The Italian Job (Special Collector's Edition) Best Review

If the Actors and Crew had as much fun making this film, as I had watching this film, they may have done it for free.

This film is seriously serious, as well as seriously funny and in both cases, they are seriously wonderful. There is a fortune in gold ingots stolen once, stolen twice and on it's way to a third (I'm sure the Russians weren't happy with their payoff).

The Actors play professional master theives who lost the fortune once, along with the death of the gang's mastermind. The rest of the gang, plus the victims daughter, join forces to take back their stolen bounty and seek revenge for the murder of thier beloved leader by an ex-gang member.

The final chase scenes are spectacular, but you don't have to wait till then. You can certainly start enjoying this film from the absolute start.

Decent thief flick - V. Leonelli -
Con man's flick of decent proportions. Very deep cast of actors remake the classic from 1969 of the same title. The opening sequence is Bondish for planning and audacity, and is the highlight of the film. Excellent soundtrack and Venice as a backdrop provides a prime filming location. The car chase scenes in the Mini Coopers were very different and edgy. Jason Stathem has a rather subdued role compared to his Transforporter performances. Edward Norton shines as the dispicable con's con, who gets payback in a rather delicious fashion. Charlize Theron plays the hottie thief, trained by daddy thief. Mark Wahlberg has a major role, but comes off a bit stiff. The movie overall has sort of a pieced together feel to it, but is still a fun flick to watch. Once.

Apple recently surprised the market with its new iPod video, also know as the last generation of iPods. The nationally acclaimed NBC sitcom Friends has gone down in history as one of the most influential television shows. The show's premise follows the life of six "twenty-somethings" living in down town Manhattan. It premiered September 22, 1994 and ran for ten seasons, having its last episode on May 6, 2004. To say that it has made an impact in the twenty-first century is an understatement. With a total of 236 episodes, each quirky story helped to shape and form how American's interacted with one another. I can't remember being a teenager and not watching Friends. It has been an intricate part of my adolescence and I truly wanted to be "one of the Friends", for the show was formed as if you really did feel like you were friends with these characters. It has spawned multiple catch phrases and Friends idioms over the years, such as Joey's infamous "How you doin?" and Janice's whiney "Oh, My God!". It even spawned a hair-do in the nineties called "The Rachel"!

As I step back and viewed with a critical eye, four episodes from season eight, airing in 2002, it helped me to realize just how much our culture is portrayed within each of these six Friends. At this point in the series, it was already a smash hit, and everyone was tuning in to see what would come next for these characters. Ross and Rachel had just had their baby, Emma and were now living together, yet not in a relationship. Monica and Chandler were married and trying to conceive, Phoebe had just started to date Mike (who would become her husband) and Joey was back on Days of Our Lives. Each had already turned thirty and had matured in their characters.
However, regardless of the story, its format allowed for viewers to turn in on any episode and still have an enjoyable experience. This was one of the many selling points of the series. It was filled with light humor, gags, cultural references, and physical comedy. All ages were able to watch this show and connect in one way or another.
In the episode "The One with Ross's Inappropriate Song" (each episode is labeled as "The One with...") Ross tries to get his baby daughter to laugh and when he is out of ideas, he begins to rap the hit cult song "Baby Got Back", a popular song from the nineties. The song makes her laugh and when Rachel gets back, she is obviously horrified that he could ever sing such an offensive rap song to their child. Yet, when she herself fails to get Emma to laugh, Rachel also resorts to singing "Baby Got Back". These small, yet hilarious stories are what make Friends so special. They are every day people with situations that we can relate to. Later in the season, it is revealed that Monica and Chandler are infertile and are faced with the issues of adoption and surrogacy, leading them to eventually adopting twins. Yet with each problem, it is handled with comedy and an appropriate amount of seriousness. We laughed with them and we cried with them. Infertility has become a major issue of today's society and it was appropriate that one of the Friends had to deal with it.

One thing I will mention is that their lifestyles are often overlooked because of the show's light humor and happy demeanor. When in actuality, the amount of casual sex each Friend had I am surprised that they had not been more affected by STD's, emotional problems, and more unwanted pregnancies. When watching a show like Friends, it is necessary as a teenager or a parent that these issues are addressed, and you can view the shows without receiving a skewed picture on causal sex or morality. A major issue when watching television or anything in that matter is that you recognize it as fiction and separating it from reality. For example, in actuality none of the characters could ever afford to live in such luxurious apartments in Manhattan and with the time you see them sitting around, it appears as if they never are working!

