A handful of people in the San Fernando Valley are having one hell of a day. TV mogul Earl Partridge (Jason Robards) is on his deathbed; his trophy wife (Julianne Moore) is popping pills with alarming frequency. Earl's nurse (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is trying desperately to get in touch with Earl's only son, sex guru Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise), who's about to have his carefully constructed past blown by a TV reporter (April Grace). Whiz kid Stanley (Jeremy Blackman) is being goaded by his selfish dad into breaking the record for the game show What Do Kids Know? Meanwhile, Stanley's predecessor, the grown-up quiz kid Donnie Smith (William H. Macy) has lost his job and is nursing a severe case of unrequited love. And the host of What Do Kids Know?, the affable Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall), like Earl, is dying of cancer, and his attempt to reconcile with his cokehead daughter (Melora Walters) fails miserably. She, meanwhile, is running hot and cold with a cop (John C. Reilly) who would love to date her, if she can sit still for long enough. And over it all, a foreboding sky threatens to pour something more than just rain.

This third feature from Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights) is a maddening, magnificent piece of filmmaking, and it's an ensemble film to rank with the best of Robert Altman--every little piece of the film means something, and it's solidly there for a reason. Deftly juggling a breathtaking ensemble of actors, Anderson crafts a tale of neglectful parents, resentful children, and love-starved souls that's amazing in scope, both thematically and emotionally. Part of the charge of Magnolia is seeing exactly how may characters Anderson can juggle, and can he keep all those balls in air (indeed he can, even if it means throwing frogs into the mix). And it's been far too long since we've seen a filmmaker whose love of making movies is so purely joyful, and this electric energy is reflected in the actors, from Cruise's revelatory performance to Reilly's quietly powerful turn as the moral center of the story. While at three hours it's definitely not suited to everyone's taste, Magnolia is a compelling, heartbreaking, ultimately hopeful mediation on the accidents of chance that make up our lives. Shot in sunny Toronto and set to a dreamy score, Lie With Me looks and sounds like an art film, but the end result isn't quite so lofty. The plot is thin and the dialogue superfluous, but no matter--Canada's Clément Virgo (Love Come Down) just wants to turn you on and he has enlisted two attractive, uninhibited young performers to assist in his aims. Leila (Lauren Lee Smith, The L Word) and David (Eric Balfour, Six Feet Under) meet at a party. He's with his girlfriend, but finds himself drawn to her. The feeling is mutual. She's alone, but quickly finds an unattached hipster with whom to have a tryst. David catches her in the act. Instead of turning away, he watches. They start seeing each other immediately afterwards. "I'm not hooked on danger, [I'm] hooked on sex," Leila claims, but she isn't exactly the most trustworthy narrator. She wants a purely physical relationship, while David wants something more. They return to their old lives, but the obsession refuses to die. Based on the novella by Virgo's partner, Tamara Berger, Lie With Me plays like a low-budget cross between Adrian Lyne's overrated 9 1/2 Weeks and Wayne Wang's underrated The Center of the World. --Kathleen C. The Office: Season Four Specifications

