Comic books have been published in America for nearly 100 years, but they didn't hit their stride until the 1940s when characters like Superman and Batman were introduced. Now, over 60 years later, comic book movies have become staples of the summer movie season. This year saw the release of "Spider-Man 3," "Fantastic Four 2" and "Ghost Rider, "(all based on Marvel comic book characters). Plus, the surprise hit of 2007, the Spartan epic, "300," was based on Frank Miller's acclaimed 1998 comic book series. These four movies alone have made over $700 million for the bean counters in Hollywood. Not bad for characters that appear in $3 comic books each month.

2008 may be the best year so far for comic book movies, with Will Eisner's (the father of the American graphic novel) "The Spirit" due in January, "Watchmen," directed by 300's Zack Snyder due in March, Robert Downey Jr. as "Iron Man," Ed Norton as "The Incredible Hulk" and Christian Bale back as Batman facing off against Heath Ledger as The Joker in "The Dark Knight."

Why have comic book movies become so big in the last decade? "Two reasons," says Marc Bowker, owner of Alter Ego Comics, a comic book store in Lima, OH. "First, special effects technology has finally caught up with the imaginations of comic book artists." The Spider-Man films are a perfect example of movies that could not have been done well without the advances in effects technology. (Want proof? Most of the best films of the last 10 years have been based on existing material - novels, comic books, musicals, etc. Many comic book characters have 25-50 years worth of stories to choose from that would make excellent films.

Movie studios have taken over the biggest comic book convention in the world, The San Diego Comic Con, where they buy up the rights to comic book characters, big and small. The studios also use San Diego to make major casting announcements for comic-related movies and start building buzz around those films. At the 2007 San Diego Comic Con held in July, Zack Snyder was officially announced as the director of "Watchmen," and key cast members were revealed. Warner Bros. also held a scavenger hunt to promote the 2008 release of the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

The relationship between Hollywood and comic books shows no signs of ending anytime soon. There are dozens of movies based on comic books in active development, including non-super hero comics like Vertigo's "Y: The Last Man," and this fall's "30 Day's of Night." As long as the comic book industry keeps creating memorable characters with great stories, Hollywood will be waiting to bring those stories to the big screen.

First off I would like to say that this movie is really worth it on Blu Ray. It's very cheap relative to other Blu Rays... And it looks amazing. There are lots of awesome wide shots, as this takes place in Australia. It's a really grimy movie, and it shows alllll the little details on everybody. There's a lot to see in hi-def.

Also, this movie is just straight up really awesome. It's not too long, and the story progresses in an exciting fashion. Guy Pearce is awesome! Big props for Ray Winstone's character too.

"Ya got me brother." Blu ray review. - A. Scultore - NY
The Proposition: Save your younger brother by killing your older! This is what Charlie Burns (Pearce) must do in order to bring an end to his older brother's brutal cycle of violence. Set in Australia in the 1880s, this is a gritty "western" that will make you gringe. It has been hailed as the next great western, but don't be fooled. It is a good movie that has great acting with a simple an effective plot. Don't confuse this as the next "Unforgiven". Worth a watch.

BLU RAY THOUGHTS: Excellent picture but the audio was inconsistant. Nice special features. FINAL VERDICT: UPGRADE IF YOU ARE A HUGE FAN OF THIS MOVIE.

Ok, I am a fan of Horror and somewhat, Westerns. This is neither. This is a psychological Western in the sense that it deals with your mind. My favorite Westerns were "High Plains Drifter" and "Pale Rider" but this is not Fantasy! But this movie is Cerebral, the noises, images truly react to the mind. Also, the story is the best part. I would recommend this movie to ANY buyer.

Famous Movies Turned Down by Actors and Directors

The movie industry is a fickle business and scripts are often touted around a number of people before a director and cast attach themselves. Over the years a number of classic and beloved movies have been made by second or even third choice directors and actors. We can only wonder how these films would have turned out had they been made by the studio's first choice.