Overall, you are the one who is responsible analyze what you are viewing and understand how you are being affected by it. With the series Friends there are multiple positive attributes like a strong committed group of friends and knowing how to love one another in community. Yet, they are not to be viewed as people living "moral" lives and we can't expect them to, they are just a reflection of the culture. This show has been for a long time one of my absolute favorite television series. With the release of the DVD box sets, viewers were now able to watch every single episode over and over again, learning the lines and laughing with the Friends. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this series and think the good outweigh the bad in this very likable sitcom.

Friends' penultimate season could well be called "The One with All the Romantic Arcs." Phoebe meets Mike (Paul Rudd virtually joining the ensemble). Rachel attempts to "move on" from Ross with a rival co-worker (guest star Dermot Mulroney). Ross meets Charley (Aisha Tyler, welcome colorblind casting), a paleontologist with an intimidating roster of Nobel Prize-winners in her dating history (so, of course, she hooks up with Joey). Other storylines, including Chandler's transfer to Tulsa and Rachel's sudden lust for Joey, are not as compelling as previous seasons', and an indication that inspiration is flagging. But while one is hard-pressed to add any of these episodes to the Friends pantheon, what redeems the season are the grace notes: Phoebe channeling a New England WASP to impress Mike's parents ("The One with Ross's Inappropriate Song") or playing naughty girl to Ross's "daddy" ("The One with the Lottery"); Joey's confession that he doesn't get it when people punctuate the air with finger quotes ("The One Where Emma Cries"); and Chandler's discomfort (and ultimate revenge) as an audience member at a ranting feminist's one-woman show ("The One with the Soap Opera Party").

On the guest star front, Friends welcomes back Jon Lovitz, who reprises his character from the classic first-season episode, "The One with the Stoned Guy" in "The One with the Blind Dates," and Hank Azaria as David the "Science Guy" who returns to complicate Phoebe's love life. Christina Applegate is a riot as "Rachel's Other Sister," and it's surprising that NBC didn't go all Suddenly Susan on Freddie Prinz Jr. after his surprisingly funny stint in "The One with the Male Nanny." Selma Blair is a seductive co-worker who makes a play for Chandler in "The One with Christmas in Tulsa," and Jeff Goldblum portrays a master thespian who mistakes Joey's urge to urinate as method acting. For Friends fanatics, it's a coup to get the episodes complete and uncut as opposed to their commercial-laden syndicated counterparts. My Favorite Top 10 Comedy Movies

I have always been a movie fanatic for as far back as I can remember and although I have enjoyed all genres, I especially gravitated to comedy movies for the most part. My father and I would sit watching comedy movies and laugh until it hurt and on Fridays in the summer, it was always a given that my parents would take my sister and I to the Drive-In Theater. (Does anyone remember them?) If it was a comedy, that was a double plus for us. So, for me to say that I love comedy movies would be a vast understatement and for me to make a Favorite Top 10 list is literally next to impossible. In fact, making a Top 20 would be hard enough as it is, but I am going to try anyway. I will cover groups of movies and some solo movies and then try to accomplish my feat for the evening. And although this will be my most difficult task to date, I will most definitely enjoy the memories that these movies provide to me and hopefully for you also.

The In-Laws with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin is so funny and enjoyable. The way that Falk's character slowly gets Arkin's character, Sheldon, involved with all of his CIA shenanigans is priceless. A definite must see for those who have never heard of this gem. "Serpentine Sheldon, serpentine!"

Let It Ride is one of the most unique comedies I have ever seen, in that, every character is nuts. I mean, in every comedy you have some normal people and then the funny ones. But this movie has no normal people. It takes place at the race track and everyone is a funny character. Richard Dreyfuss is great as Trotter, as he is with every character he portrays. What About Bob?, Moon Over Parador & The Goodbye Girl, to name a few, are terrific Dreyfuss movies.