Is a season of The Office with less episodes still a great season? That seems to be the debate among the Emmy-winning sitcom's faithful audience in regard to season four, which like every program in 2007 and 2008 suffered due to the Writers Guild strike. But even a truncated season can't dispel the fact that The Office remains one of television's funniest and most consistently inventive programs. If a theme can be grafted upon season four, it's Things Fall Apart: former temp Ryan (writer-producer B.J. Novak) is promoted to executive position and then squanders that power, while Dwight (series MPV Rainn Wilson) attempts to recover from his breakup with Angela (Angela Kinsey) and her apparent relationship with the hapless Andy (Ed Helms). Elsewhere, HR's Toby (writer-director Paul Lieberstein) finally flees Dunder Mifflin for that long-threatened vacation to Costa Rica (and is replaced by Oscar nominee Amy Ryan), and Stanley (Leslie David Baker) reaches his own breaking point in "Did I Stutter?" The center of office entropy is, of course, boss Michael Scott (Steve Carell), who is knocked off his pedestal throughout the season; his sweetly naïve television spot is disparaged in "Local Ad," he's passed over for the executive outing in "Survivor Man," and in the season's highlights, he is forced to twice endure humiliation at the hands of his own girlfriend Jan (Melora Hardin), first in the heartbreaking "Deposition," and then immediately after in the Emmy-nominated "Dinner Party," which puts their disintegrating relationship in sharp focus. Even office lovebirds Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) experience some rocky moments as Jim anguishes over the right time to propose to her. But don't let that laundry list of disasters fool you into thinking that season four is a downer; if anything, many of the episodes are among the funniest the show has produced to date. Most notable among these are the opener "Fun Run" (the Scranton team participates in Michael's charity race for rabies prevention), "Job Fair" (Michael attempts to hawk Dunder Mifflin to high schoolers, while Jim struggles to land a client), and the aforementioned "Dinner Party" and "Goodbye, Toby." Longtime viewers may wince at some of the broader gags in the season, like Michael and Dwight driving into the lake in "Dunder Mifflin Infinity," but the best episodes are so strong--and Carell and his fellow players so dead-on in their performances--that it's hard to make a case against the season for those relatively few low points. Extras in the season-four set are fewer than in previous releases, though that may have to do with the reduced number of episodes. Deleted scenes are offered for every episode, and many are real gems, most notably those in "Dinner Party" and "Goodbye Toby." A smattering of commentaries is also included; Carell and Krasinski are noticeably absent, but Wilson, Fischer and the writing and directing staff more than make up for their absence. And the featurette "Writer's Block," which includes footage of the writers' panel at an Office convention, gives an amusing alternate to the usual behind-the-scenes coverage. Michael's complete ad for Dunder Mifflin, a battery of amusing faux PSAs for rabies, and a gag reel do much to fill out the supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

You may be surprised to discover that the director of the Lethal Weapon movies and scary horror flick The Omen, Richard Donner, also produced and directed this classic children's adventure (which, by the way, was written by Donner's screen-wizard friend Steven Spielberg). Then again you may not. The Goonies, like Donner's other movies, is the same story of good versus evil. It has its share of bad guys (the Fratelli brothers and their villainous mother), reluctant-hero good guys (the Walsh bothers and their gang of friends), and lots of corny one-liners. Like in an old-fashioned Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew plot, the Goonies need to solve a problem: a corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighborhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin (Rudy, Encino Man) and Martha Plimpton (Pecker, 200 Cigarettes). --Samantha Allen Storey

With the original conspiracy plot arc having fallen into a muddle of loose ends, once-hungry lead actors on the verge of big-screen careers and making demands for more time off or shots at writing and directing, and the initial wish list of monsters-of-the-week long exhausted, it's a miracle that by its seventh season The X-Files was still making its airdates, let alone managing something pretty good every other show and something outstanding at least once every four episodes. The season opens with a dreary two-parter ("Sixth Extinction" and "Amor Fati") and winds up with the traditional incomprehensible cliffhanger ("Requiem"), but along the way includes a clutch of episodes that may not match the originality of earlier seasons but still effortlessly equal any other fantasy-horror sci-fi on television.
The highlights: "Hungry," a brain-eating mutant story told from the point of view of a monster who tries to control his appetite by going to eating disorder self-help groups; "The Goldberg Variation," a crime comedy about a weasely little man who has the gift of incredible good luck, which means Wile E. Coyote-style doom for anyone who crosses him; "The Amazing Maleeni," guest-starring Ricky Jay in a rare nonfantastic crime story about a feud between stage magicians that turns out to be a cover for a heist; "X-Cops," a brilliant skit on the TV docusoap Cops with Mulder and Scully caught on camera as they track an apparent werewolf in Los Angeles (season-best acting from David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson); "Theef," a complex revenge drama with gaunt Billy Drago as a hillbilly medicine man stalking a slick doctor; "Brand X," a horror-comic tale of corruption in the tobacco industry; "Hollywood AD" (written and directed by Duchovny), in which Tea Leoni (Duchovny's wife) and Garry Shandling are cast as Scully and Mulder in a crass movie version of a real-life X-file; and "Je Souhaite," a deadpan comedy about a wry, cynical genie at the mercy of trailer-trash masters who haven't an idea what to wish for. --Kim Newman