Dustin Hoffman was the first choice to play Deckard in Bladerunner and apparently a host of other actors were considered before Harrison Ford got the part. According to writer Philip K. Dick Martin Scorcese was interested in directing but never optioned the novel.

Kubrick considered both Robert De Niro and Robin Williams to play the part of Jack in The Shining before settling on Jack Nicholson. Stephen King, author of the book on which the film is based, wanted Michael Moriarty or Jon Voight for the role.

Alien was going to be directed by Walter Hill but after helping re-write the script the production was delayed and he pulled out to make way for Ridley Scott.

The central role of Andy in the hugely popular film The Shawshank Redemption was turned down by Tom Hanks and Kevin Costner before it was offered to Tim Robbins. Rob Reiner also tried to buy the rights from Frank Darabont intending to direct it himself and he planned to cast Tom Cruise in the lead role.

The Godfather was offered to Italian director Sergio Leone who turned it down and Coppola was reportedly close to being replaced a number of times as his relationship with Paramount turned sour. The studio also wanted someone other than Brando for the role of Vito Corleone and apparently Ernest Borgnine and Orson Welles were considered but Coppola insisted on Brando. Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman all turned down the role of Michael Corleone and Martin Sheen also auditioned for the part before Coppola settled on the then relatively unknown Al Pacino.

Al Pacino has turned down a number of fantastic parts in his career including the role of Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas which went to Robert De Niro, he also turned down the part of Han Solo in Star Wars and Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now. The part of Willard was first turned down by Steve McQueen and shooting started with Harvey Keitel in the role before Coppola replaced him two weeks into production with Martin Sheen.

When making Pulp Fiction Tarantino wanted Michael Madsen to play the role of Vincent Vega but he turned it down to do the Kevin Costner film Wyatt Earp. Daniel Day-Lewis also reportedly wanted the part but Tarantino rejected him in favour of John Travolta.

Tom Selleck was actually cast in the role of Indiana Jones for Raiders of the Lost Ark but pulled out to continue making Magnum P.I. Apparently George Lucas resisted casting Harrison Ford in the part keen to avoid him becoming "that guy I put in all my movies", luckily Spielberg eventually persuaded him Ford was perfect for the role.

Will Smith and Nicolas Cage both turned down the part of Neo in The Matrix and it eventually went to Keanu Reeves. Sean Connery turned down the part of Morpheus which eventually went to Laurence Fishburne. Connery also turned down the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and he only got the part of James Bond in Dr. No after Cary Grant decided he was too old for the part and refused it.

Terry Gilliam turned down the chance to direct American Beauty and unbelievably Chevy Chase turned down the role that won Kevin Spacey an Oscar.

Mel Gibson turned down the role of Maximus in Gladiator, the part which won Russell Crowe an Oscar. Gibson also declined Costner's part in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and he only ended up directing Braveheart after Terry Gilliam turned it down. Gilliam also rejected the chance to direct Forrest Gump and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Jack Lemmon turned down the role of Butch in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Newman switched roles from Sundance to Butch when Steve McQueen was cast as Sundance. The part eventually went to Robert Redford.

Sidney Lumet was going to direct Scarface but backed out and Brian De Palma quit directing Flashdance so that he could take over.

When James Cameron was casting for The Terminator he considered O.J. Simpson and then Lance Henriksen for the role of the robotic killer and Schwarzenegger was originally offered the role of Kyle Reese, thankfully he eventually came to his senses and cast Schwarzenegger as the Terminator and Michael Biehn as Reese.

The actors then were also playback singers and this worked as an advantage to the films popularity. Press conferences and film launches were comparatively a straightforward affair and award ceremonies were laudable for their simplicity. Once you have entered and submitted the information a new page appears. Click the "search for file" button"and navigate to the file you want to upload. Then click the "upload" button. Indie Movies are basically different from a common blockbuster movie, such as The Dark Knight or Transformers from various aspects as it is produced in much more smaller scale in terms of money, production and casting.