Since I already mentioned it, What About Bob? is a classic with Dreyfuss and one of my favorites, Bill Murray. I love watching Murray drive Dreyfuss crazy ever so slowly during the course of the movie. 'Baby Steps'. And when you speak of Bill Murray, you have to acknowledge Stripes, Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, Scrooged and of course, Caddyshack. What a terrific cast Caddyshack had. It was Harold Ramis' first attempt at directing and he did a fantastic job in making what is now a Golf Country Club classic that had so many memorable lines delivered by the irrepressible Rodney Dangerfield. The war between him and Ted Knight was hysterical. "Hey, who stepped on a duck?"

The Producers is a Mel Brooks masterpiece and a screenplay Oscar winner. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder are so superb in those roles. The idea was to sell much more than 100% of a Broadway play to investors and make sure it is a flop by acquiring the worst script, 'Springtime For Hitler', the worst actors, director, music and anything else to assure a quick closing. This way they could keep the money without paying the investors back. But of course the play is a hit and there is no possible way they can pay everyone back, since they sold about 5000%. So they end up in jail and do they learn their lesson? Nope! They produce 'Prisoners In Love' and sell the warden 200%. While on the subject of Mel Brooks, how can I not list Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History Of The World Part 1 and another favorite, Blazing Saddles. The absolute Best Comedy Western of all time, period. Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Harvey Korman, Mel Brooks, Slim Pickens and of course, Mongo (Alex Karas). What a blast!

The Pink Panther movies are some of the best works of the great Peter Sellers. Inspector Clouseau had to be one of the funniest bumbling fools to ever grace the silver screen. A Shot In The Dark, The Pink Panther Strikes Again and Revenge Of The Pink Panther were such great vehicles for Sellers. And on the topic of Peter Sellers, how about Being There, The Mouse That Roared and Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. Peter Sellers plays 3 roles in this movie and makes them all so funny and memorable, a tribute to his comedic acting genius.

A Day At The Races with the Marx Brothers would make my Top 5 of all time no matter how long a list I had. I loved the Marx Brothers and this movie is one of my absolute favorites. They were so off the wall and this movie had so many incredible funny scenes. Then you have A Night At The Opera, Monkey Business, Duck Soup and Horse Feathers.

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein was so great to watch as a kid. Here were the monsters of the times that used to scare us, Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolfman, and now here they were in a comedy with one of the best Comedy Teams of all time. What a treat! That whole scene with Costello in the hotel room and Lon Chaney,Jr has already changed into the Wolfman. Lou didn't know it and is so close to getting killed. A great comedy effect of anticipation.

Sleeper is a great Woody Allen movie. The premise was he was revived 200 years after being frozen cryogenically. The results were as funny as you would expect from an early Woody Allen movie. Let me also give tribute to Bananas, Annie Hall, What's New Pussycat?, Play It Again Sam, Take The Money And Run and Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask).

Monty Python And The Holy Grail is a true classic with so many funny and out of the ordinary scenes. I especially loved the scene with the sword fight at the bridge and the loser has his limbs sliced off one by one and yet keeps insisting that he is winning the battle. Even when he is just a torso on the ground he states, "So we'll call it draw then?" Let's also throw in Monty Python's Life Of Brian and Monty Python's Meaning Of Life. On the side, I must mention that if you ever have the time to see a play on Broadway, then by all means go see Spamalot. I laughed the whole entire play and you don't even have to be a Monty Python fan to laugh your fool head off, as I did.

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was the first comedy movie of it's kind. It was the first movie with an all star cast like that. Anyone who was anybody in comedy at that time wanted to be in that movie, even if it was just a small cameo appearance. If you weren't in that movie, you weren't on the comedy map, so to speak. One of the great comedy premises for a movie and an absolute amazing cast of actors, headed by Spencer Tracy. A must see for any generation.

The Nutty Professor and The Errand Boy are terrific comedy performances by Jerry Lewis. I know the word genius is used a lot but Mr. Lewis certainly proves that he is in those two classics. The Nutty Professor remake with Eddie Murphy was fantastic too. A virtual tour de force comedy performance by him with all of his family characters. Plus, I must mention two movies with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis together to complete his work: The Stooge and The Caddy. "Whose you're little whosie? Whose you're turtle dove?"