Platoon put writer-turned-director Oliver Stone on the Hollywood map; it is still his most acclaimed and effective film, probably because it is based on Stone's firsthand experience as an American soldier in Vietnam. Chris (Charlie Sheen) is an infantryman whose loyalty is tested by two superior officers: Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe), a former hippie humanist who really cares about his men (this was a few years before he played Jesus in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ), and Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), a moody, macho soldier who may have gone over to the dark side. The personalities of the two sergeants correspond to their combat drugs of choice--pot for Elias and booze for Barnes. Stone has become known for his sledgehammer visual style, but in this film it seems perfectly appropriate. His violent and disorienting images have a terrifying immediacy, a you-are-there quality that gives you a sense of how things may have felt to an infantryman in the jungles of Vietnam. Platoon won Oscars for best picture and director. --Jim Emerson

The Song of Bernadette Specifications

Jennifer Jones plays the legendary French peasant who claimed to have dialogues with the Virgin Mary at a Lourdes grotto in 1858. The script handles the visitations as an article of truth (Linda Darnell plays the Virgin), which helps move the drama forward, though much of the story concerns the conflicts that arise in the community after Jones is told the grotto contains healing waters. Made by Henry King (The Snows of Kilimanjaro), the film is gorgeous to look at and sensitively directed; and Jones (who won an Oscar for Best Actress) is radiant in the lead. Whatever one's religious persuasion, this is a strikingly handsome Hollywood production to be enjoyed. The film also earned Academy Awards for cinematography and score. --Tom Keogh

It's not really a knock to say that nothing in Tropic Thunder is funnier than its first five minutes, so sly that--especially for people watching in theaters--you don't realize right away they are the opening minutes of the movie. This outrageous comedy begins with a series of fake previews, each introducing one of the main characters in the film-proper (not that there's anything proper about this film) and each bearing the familiar logo of a different motion picture studio: Universal, DreamWorks SKG, et al. Such playing fast and loose with corporate talismans verges on sacrilege, but it's an index of how much le tout Tinseltown endorses the movie as a demented valentine to itself. The premise is that the cast of a would-be "Son of Rambo" movie shooting in some Southeast Asian jungle get into a real shooting war with drug-smuggling montagnards. Don't ask--though the movie does have an answer--why such highly paid, usually ultra-pampered personnel as superhero Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Mozart of fart comedy Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), hip-hop artist Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), and five-time Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus from Aus-try-leeah (Robert Downey Jr.) should be running through the jungle unattended and very vulnerable. It matters only that the real-life cast has a high time kidding their own profession and flexing their comedic muscles. Bonus points go to Stiller for co-writing the script (with Justin Theroux) and directing, and to Downey, brilliant as a white actor surgically turned black actor for his role and utterly committed to staying in character no matter what ("I don't drop character till I done the DVD commentary").
Be warned: The movie, too, is committed--to being an equal-opportunity offender. Its political incorrectness extends not only to Lazarus's black-like-me posturing but also Speedman's recent, Sean Penn–style Oscar bid playing a cognitively challenged farmboy--or, in Lazarus's deathless phrase, "going the full retard." Others in the cast include Steve Coogan as a director out of his depth, Nick Nolte as the Viet-vet novelist whose book inspired the film-within-the-film, Matthew McConaughey as Speedman's sun-blissed agent back home, and Tom Cruise--bald, fat-suited, and profane--as an epically repulsive studio head. Two hours running time is a mite excessive, but otherwise, what's not to like? --Richard T. Jameson