When I saw the previews I knew there was something great about this movie. Ninja Assassin takes the best of the ninja action from anime classics, such as Ninja Scroll, and brings them to life. What makes this movie better than most is not the hand to hand fighting, but the weapons and intense training employed by ninjas. Normally where in most movies with ninjas you would see a couple of shurikens thrown here and there, NOT HERE, that is where the fun comes in. It's feasible dozens are thrown over time like a storm and they come out of nowhere, it seems. There are a lot of things that set this movie apart from many others and it is definitely worth seeing.

This movie is an all time favorite of mine and I have seen it a countless number of times. The movie was actually filmed in Natchitoches, Louisiana, which is very close to where I live so I have visited the town, which is truly beautiful. I just want to state that I am some what bothered by some of the comments in other reviews stating that they wish the movie was more of this or more of that. This screenplay was written by Robert Harling about the life and horrible death of his sister Susan, who Julia Roberts character mirrors. This is a TRUE STORY based on Susan's REAL life & REAL death (in 1985) after the birth of her young son Jack Jr. The movie is what it is because Robert wrote it after locking himself in his room for 10 days after Susan's devastating death. Please feel free to research and you will find the truth, which is that this is not just some made up story but instead a story of the journey traveled by a real family from Natchitoches, La. That is also why the movie was filmed entirely in that lovely town. Robert Harling plays the preacher throughout the film, who marries Shelby & Jackson, who is at the cemetary & the Easter egg hunt on the river. He & his Mother were on site throughout ALL of the filming to make certain that it stayed true to the truth of their real life story. True fans should buy the "Steel Magnolias Scrapbook - Memories of Movie making in a small town" if you love the movie. It is a great book full of wonderful information.

Ten Great Vampire Movies

I'm a big fan of horror movies, and especially of a good vampire movie. While there are tons of cheap crap vampire movies out there, there are is also a wide array of great movies that, best of all, vary in style from one film to another. The trouble with making a top ten list for vampire movies is that some people like comedies, others like the strange surreal films, while others want blood and guts and the scariest movie they can find.

So my top ten movie list is focusing on ten great, diverse vampire movies. This list is the top ten for variety in this genre. This list will show you the wide variety of options directors have when using vampires as the subject of their films.

Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Gravens (1922)

This is the grandfather of all vampire movies, a movie that never should have been made. This film is a black and white silent picture that stars Max Schrek as the creepy Count Orlock. This film was an expressionist film that remains extremely popular today, but because of a weird way: half the people who still watch this film find Nosferatu extremely creepy and scary, while the other half find it campy and hilarious.

This is one of the earliest vampire films, and after it's release, Bram Stoker's widow sued the director, saying this was a blatant rip off of her late husband's novel: Dracula. The court found in her favor, and every negative of this film was supposed to have been destroyed, but pirate copies kept cropping up all over the place. Once the copyright to Dracula wore off (copyrights last 70 years after the author's death), the movie was re-released in DVD format and is now available on DVD. Whether this movie hits you as very creepy or hilarious, it's worth seeing.

John Carpenter's Vampires (1998)

John Carpenter's Vampires is one of the better recent vampire movies that actually takes the effort to be a vampire movie, and not an action film disguised as a vampire movie. James Woods plays the role of the main protagonist, a vampire hunter who is obsessed with wiping the mall out with his team after he witnessed his parents murdered by the blood sucking undead when he as a child.

He discovers that a group of vampires are searching for a powerful doom for mankind. The Vatican then secretly enlists a team of vampire-hunters, led by Jack Crow, to hunt down and destroy all of them before they find a crucifix that would give them the power to walk in the day.

After destroying a nest of the evil monsters, Valek, the vampire master, comes after Jack and his team, leading to a fast paced action based movie that still focuses mostly on vampires against the human undead hunter. A great action paced film that is mostly action based, but definitely has its moments of out right terror.

Lost Boys (1987)

This is a favorite among many vampire movie fans, and will almost always pop up on a top ten list of vampire films. This Joel Schumacher film is also pop culture famous because it featured the two Coreys at the height of their teenage heart throb popularity in the late eighties.