Now I would like to write about some comedy movies of more recent times. There's Something About Mary is hysterical with so many unique scenes that have never been done before, and in comedy that is extremely hard to do. The scene with Matt Dillon and the dog is one of my most favorite scenes of all time. I literally fell out of my chair laughing at that one. He accidentally kills the dog and tries to resuscitate him by giving him an electric jolt with the live wire from a nearby table lamp. Ben Stiller has really made a name for himself in the business, which makes sense knowing that his parents are Jerry Stiller and Ann Meara. And when talking about Ben you must mention Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers and Night At The Museum.

Analyze That with Billy Crystal and Robert DeNiro was great and though it was a sequel to Analyze This, I loved it even more. The scene when DeNiro comes down to the Shiva with his robe open and nothing on underneath was hysterical. "Hey, who do you have to f*#k around here to get some bacon? Not you I hope." Mr. DeNiro, as everyone knows, is a tremendous serious actor, but he delivers comedy equally as well, as he did in Midnight Run with Charles Grodin. They were supposed to make a sequel for that but never did. I wish they had. Other Billy Crystal movies I have loved are City Slickers 1 & 2, Mr. Saturday Night and When Harry Met Sally.

Liar, Liar with Jim Carrey is terrific. But of course, I love Carrey in everything. He is so animated, rubbery faced and one of my favorite comedic actors. I love the outtakes at the end of the movie also. They really show his improvisational abilities well. Then there is Bruce Almighty, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas and Me, Myself & Irene.

My Cousin Vinny is a well written and wonderfully acted comedy movie with Joe Pesci, Fred Gwynne and Marisa Tomei. In fact, Miss Tomei won an Oscar for her role. The chemistry between the three of them on screen was terrific, as were all of the courtroom scenes. In the words of the judge, "What's a yute?"

Something's Gotta Give was very funny with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. What a great script. I think it should have won an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Of course, you can never go wrong with Jack in the movie. He has such a great face. Even in the horror flick, The Shining, he makes me laugh. The Witches Of Eastwick, Terms Of Endearment, As Good As It Gets, Batman and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and so many more are such an amazing body of work.

Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor is absolutely hysterical and their chemistry together was wonderful to watch. They did a few more movies together and they delivered some belly laughs also. Another You, Silver Streak and See No Evil, Hear No Evil.

*Before you read anymore of this review, please excuse the corny pun in the title* I was hesitant about watching this series, mainly because I didn't see much of Rickey Gervais' work, but hte work I saw I didn't like that much. But when some of the episodes were on HBO I started to watch. And I started to laugh. The show was very funny. Whether it was the bubbly and eager additude of Andy (Gervais) or the bumbling wit of Maggie (Ugly Betty's Ashley Jensen). As for the DVD itself, the packaging persists of nice artwork in an accessible style. Inside of the package is seasons (or series) one and two and the "Extra Special" series finale. Each season contains 6 episodes. Each season features those six episodes on two discs. The quality of the picture is outstanding. If you are, or were, a fan of the show this purchase is definitely worth it.

I've watched it through 3 times already. The series is short and hilarious, with the greatest finale I've ever seen in a TV show. As with Gervais's other works, there's a satirical, darker side to the story that makes this my favorite show.

Fans of "Dirty Dancing" seem to get hooked on it, and if you're like me, there's no such thing as watching it too many times. There's a reason why this sleeper took off, and has remained a staple in the coming-of-age genre since its release.

This film remains my personal favorite, and the 20th Anniversary Edition has it all in terms of what was going on behind the scenes, screen tests, different versions of some of the scenes, some with additional footage that was edited out, as well as scenes that were not included in the film. The extra information on this edition highlights what it took to come up with the final version of the film, and watching the extra footage enhances our understanding of the characters we've loved, as well as the story, while showcasing the expertise of the editors in knowing what to leave out. It's an engaging, entertaining view of what gave us the final version of "Dirty Dancing" that has endured.

As with Grease (1978) and Footloose (1984) before it, Dirty Dancing was a cultural phenomenon that now plays more like camp. That very campiness, though, is part of its biggest charm. And if the dancing in the movie doesn't seem particularly "dirty" by today's standards--or 1987's--it does take place in an era (the early '60s) when it would have. Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey, daughter of ageless hoofer Joel Grey) has been vacationing in the Catskills with her family for many years. Uneventfully. One summer, she falls under the sway (as it were) of dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Baby is a pampered pup, but Johnny is a man of the world. Baby's father, Jake (Law and Order's Jerry Orbach), can't see the basic decency in greaser Johnny that she can. It should come as no surprise to find that Baby, who can be as immature as her name, learns more about love and life--and dancing--from free-spirited Johnny than traditionalist Jake.