A winning mixture of adventure, slapstick comedy, and friendship, How to Train Your Dragon rivals Kung Fu Panda as the most engaging and satisfying film DreamWorks Animation has produced. Hiccup (voice by Jay Baruchel) is a failure as a Viking: skinny, inquisitive, and inventive, he asks questions and tries out unsuccessful contraptions when he's supposed to be fighting the dragons that attack his village. His father, chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), has pretty much given up on his teenage son and apprenticed him to blacksmith Gobber (Craig Ferguson). Worse, Hiccup knows the village loser hasn't a chance of impressing Astrid (America Ferrera), the girl of his dreams and a formidable dragon fighter in her own right. When one of Hiccup's inventions actually works, he hasn't the heart to kill the young dragon he's brought down. He names it Toothless and befriends it, although he's been taught to fear and loathe dragons. Codirectors and cowriters Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, who made Disney's delightful Lilo and Stitch, provide plenty of action, including vertiginous flying sequences, but they balance the pyrotechnics with moments of genuine warmth that make the viewer root for Hiccup's success. Many DreamWorks films get laughs from sitcom one-liners and topical pop culture references; as the humor in Dragon comes from the characters' personalities, it feels less timely and more timeless. Toothless chases the spot of sunlight reflected off Hiccup's hammer like a giant cat with a laser pointer; Hiccup uses his newly found knowledge (and an icky smoked eel) to defeat two small dragons--and impress the other kids. How to Train Your Dragon will be just as enjoyable 10 or 20 years from now as it is today. Writer-director Sam Raimi's extremely stylized, blood-soaked follow-up to his creepy Evil Dead isn't really a sequel; rather, it's a remake on a better budget. It also isn't really a horror film (though there are plenty of decapitations, zombies, supernatural demons, and gore) as much as it is a hilarious, sophisticated slapstick send-up of the terror genre. Raimi takes every horror convention that exists and exaggerates it with mind-blowing special effects, crossed with mocking Three Stooges humor. The plot alone is a genre cliché right out of any number of horror films. Several teens (including our hero, Ash, played by Bruce Campbell in a manic tour-de-force of physical comedy) visit a broken-down cottage in the woods--miles from civilization--find a copy of the Book of the Dead, and unleash supernatural powers that gut every character in sight. All, that is, except Ash, who takes this very personally and spends much of the of the film getting his head smashed while battling the unseen forces. Raimi uses this bare-bones story as a stage to showcase dazzling special effects and eye-popping visuals, including some of the most spectacular point-of-view Steadicam work ever (done by Peter Deming). Although it went unnoticed in the theaters, the film has since become an influential cult-video favorite, paving the way for over-the-top comic gross-out films like Peter Jackson's Dead Alive. --Dave McCoy

Ben Stiller wrestles with extinct beasts, historical figures, and meddling monkeys in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, the sequel to the popular 2006 special-effects extravaganza. This time, the ancient Egyptian tablet (the one that brings all the exhibits at New York's Museum of Natural History to life at night) is being shipped off to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.--which, as the movie diligently tells us, is the largest museum in the world. Naturally, former museum guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) heads down to rescue it (and, by extension, keep his magical museum friends alive). He ends up fighting with a nasty pharaoh who talks like Boris Karloff (Hank Azaria, The Simpsons) and falling in love with Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams, Enchanted). All the old gang are along for the ride, including Dexter the monkey; much face-slapping and special effects ensue. There aren't many surprises, but Battle of the Smithsonian is cheerful enough to entertain everyone who enjoyed the first movie. Extras include commentaries by the director and the writers, the usual self-congratulatory making-of featurette, deleted scenes that are actually as good as the rest of the movie, an alternate ending, and an entirely pointless second disc about Crystal, the capuchin monkey who plays Dexter (the monkey disc has less than a half-hour of material, including two mediocre games). Managed to catch the second half of this documentary on TV and upon finishing it, I made sure to catch it on the next airing so I could see the whole thing. I was a big fan of the Columbian soccer team and knew almost nothing about their background. I knew Escobar (the footballer) who scored the own-goal in the US World Cup was murdered when he returned to Columbia but that was the extent of my knowledge.

