the little things that made the movie, his watch that was an hour and 25 minutes ahead and that she was supposed to be at a retreat. When she went into labor and he had labor pains also, it just goes on and on. Just a wonderfully funny movie that I never tire of watching. I recommend it to all my friends.

One of my favorite movies ever! - Marie E. Larry - Geneva, FL USA
When I realized that many of my lady friends had never seen this movie, I bought it from Amazon.com and had a "girls' afternoon out", with a bottomless pitcher of Sangria and loads of popcorn. We are all still talking about what fun that afternoon was, and we vowed to do it again with another classic movie. I just love that I can go online to Amazon and usually find exactly what I want, and it's affordable. Thanks!

Prompt, pleasant, professional - A 5 star seller ! Thanks ! - Bear's Mom - NWCT

Review Bigger, Stronger, Faster*

Bigger, Stronger, Faster* Best Review

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen and very well balanced. Does a lot to bust the myths surrounding anabolic steroid use. Most highly recommended for anyone wanting to get the truth related to these controversial substances.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster* Feature

  • In America, we define ourselves in the superlative: we are the biggest, strongest, fastest country in the world. We reward speed, size and above all else: winning at sport, at business and at war. Metaphorically we are a nation on steroids. Is it any wonder that so many of our heroes are on performance enhancing drugs? From the producers of Bowling For Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 comes a new film

Bigger, Stronger, Faster* Overview

When you discover that your heroes have all broken the rules, do you follow the rules, or do you follow your heroes? From the producers of Bowling For Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 comes a powerful new documentary that unflinchingly explores steroid use in the biggest, strongest, fastest country in the world: America.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster* Specifications

Pop culture junkies tend to think of Hulk Hogan, Sylvester Stallone, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as entertainment figures. In Poughkeepsie, NY, back in the 1980s, filmmaker Christopher Bell and his brothers viewed them as heroes and became bodybuilders. Like the Hulkster, Mike and Mark Bell even turned to professional wrestling. Chris, a former staffer at Venice's famous Gold's Gym, doesn't use anabolic steroids--he did try them once--but his heroes have and his brothers do, leading him to look deeper at this increasingly common practice. While Bell explores the health costs of juicing, he's mostly concerned with the moral consequences involved in the use of performance-enhancing substances. Though he refrains from judgment, he stopped taking steroids because it felt dishonest. Naturally, his burly brothers feel otherwise. Aside from his family, Bell speaks with doctors, lawyers, congressmen, gym rats, and professional athletes, like Olympic sprinters Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis and Tour de France cyclist Floyd Landis. He also includes footage of José Canseco, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire testifying during the federal grand jury and congressional hearings on steroid use in the major leagues (prompted by the publication of Canseco's Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big). For the most part, Bell doesn't leave any stone unturned and the personal nature of his entertaining and enlightening inquiry elevates Bigger, Stronger, Faster, i.e. The Side Effects of Being American, above your average exposé. Recommended to athletes, sports fans, health nuts, and of course, pop culture junkies. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Advertisement for steroids - M Discover - USA
Advertisement for steroids

With the premise of trying to appear objective, this film is highly biased in favor of taking steroids. As others have already commented, self esteem issues and ego factors play a major role here. The logic is more or less, if you can't beat them, join them. Unfortunately, this type of mentality is growing in our society. This type of thinking is like justifying cheating on a test we do not have the skill or ability to pass to get the reward regardless of the consequences (beyond the physical) which is not even mentioned or probably even considered. Maybe instead of cheating, we should accept and realize our physical limitations or maybe work even harder on our true skills.
Partial facts and information is shown, most in favor of using steroids instead of providing all of the information, research and facts about the topic. Any reputable professional in the fields of nutrition or medicine is not going to condone taking steroids. Any that do, either have a bias in favor of steroids or have what they say taken out of context or segments cherry picked to make them sound as if they are saying something else (we should be all to familiar to this from news media).

Not an objective look at the topic and riddled with fuzzy logic.

Justifying taking steroids to compete or look good because everyone is doing it, reveals personal weakness and an utter lack of integrity.

My review - Daryl Martin - USA
This DVD has shown me the reality of bodybuilding and the myths behind steroids that are just not true. I think this video was very informative, and a must see for all who workout and want a better looking body.

THIS IS A PITTIFUL DOCUMENTARY! - MeadowLark - Grand Lake, Colorado
This is a troubling piece. It follows the depressing, dysfunctional, suicidal lives of Mr. Bell and his family who are all suffering greatly from obesity and severe inferiority complexes. It attempts (and fails) to justify their turning to steroids in an effort to cover up their own feelings of inadequacy in life.
Perhaps the most troubling facet of the documentary is the fact that Mr. Bell concludes that the reason people use steroids and cheat to win, is because that is the American way. Anyone who goes along with that premise is blind to the fact that most Americans are fair and have integrity and would rather lose than win by cheating.
Bell, in keeping with his own admission to lying and cheating, takes a few cheap, below-the-belt political swipes at President George W. Bush by accusing him, without presenting the slightest bit of evidence, of condoning the use of steroids before he was elected President of the United States for two consecutive terms by the American people.
We feel that this documentary focuses in on a very few freak-show celebrity types and presents them as American heroes, which, of course, they are not. Most Americans would not characterize them as heroes either. Upon the premise that these are heroes the entire documentary is built, and upon this premise the justification of the use of steroids to cheat is founded. It simply DOESN'T WORK!!!
"Bigger, Stronger, Faster" (Should have been named "Bigger, Stranger, Fatter") lacks balance and represents, we believe, the lowest form of journalism, the typical propagandaesque type of work previously produced by the same people in other works of questionable value. Its a hard sell, replete with rationalizations and faulty logic, for something dispicable and disgusting.