Dirty Dancing spawned two successful soundtracks, a short-lived TV series, and a stage musical. It may be predictable, but Grey and Swayze have chemistry, charisma, and all the right moves. It's a sometimes silly movie with occasionally mind-boggling dialogue--"No one puts Baby in a corner!"--that nonetheless carries an underlying message about tolerance and is filled with the kind of exuberant spirit that's hard for even the most cynical to resist. i wish id known there was such a difference between the versions, so beware. i got the ultimate--but it is not. saw the newer one in a store and it has many extras that ultimate does not. i am ordering the 20th ann. one--NOT on blu ray--and donating the ultimate to the library.






AVOID THIS BLU-RAY~ - R. Casper - Boise, ID USA
First, the movie, the story, the characters are all wonderful, they get 5 stars. This Blu-ray, it gets a 1 star (I wish I could give it less). A common issue with early blu-ray discs are lack of qualtiy. The color, graininess and "WIDESCREEN" on this Blu-ray are all a joke. Talking to the people who did the work on this Blu-ray; if you're going to transfer garbage then all you're going to get is 1080p, hi-def garbage! Whoever did the work on this Blu-ray release does not know what they are doing and most likely did not care. The skin tones go from just OK to bright pink and even orange (we're talking skin tones that would make an Oompa-loompa jealous). The transfer is also dark, lacking all the great details that the movie is known for, leaving those of us who watch this film with a less than full (forget about "BEYOUND HIGH DEFINITION") experience. The graininess on every version of this film is bad and this Blu-Ray is no exception, it is very distracting. Then, finally, the "WIDESCREEN" part of my review, the back of the Blu-ray tells us that it is 16x9 or 1.85.1 - DUH! The thing is Blu-ray, of course it is widescreen! Not to mention that they stretched the whole thing, the people look like they've all been on a mid-evil torture device.
My advice is to stick with the "Ultimate" version of the movie on DVD and watch it though your Blu-ray player's up-converter feature. You will end up with a much more enjoyable experience

1, 3, 2, 4 - The Order of Prison Break Quality - James - Baghdad, Iraq
Season 4 of Prison Break... Let's talk about it.

So, they're out of both Prisons now and working together tying to beat the clock with Homeland Security offering their freedom for their help recovering files from The Company. Mahone, Scholfield. Lincoln, Sucre, Bellick, Sara and a new techy try to work together and try to push aside their personal grievances to try and take down the Company while some of the people are trying to find a way out of their current situation. While Theodore (T-Bag) chases down the clues in the "Bird-Watching" Book.

Realistically, this season is a joke. The twists and turns are cheesy and corny at best. The dark and ominous music played with what is supposed to be an intense situation is laughable. Agent Self played by Michael Rapaport is an absolute terrible casting call for that character. They could have chosen someone better to play that part. More simply said, a few street cons and a couple law enforcement agents could not do what they're trying to accomplish in this Season.

It seems to me that the writers for this season got lazy. They were told when the season started that it would be their last season and allowed them to finish it out. The finishing season is honestly, atrocious. Plain and simple.

Lean on Me (Snap Case) Best Review

I saw this movie when it was first released and loved its performances and messages. The inspirational story, based on the controversial Joe Clark, gives the movie an authenticity that pays off.

After all these years, I'm watching it again and appreciating what a great performance we get from Morgan Freeman. Every line, every expression--just priceless. Rolling his eyes as he reads answers over a student's shoulder during a test made me laugh out loud. His nonstop rants against students, teachers, parents, pretty everybody are both funny and powerful.

Around this same time, Freeman put out two other movies. One was GLORY. The speech he gives as a former slave-turned-soldier at the campfire before the big climactic battle brought tears to my eyes. The other movie was STREET SMART with Christopher Reeve. Freeman plays a pimp who blackmails Reeve for an alibi and he's absolutely chilling. That an actor can go from powerful righteousness to pure evil in two movies is amazing.