Don't let this scare you away, this is a good movie, and it is a very traditional story in a modern setting, mixing the two well without bastardizing either. A single mother and her two sons move to a small coastal California town. There are some mysterious deaths, as well as a pesky motorcycle gang. The younger brother makes friends with imaginative boys who claim to be vampire hunters. The older brother falls for a beautiful girl and then begins acting stranger and stranger while exhibiting all the classic signs of vampirism.

Wanting to save his brother, the younger one joins his friends to search for the head vampire and to destroy it in order to return his brother to normal. An excellent modern vampire movie that is sure to delight all fans of the genre.

Interview with a Vampire (1994)

Interview with a Vampire is based on the best selling novel by Anne Rice. This novel, and the movie that follows it rather closely. This is what you would consider the "high end" or "high art" type of vampire movie. Literary, and based on story and theme rather than general genre considerations.

Interview with a Vampire is about a plantation owner named Louis who lost his brother and his will to live, but Lestat likes the man and offers him the chance to become a vampire. Louis accepts, but finds that he hates being a vampire and he refuses to take human life. The two of them end up turning a little girl into one of them, and she becomes the reason for Louis to continue to live, as the two live together as family through the centuries that follow the 1700s.

The interview comes as a young journalist finds a man who tells him he is a vampire who is over 200 years old, and he tells his story. The movie is like the novel, following the philosophy and reflections of this vampire who refuses to take human life. This is a very different, change of pace film that will find its fans, and was critically acclaimed for good reason.

Dracula (1958)

The 1958 version of the film Dracula was ground breaking in many ways, and is the first of eight movies in the "Hammer" series. Christopher Lee plays Dracula in nearly all of these films, and the "Hammer Series" of Dracula films remain classics among vampire fans. In this first film, the protagonist, Jonathan Harker, attacks Dracula at his castle (apparently somewhere in Germany). He fails, and Dracula travels to a nearby city, where he preys on the family of Harker's fiancée. The only one who may be able to protect them is Dr. Van Helsing, Harker's friend and fellow vampire hunter.

This movie was directed by Terence Fisher, and it is a British film that was released n the United States as "Horror of Dracula." While fairly tame by today's standard, this film was ground breaking for its combination of romance/sexuality, and what was an unprecedented amount of gore.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

This film reintroduced Dracula to a modern Hollywood audience, and is one of the first vampire films to have a huge Hollywood budget. With an amazing cast of actors and a great director (Francis Ford Coppola), this film won a large number of awards, especially for technical achievements. This is a visually stunning movie, and even Keanu Reeves' iffy acting can't bring down the overall film.

This version of Dracula is closely based (for a Hollywood film) on Bram Stoker's classic novel of the same name. A young lawyer (Jonathan Harker) is assigned to a gloomy village in the mists of Eastern Europe. He is captured and imprisoned by the undead vampire Dracula, who travels to London, inspired by a photograph of Harker's betrothed, Mina Murray. In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life from Mina's closest friend, Lucy Westenra. Lucy's friends gather together to try to drive Dracula away, and a final confrontation is inevitable.

This was the ninth highest grossing film worldwide in 1992, making over $215 million dollars, and it was not just a U.S. success, but worldwide. This is one of the best vampire movies ever made,

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

Robert Rodriguez directs this vampire movie, which was co-written by Quentin Tarantino. This is celebrating one of the best "pulp" vampire movies, complete with sexy half naked women undead, a modern situation, a "nest" and a mass feeding, with the innocent heroine who you know will somehow make it through, but only after kicking vampire butt!

Seth Gecko and his brother Richard are in hiding after a bloody bank robbery in Texas. They escape across the border into Mexico and will be home-free the next morning, when they pay off the local kingpin. They just have to survive 'from dusk till dawn' at the rendezvous point, which turns out to be a strip joint that, unbeknownst to them, is also an active vampire nest.

The Gecko brothers are fugitives, and are on the run after a very interesting bank robbery. They kidnap the Fuller family, and drive to a Mexican bar to meet with other on-the-run criminals. The two fugitive brothers at gunpoint get an ex-minister and his two children to take them across the border into Mexico. They drive to a Mexican biker bar to meet with the other crooks, but the vampires go nuts, and the survivors must fight their way out to morning. This is the epitome of a pulp vampire film.