I HIGHLY recommend this documentary to soccer fans as well as anyone interested in Pablo Escobar and the many roles he played in Columbia.

Great movie/documentary, Don't buy this version through Amazon - scrim - Weston, MA, US
I saw the Movie when it came out, and I thought it was great. I was very disappointed to order it through Amazon and receive a DVD-case, a CD with movie logo printed on it. The disk was blank, and ready to be formatted. There was information on the shrink-wrapping saying that it might not play on some computers. Being a blank CD it didn't play any device (DVD, computer). It was a waste of my time to buy a cheaper burn as you go DVD from Amazon. I will buy the movie in another fashion (possibly through a reseller on Amazon) , but I will never purchase a movie from Amazon in this fashion again. Read the fine print, and don't buy it this manner.

Sometimes you see something pass you buy and its just a mirage. Other times you see something and its a miracle in the works. The only thing with miracles is that sometimes, when you close enough, you notice they have a price. and the miracles in this show seem to have a really steep one.

Carnivale begins in the middle of the Dust Bowl, with an old home about to be torn down. A son sits with his mother and says he can ease her pain but, strangely, she calls him the spawn of the Devil and says she'd rather die. She does, too, and after the son sees her buried he also sees something that he can't quite make out - in some ways it seems like an opprotunity and in others it seems like another way to find his time wasted. Regardless, he knows he has nothing to lose and gears up for what becomes a weird and wild ride through the middle of the nothing, encountering blackened miracles and false prophets on his way to something more.
Its really an interesting story.

As far as everything goes, the story does develop slowly and, sometimes, you feel as though you are bbeing left out of something. There are other times when that same piece comes back and brings you into the fold, noting exactly why something happened and exactly how it fits in. The thing that keeps this from hurting the story is good acting and little oddities that seem to plague this place, from a girl who tells fortunes through the voice of a mother only she can hear to even strange variations of odd.
That's what drew me in - the places they stop, the ways things move; everything revolves and evolves until it it becomes the thing you want and more.

for the cost of the product, you really have nothing to lose. You also have another season to go through as well and, when the two meet, all sorts of visions seem to mnaifest. A lot of other people have better comments on this but I can only give you want I think and I think this was done well. From the clothing and the set-up of the time to the people that are utilized and the weird things that seem to be happening, everything works in your favor. The question shouldn't be why you shouuld pass it up; it should be why you would want to.

It features one of television's most colorful casts of characters. They include Sophie (Clea DuVall), who reads fortunes--with her comatose mother's assistance, the vaguely sinister Lodz (Patrick Bauchau), blind absinthe-drinker and mentalist (he can see both the future and the past), and Ruthie (Adrienne Barbeau), snake charmer, strongman's mother, and all-around maternal figure. I loved the series while it was on TV. I have enjoyed watching it again.

We're not in Kansas anymore... - Les - Virginia
It was clear after watching only one episode of Season One that we were in for a different sort of series. It is actually set in 1934 in the middle of America which does include Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and others - during the difficult times of the depression. However, the story line is rich with a mix of good, evil, magic, visions, intrigue, and mystery that are delivered in such a way as to make the abnormal seem normal. After watching an episode you are left wondering what things occurred in the episode that might be clues to the past or future events. It is definitely not your normal series. HBO does it again - gives us something original. I've only watched 3 episodes, yet I imagine the story will hold up for at least this first season. I'm hopeful it will be just as inventive in Season Two.

A Masterwork of Story Arc Episodic Television - Flash - Cleveland, OH USA
There are a small number of TV shows I've seen that have approached true greatness. Two of them, Carnivale and Firefly unfortunately didn't get the chance to fulfill their entire vision. The one show that did, The Wire, did have a full five seasons to tell the entire story. Another show, Lost, although very good, didn't quite measure up to greatness in the end.