LEAN ON ME is a good movie with a wonderful message. But it's a great performance from one of our finest American actors.

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002), was an uneven, and somewhat unsteady feature film debut, for the intrepid webhead. With the preliminaries out of the way, Spider-Man 2 (2004) is a bit scattered in places, but is still a more streamlined and focused effort, that solidly delivers action, drama, and excitement. Technical advances in special effects, and a tighter screenplay, contribute to the impressiveness of the film.

Alfred Molina is cast as Dr. Otto Octavius, and he nails the character almost perfectly. Although it might have been better if they had him keep his shirt on, and made him look slimmer. Donna Murphy as Octavius's wife Rosalie, has a brief but key role, demonstrating that Otto is really a lovable, sensitive guy, who only becomes delusional, when his mind is taken over by his mechanical arms.

The sequel picks up some two years later, with Peter Parker (Toby Maguire) in college and living in New York City, but struggling to keep a steady job, pay his rent, and maintain his grades. Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) has moved on, and is involved with astronaut John Jameson (Daniel Gillies), son of J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons). Harry Osborn (James Franco) has assumed a significant role in Oscorp, and is backing Dr. Octavius's fusion experiment. When an accident occurs during a test, Rosalie is killed, and a set of `smart' mechanical arms becomes fused to Octavius's body. The arms take over his mind, and after disposing of a surgical team, Octavius decides to finance his fusion experiments by turning to crime. Doc Ock and Spidey tangle for the first time, in a spectacular battle inside a bank, which continues up on the side of a building, with a very plucky Aunt May (Rosemary Harris), in the middle of the fray.

The subtext of the film is Peter's inner conflict about being Spider-Man, which apparently is keeping him from finding happiness. The conflict manifests physically, when Peter becomes nearsighted, and occasionally loses the ability to generate his webbing. The resulting George of the Jungle like crash landings, get old fast. Peter's head gets so messed up, that he sees a psychiatrist, who screws him up even more. Peter tosses his costume into the trash, quits being Spider-Man, and returns to a `normal' life, looking like Harry Potter. Peter is blasted out of complacency, when Doc Ock kidnaps MJ.

The special effects are stunning, as Spidey returns to battle Doc Ock on a train. Unfortunately the ending of this thrilling sequence, is marred by pure idiocy, as Spider-Man makes like Fred Flintstone, trying to stop the train using his feet. Spidey winds up without his mask, this time before a trainload of witnesses. Doc Ock is relentless, and delivers an unconscious Spider-Man to Harry Osborn in return for the tritium he needs for his experiments. Doc Ock didn't bother to unmask Spidey, but Harry does, becoming perhaps the 100th person, to discover Peter's `secret' identity.

The film's final battle is visually impressive, and quite brutal, but still somehow kind of hollow and contrived, as Doc Ock regains his senses, and decides to try and redeem himself, by `drowning' the fusion reaction, and sadly himself as well. Doc joins The Goblin in supervillain heaven, after becoming the 101st, to discover that Peter is Spider-Man. MJ follows as the 102nd, and the crisis ends on a romantic, but bittersweet note. Harry receives a visit from his dead father, while in a very uncool move, Mary Jane mimics The Graduate, setting the stage for Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man 2 is the best of the three films produced so far. The central story involving Doc Ock is strong, an effort is made to devote some quality time to Aunt May, and a few moments are spent with JJ Jameson, and the Daily Bugle gang. The MJ/Peter relationship remains pretty awkward, and sometimes silly, but is still an improvement over the first film. Kirsten Dunst shines, when put in a dangerous situation.

It seems that Sam Raimi can't resist unmasking Spider-Man. Perhaps he believes that providing proof that Maguire is really inside the costume, results in the audience identifying more with the character, but it is just so overdone. Spider-Man 2 nicely builds momentum, and moves forward strongly. It loses focus at times and gets off on a few silly tangents, some related to trying appeal to a youthful audience. The resolution may not be entirely satisfying, and but the overall ride is quite exciting and fun.

DVD Features:

The first commentary track is by director Sam Raimi and a self-deprecating Tobey Maguire speaking in tandem, and producer (and Marvel CEO) Avi Arad and coproducer Grant Curtis speaking in tandem. They discuss a number of topics, including Raimi's memory of his excitement over Richard Donner's Superman and how the character of Black Cat had to be dropped from the film. The second commentary is by six members of the Oscar-nominated effects team, and one of their primary focuses is how Doc Ock's arms were achieved by a combination of puppetry and CGI.