Blade (1998)

Blade is the first transition of a comic/graphic novel into an action based series. This is as much an action film as a vampire film, and shows where the next evolution of the modern vampire film may be going, as the later film Underworld proves that the trend is likely to continue.

The movie begins with a pregnant woman being admitted to a hospital, bleeding from the neck. Paramedics think she was attacked by some type of animal. Doctors perform an emergency C-Section, and her baby (a boy) is born alive just as she dies. This is the birth of Blade, played by Wesley Snipes, who is half vampire and half human, so he can walk during the day, and hunts vampires.

Blade works with his mentor, Whistler, to hunt vampires. With the help of a young woman, bitten, who Blade saves from a vampire attack, Blade is forced to fight a vampire Deacon Frost, who is attempting to unlock an ancient ceremony in order to turn from a vampire into La Magra, the Blood God.

Blade fights La Magra, and the battle takes place to see whether the day walking vampire can defeat the blood god or not. This is a great action flick, and there are plenty of very good vampire scenes throughout the film. The sucess of the first led to two sequels.

Underworld (2003)

This movie embraces the idea of the Vampire-Werewolf rivalry, and in this film this rivalry is an all out war, with the werewolves finding new weapons to attack the vampires, and the vampires realizing they need to catch up. This war is brought into the modern day, and this is once again a comic book based movie that is as much action movie as it is a vampire and werewolf movie.

The vampire Selene, who is also one of the top werewolf (called Lycans in the film) hunters, finds out about a terrible secret hidden from most of the vampires by the elders, and after finding a legend about a human who can somehow be both werewolf and vampire, making it a nearly unstoppable power, she must decide where her loyalties really lie and what this means for the war and her people.

This film has a very modern dark and gothic feel to it, with every single scene taking place at night. This is a great action flick that has some really good werewolf to vampire combat taking place. This is a very quick moving film that will find fans even among viewers who generally don't like vampire films.

Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995)

This movie is another spoof from the mind of Mel Brooks. This time he's out to poke fun at the Dracula myth and vampire films in general. Leslie Nielsen, master actor of spoof films, is in this one as Dracula, with Mel Brooks playing his greatest nemesis, the famous Dr. Van Helsing. This film has the usual Mel Brooks spoof, with plenty of singing and dancing while poking fun at vampire movies.

Mel Brooks fans tend to like this film, while vampire movie purists don't, but as far as having a list that shows the wide variety of vampire films out there, the list wouldn't be complete without this one, and a laugh is a good way to end a terrifying marathon.

The movie 300 heralded the beginning of a new era in film making. So hot on the heels of 300, Beowolf suggests that the digital film revolution is beginning to gather pace. How long can actors, agents and cameramen continue to claim that they are an integral part of the film making process?

Many of these movies look so good and their storylines produced and presented so well, that Hollywood and other centers of excellence must be shuddering at the thought of an avalanche of high quality low-budget movies without star names attached which will steal their thunder and ultimately steal their revenues from right under their noses.

Compared to the DVD, the blu-ray yields better definition, which means more accurate colors, greater detail, is more three dimensional, and the sound design is far more balanced. It's not leaps and bounds above the DVD transfer, but it certainly is better. Plus, I don't have to contend with that double sided DVD trying to determine which side is widescreen and which is crappy pan & scan(full screen). Luckyyyy!

I am a martial artist who has practiced kung fu and other martial arts for over a decade, and I am also a big fan of watching great movies, so as you can imagine kung fu and martial arts movies are something that I really enjoy a lot. So this seemed like a natural subject for me to write about, and I have written reviews of individual movies for various websites, but I thought that now it was time for me to put together my ultimate top ten list of the martial arts movies that I most recommend for people to watch, so without any further preamble here they are:

1 - Enter The Dragon: Bruce Lee really was the master and made some of the best kung fu films of all time without any doubt. He was at his peak when making Enter The Dragon, and even now it is still right up there with the best of the best.