The centerpiece of the second disc is a massive two-hour documentary that can be viewed all at once or in 12 separate pieces. It covers the development of the story, the visual effects, costumes, stunts, and sound and music. Three shorter featurettes cover Peter Parker's struggle between his personal and hero lives, Doc Ock, and the women in Spider-Man's life, and what's interesting is how they discuss those topics not just in relation to the movies but to the comic books as well. (For example, Betty Brant and Gwen Stacy had a much greater impact in the comics.) There's a scene in which you can toggle among three different camera angles, and a gallery of 17 paintings Alex Ross created for the opening sequence. Who Ever Said Being a Superhero Would be Easy? - A.P. Fuchs / Canister X -
In this second installment in the Spider-Man franchise, Peter Parker has his back against the wall as he tries to juggle life as a student, being best friends with Mary Jane Watson, carrying the guilt of his uncle's death, freelancing for the Daily Bugle, delivering pizza, and, of course, being ever on-call as your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man.

No matter how hard he tries, Peter just can't seem to balance everything at once and the constant sacrifices he makes in his personal life so he can help others wears him down . . . down . . . down . . . until he can't take it anymore and his spider-powers begin to change.

Then vanish.

The timing couldn't have been worse, either, because Dr. Otto Octavius's energy device backfired and has fused four robotic arms to his body, their AI worming its way into his brain, controlling him. All they care about is fulfilling their purpose and they don't care who they have to hurt to recreate the device they were made for.

Dr. Octopus's (Doc Ock) rampage through New York is met with little resistance until our favorite web-slinger attempts to take him on.

This movie thrills the inner fanboy much more than its predecessor and officially is my favorite so far in the Spider-Man series. This flick carries near start-to-finish classic superhero goodness: stellar aerial battles, eye-popping web-slinging, dual identity troubles, nerd-can't/won't-get-the-girl issues, a hardcore villain bent on his mark, trials, sacrifice--all crammed into a little over two-hour movie. But the pacing works and doesn't feel over cluttered at all.

You feel for Peter Parker every minute of this film, both when he's at the top of his game and when he's at the bottom, and when he loses his spider-powers, your heart sinks and you cry out, "No! Not Peter! His powers are part of who he is. How can you take them away?"

Tobey Maguire was extremely believable in this film and brought a real depth to Parker that--though was present in the first one--really shone through in this one. And Alfred Molina as Doc Ock? Such duality. When you first meet Otto Octavius, he genuinely seems like a nice guy, an almost fatherly figure in a way, but when he loses his project and those he cares about, things switch and he barely resembles the man he once was. Yet deep within, you see him struggling against the mechanical arms that have taken over his body and mind.

J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson was hilarious as always, and Kirsten Dunst as MJ--there was more maturity in the character this time around and though she still acted kind of "high school-ish," you also saw someone struggling with who they were--more specifically, trying desperately to reach out to the man she's fallen for but who is pushing her away.

Spider-Man 2 thrilled me to pieces. I was there on opening night and I left the theatre all smiles and in a state of disbelief at how downright cool it was. I wasn't sure if it would top the first one because most sequels--till that point because the Superman movies and the previous set of Batman films were pretty much what we had to go on except for X2--usually don't nail it like the first one.

I was proven wrong.

This movie rocked so hard I went back a couple more times and bought it on DVD as soon as I could.

Check this flick out. You're in for an amazingly cool, web-slinging good time.

Glorious; simply glorious! - Andrew Ellington - Mulholland Drive
It's no surprise to many people here that I consider `Spider-Man 3' to be a travesty. I was looking forward to that movie so much and I was let down SOOOO much by the sloppy construction, poor visuals, ridiculous scripting and overall messy structure. The reason I was looking forward to it was because, as many have already stated (critics alike), `Spider-Man 2' is probably the best superhero movie EVER!

Plot holes or not, I still slightly prefer `The Dark Knight' (I love my superheroes to have a little grit on them).