2 - The Octagon: Chuck Norris taking on the evil Ninja hordes. They don't make action stars like that anymore do they? They all seem to be pretty boys these days rather than tough guys like Chuck Norris.

3 - The Big Brawl: One of the movies that brought Jackie Chan to the worlds attention.

4 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: A seminal 'modern' martial arts movie with lots of mythical imagery and flying around on wires.

5 - House of Flying Daggers: Similar in style to crouching tiger, this is a beautifully made movie.

6 - Iron Monkey: Less well known that my other choices, but well worth watching.

7 - Zatoichi The Blind Swordsman: great sword fighting action.

8 - The Seven Samurai: I had to include at least one Samurai movie, and this is my personal favourite.

9 - Karate Kid: ok, so the karate kid series of movies were all very corny, but they were the stand out martial arts films of the 80's

10 - Kill Bill: Perhaps this one doesn't fit perfectly into the genre as you usually think about it, but its still great entertainment with some cool sword fighting action.

Up in the Air Best Review

Up in the Air is a dark drama told from the point of view of a management consultant and the various people who pass in and out of his life. He spends most of his time on the road. His job, laying people off, is not the most logical source of comedic material.

To many, the foundations of a good film are big name actors, A-list directing and a current subject. But I have always thought that the foundation of any good film is the same as any good book: a good story based upon interesting ideas. In that sense, the most important thing I gained by watching this movie was a keen desire to read the book upon which it was based. I have not yet read the novel Up in the Air by Walter Kirn. But, I will soon. Because this story is based upon extremely interesting ideas.

This is not a *one-size-fits-all* kind of a story. This story will appeal to a certain group of people yet it is bound to polarize audiences. The key thing you have to ask yourself before you purchase this movie is, "Am I in the group of people that will appreciate this movie, or will I be bored with it?" If you are looking for traditional movie entertainment, this movie is NOT for you. It's slow, deliberate, and at times depressing. But if you have a dark sense of humor and can appreciate films that portray life's darkness without apologies, then you will likely appreciate this movie and where it eventually leads.

About 60% of the way through this movie, I was ready to relegate this to the "average" category. Sure, there were a lot of things that I loved about the movie. I could relate to the dialogue and I could see the deeper significance that belies the story. The paradox between isolation and freedom have seldom been dealt with so directly in a mainstream film. And yet there were obvious problems. It is true that some of the dialogue is trite and forced. At times, the movie drags on, though I believe there is a purpose for that. The point is, if you focus on any one element, it is not perfect. In that sense, it's a lot like real life. And in some ways, this movie captures the isolation of travelling for work better than any other that I could think of.

But then at a certain point, the movie comes together. As far as the plot goes, the actual events that occur are all predictable. And yet the plot is executed in an honest way. It never feels like a plot point was added to either throw us off or to conform to a cliché. It feels more like a recounting than a telling of a story, which is the best compliment a dark comedy can receive.

I love the cast of this movie, though to be honest none of them were given tremendously great lines when looked at as individual parts. This movie is really more than a sum of its parts.

While the core plot is very well structured, there are story elements that I might have done differently. Some of the politically incorrect dialogue given to Clooney's character seems forced. Yet the story is strong enough to overcome those small things. By the end of the film, the things that were annoying in the beginning become after-thoughts.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I enjoyed this film much more than I thought I would. I plan on gifting it to like-minded road-warriors with similarly dark humor. This is one of those stories where both the criticism and the praise have elements of truth to them. You will have to determine if it's the right kind of movie for you.

Up in the Air transforms some painful subjects into smart, sly comedy--with just enough of the pain underneath to give it some weight. Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) spends most of his days traveling around the country and firing people; he's hired by bosses who don't have the nerve to do their layoffs themselves. His life of constant flight suits him--he wants no attachments. But two things suddenly threaten his vacuum-sealed world: his company decides to do layoffs via video conference so they don't have to pay for travel, and Bingham meets a woman named Alex (Vera Farmiga, The Departed), who seems to be the female version of him… and of course, he starts to fall in love. Writer-director Jason Reitman is building a career from funny but thoughtful movies about compromised people--a pregnant teen in Juno, a cigarette-company executive in Thank You for Smoking. George Clooney has a gift for playing smart men who aren't quite as smart as they think they are (Michael Clayton, Out of Sight). The combination is perfect: Bingham is charming and sympathetic but clearly missing something, and Up in the Air captures that absence with clarity and compassion. The outstanding supporting cast includes Anna Kendrick (Rocket Science), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Danny McBride (Pineapple Express), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), and others, each small part pitched exactly right. --Bret Fetzer

Monty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate Edition Best Review

Ten years ago, I dropped on the fancy, deluxe Criterion DVD of Life of Brian and loved it. The multiple commentary tracks and bonus features were great, and the picture was definitely an upgrade from my VHS copy. Many years later, I was a disappointed to see that Criterion didn't take on the task of releasing Life of Brian on Blu-ray, leaving it to Sony. Well, having finally jumped on the Blu-ray bandwagon, I decided to pick up the new disc. All I can say is wow. This completely blows the Criterion DVD out of the water. This is a crystal clear, clean transfer whereas the Criterion version had plenty of scratches, specks, and whatnot dirtying up the image. I had no idea this film could look this good. Most of the bonus features have been carried over, and there is a new retrospective featurette with interviews of all the living Pythons, so parting ways with my old DVD was a piece of cake. To make it even better, the Blu-ray retails for half the price of the Criterion DVD. If you are at all reluctant to double-dip on this one, I highly suggest going for it.

On a Midnight Clear 2000 years ago, three wise men enter a manger where a babe is wrapped in swaddling clothes. It is an infant called Brian...and the three wise men are in the wrong manger. For the rest of his life, Brian (Graham Chapman) finds himself regarded as something of a Messiah, yet he's always in the shadow of this Other Guy from Galilee. Brian is witness to the Sermon of the Mount, but his seat is in such a bad location that he can't hear any of it ("Blessed are the cheesemakers?"). Ultimately he is brought before Pontius Pilate and sentenced to crucifixion, which takes place at that crowded, non-exclusive execution site a few blocks shy of Calvary. Rather than utter the Last Six Words, Brian leads his fellow crucifixees in a spirited rendition of a British music hall cheer-up song "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life." The whole Monty Python gang (Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, and Terry Gilliam) are on hand in multiple roles, playing such sacred characters as Stan Called Loretta, Deadly Dirk, Casts the First Stone, and Intensely Dull Youth; also showing up are Goon Show veteran Spike Milligan and a Liverpool musician named George Harrison.

"Blessed are the cheesemakers," a wise man once said. Or maybe not. But the point is Monty Python's Life of Brian is a religious satire that does not target specific religions or religious leaders (like, say, Jesus of Nazareth). Instead, it pokes fun at the mindless and fanatical among their followers--it's an attack on religious zealotry and hypocrisy--things that that fellow from Nazareth didn't particularly care for either. Nevertheless, at the time of its release in 1979, those who hadn't seen it considered it to be quite "controversial."

Life of Brian, you see, is about a chap named Brian (Graham Chapman) born December 25 in a hovel not far from a soon-to-be-famous Bethlehem manger. Brian is mistaken for the messiah and, therefore, manipulated, abused, and exploited by various religious and political factions. And it's really, really funny. Particularly memorable bits include the brassy Shirley Bassey/James Bond-like title song; the bitter rivalry between the anti-Roman resistance groups, the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea; Michael Palin's turn as a lisping, risible Pontius Pilate; Brian urging a throng of false-idol worshippers to think for themselves--to which they reply en masse "Yes, we must think for ourselves!"; the fact that everything Brian does, including losing his sandal in an attempt to flee these wackos, is interpreted as "a sign." Life of Brian is not only one of Monty Python's funniest achievements, it's also the group's sharpest and smartest sustained satire. Blessed are the Pythons. --Jim Emerson