Where `Spider-Man' was a nicely constructed origin story, `Spider-Man 2' becomes a brilliantly orchestrated expansion on that origin, complete with a profound moral structure that elevates the film from a mere `comic book movie'. With a solid script that really gets to the heart of the characters and makes them real and relatable, `Spider-Man 2' is an outstanding film, no matter what genre you place it in. It has layer upon layer of interesting and memorable development.

The film is, in a word, very complex (but that is a good thing).

Picking up where the first film left off, Peter Parker is struggling to accept who he has become. He still suffers from guilt, but he has masked that guilt with a newfound responsibility. That responsibility is making it very difficult for Peter to strike a needed balance between his personal life and that of being Spider-Man. This is making his budding romance with Mary Jane Watson more aggravating than it should be. His past actions (involving a certain flying villain) have posed a threat to Peter's relationship with his best friend Harry, who has vowed to avenge his father's death. When you add to that a brilliant man controlled by his own genius (a marvelous Alfred Molina), you have a recipe for some exciting and provoking entertainment.

And that is JUST what `Spider-Man 2' proves to be.

Sam Raimi is at his very best here. What I admire so much about this film is that, while Raimi definitely `goes there' in the visual department, he never goes so far that the film appears fake. That was one of my biggest issues with that Spider-Mess of a third film. Everything was SOOOO computer animated that it came off like a really bad video game. Not so here. Sure, there is a lot going on, but everything maintains a crisp, slickness to it that establishes a sense of realism. Yes, I know that it is improbable that a tentacle clad man is ever going to scale buildings and wreck havoc in the streets, but Raimi made me wholly believe that it is not impossible. His attention to detail here is impeccable. I love the way that Raimi captured what it felt like to read a Spider-Man comic book as a boy. The film has this light and airy (colorful) feel to it, yet it is laced with that suspense that only comes from truly engrossing yourself in this character and his purpose.

Bravo.

And yet still, the most impressive facet of `Spider-Man 2' is the fact that it has a real heart. It is less the story of a superhero and more the story of a complex and conflicted young man, trying desperately to juggle his life in a way that makes the most sense; paying his dues where they belong while still developing a life that will satisfy and complete him.

We are all Peter Parker, minus the superpowers.

I still firmly believe that Toby Maguire was BORN to play this part, and it is still the only role I've ever really believed him in. He is not my favorite actor, but this is one of my favorite characters, and my heart is welled up in this man because of what Maguire does here.

I could really relate to Peter Parker's plight when I saw Spider-Man 2 theatrically. During that time, I was lazy and always late; disappointing my professors and yes, even employers. I was brilliant but couldn't quite pull it together. It's nice to be reminded of an actual personal connection I had to a superhero character.

I'm tempted to make an erectile dysfunction joke about Toby Maguire losing his powers but that isn't the right metaphor so I won't.

Spider-Man 2 has uncommonly witty, intentionally funny dialogue for the comic book movie genre. Here are some of my favorite exchanges:

Peter: "I've been reading poetry lately."
Mary Jane: "Whatever that means."

Miss Brant: "Sir, your wife's on the line, she said she lost her checkbook."
J. Jonah Jameson: "Thanks for the good news!"

And of course, anything from Mr. Ditkovich, the humorous, debt-obsessed Russian landlord for Peter's apartment building:

Ditkovich: "Rent!"
Peter: "Hi."
Ditkovich: "Hi? What's hi? Can I spend it?"

Ditkovich: "If promises were crackers, my daughter would be fat."

A happy, glasses-wearing, 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' montage is infinitely better than Spider-Man 3's jackass, emo-hair Saturday Night Fever montage.

High points: Alex Ross' spectacular opening title design, Ditkovich and his family (including a cameo by Louis Lombardi aka Edgar Stiles from 24), an Evil Dead-style hospital massacre, Alfred Molina, J.K. Simmons, Doc Ock lighting a cigar with one of his tentacles, the lakeside climax and "Go get 'em, tiger".

Low points: James Franco's acting, Aunt May's 30-minute monologue, little "Henry" the plot device, a mask-less Spider-Man saving dozens of saintly train passengers (in a Crucifix pose) who promise to keep his secret safe.

This superior sequel ends on a curiously dark, almost chilling music cue and a worried look on Kirsten Dunst's face that left me feeling a bit uneasy.