Even though the Cosby Show is around 20 years old, it's still one of the best sit-coms ever. Bill Cosby is hilarious - a comic genius. His reactions to events are so spontaneous and creative. I haven't seen another comic quite like him. Best of all, the show's plots are both family-friendly and funny. Unlike modern sit-coms, the characters don't curse and talk about sex every other scene. Rather the episodes are centered around family dramas that are realistic but always resolved well. The cast includes everybody from Phylicia Rashad as the tough and very intelligent Mrs. Huxtable, to the young and adorable Rudy. This makes the show accessible to a wide range of audiences. I am glad these finally came out on DVD. I hope one day to share this treasure with my children.

The Cosby Show - Season 1 Overview

Already a presence on television for much of the 1960s and 1970s, in 1984 Bill Cosby debuted his new series THE COSBY SHOW, which went on to become one of the most popular shows on television. Even in its very first year, THE COSBY SHOW was the third highest rated show in America. On the program, Cosby played Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, who along with his wife Claire, an attorney, struggled to balance the challenges of their successful careers with the demands of their five children. Looking back at season 1 of The Cosby Show, it's easy to forget that momentous history was being made. Not only did this immensely popular sitcom hold the #1 spot among all network TV shows for five consecutive seasons (a record that still stands), but it promoted an evolutionary progression that influenced the entire TV industry from that point forward. African Americans had enjoyed sitcom success in the past (on Julia, The Jeffersons, and Good Times), but the idealized family of Cliff and Clair Huxtable (Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad) represented a new and quietly revolutionary perspective; married for 21 years with five children (one in college, a detail unmentioned in the pilot episode), the Huxtables were happy and successful (he's a doctor, she's a lawyer), and issues of race were almost entirely irrelevant to the show's universal appeal. Making their Thursday-night debut on September 20, 1984, they were conceived by Cosby (as "executive consultant Dr. William H. Cosby Jr., Ed.D."), cocreators Ed. Weinberger and Michael Leeson, and executive producers Tom Werner and Marcy Carsey, with a matter-of-fact approach to upgrading the African American image, built upon Cosby's rubber-faced popularity as a stand-up comedian and rooted in the complete and unbiased integration of the black experience into the American mainstream. More to the point, The Cosby Show was eminently respectable family entertainment, perhaps too squeaky-clean for some tastes, but immediately popular at a time when Eddie Murphy (in Beverly Hills Cop) was honing a more profane image that Cosby disapproved of.

The show was also perfectly cast for mass appeal, from the irresistible precociousness of Keshia Knight Pulliam (as the youngest and most charming Huxtable daughter, Rudy) to the stylish adolescence of Lisa Bonet (years before her controversial role in Angel Heart) as 16-year-old Denise; Malcolm-Jamal Warner as outspoken teenager Theo; Tempestt Bledsoe as sensible younger daughter Vanessa; and Sabrina LaBeauf as college student and eventual mother of twins, Sondra. Combined with the effortless chemistry of Cosby and Rashad (credited in Season 1 as Phylicia Ayers Allen), the entire cast forged an easygoing, loosely-rehearsed dynamic that was genuinely familial.

Given The Cosby Show's immense popularity, it's deeply regrettable that the exorbitant cost of original music rights resulted in this DVD release of edited episodes that were shortened, with different music cues added, for perpetual syndication. Fans eager to see the original NBC broadcasts were understandably outraged, and this shortcoming should be addressed in DVD releases of subsequent seasons. In truth, the episodes (including "Goodbye, Mr. Fish," a perfect example of the show's universal appeal) are not significantly diminished by the careful editing; for casual fans, the difference is barely worth mentioning. And while the 90-minute bonus feature "The Cosby Show: A Look Back" (a clip show originally broadcast May 19, 2002) suffers from the conspicuous absence of Bonet (who by then had mostly retreated from show business), it duly conveys the long-term value (and moral values) of the series, which singlehandedly restored the fortunes of NBC while embracing familial togetherness that would inform many of the popular sitcoms that followed its noble example. --Jeff Shannon