I just finished watching both seasons of Carnivale and I can definitely say that the experience was like reading a deep, involved, mysterious novel where the story enfolds at a perfect pace and builds to a satisfying end place. The development of characters is one of the highlights of this show. The characters appear genuine despite the supernatural elements, they are numerous enough and fully developed over the series to keep you interested in all of them, and their interactions are complex and critical to the story. The look and feel of this show is also genuine for the time period with dust storms, dirty fingernails and carnival creepies. Underlying this is a story of epic proportions; the historic battle of good and evil, supernatural powers and mystical beings (avatars). Put it all together and this is one excellent show.

Despite the fact that this series was cut short (it was planned for six seasons), the conclusion is still meaningful and satisfying. Yes. It leaves you wanting more because by the end of season 2, you get it. You understand how awesome this show really is. Oh what could have been!! Why is it that the TV Exec's don't have the patience to let greatness blossom? Let the visionaries (in this case the show's creator, Daniel Knauf) tell the whole story they want to tell.

The movie I am reviewing is called Flowers for Algernon based on the book by Daniel Keyes. Flowers for Algernon is a story about Charlie Gordon, whose life takes a joyous to tragic arc as he grows in intelligence and adjusts to life around him. Algernon was a mouse that had gone through the same operation as Charlie, an experimental surgery that greatly raises their intelligence. The movie follows Charlie as he goes from being mentally challenged to a genius back to being mentally challenged. As the movie proceeds, it makes the audience ponder what makes us the way we are. I think it is a pretty good movie overall.

The special effects and clothing were badly chosen, but then again it was made ten years ago. Algernon looks electronic in some scenes and Charlie's hair looked like a bush. I wouldn't have imagined Miss Kinnian being played by Kelli Williams, but she plays the part well. Matthew Modine gives a performance that endears the viewer to the character. The basic plot was the same in both the short story and the movie. There were a few differences. In the short story Charlie works at a plastic box company and in the movie he works at the bakery. They both show how unfairly mentally challenged people are treated.

The idea of having a man gain and loose intelligence in a slightly romantic way is both sad and awe-inspiring. It is a great representation of the book and is a huge improvement to the previous movie Charly (1968). It was very entertaining and certainly worth watching!

I will admit to being a little leery when a favorite story of mine gets adapted to the screen (be it a movie or TV), and "Flowers for Algernon" is on my top five list of best short stories of all time (the novel is another matter entirely). While I understand that no story survives this transition completely intact or unaltered, this movie should be used as a case study of what not to do when making an adaptation: everything that made the original such a heart-breaking record of Charlie Gordon's rise and fall has been gutted from this script. Charlie is barely sympathetic in this rendition, and Matthew Modine's lackluster performance is just the rancid icing on the tasteless cake. Avoid this one at all costs.

eighth grade pick - Mrs. B -
I am an eighth grade Language Arts teacher, and my class reads "Flowers for Algernon" each year. Our school has a copy of the old video "Charly," but I really don't like it, especially since I have to watch it three times in a day. I took a chance on this new one, never having seen it before showing it in class. It is much more enjoyable. First of all, it is a more modern style of videography (no split screens or long montages). It also has no drug referrences. It does have implicit sexual activity, but it is not violent, like in the old version. My kids all enjoyed this movie. They laughed at different parts, and it was easy for them to identify the characters after having read the short story. I do recommend this video to anyone who enjoyed the story.

If you could go back to 1998 (something that I would give serious consideration to by the way), you would find that the computer generated animated feature film was in its infancy. All that existed prior was Pixar's Toy Story. Suddenly the powers-that-be had insects on their collective minds as the subject for best exploiting the new medium.

In fact a very strong argument could be made that it was these bug flicks of 1998 that firmly cemented a rivalry between DreamWorks and Pixar that is still going strong today some 12-years later.

Interestingly, while Disney/ Pixar's A Bug's Life followed the more traditional path of basically turning a classic family-oriented 2D feature into the 3D domain, Antz actually comes off as an animated incarnation of a classic Woody Allen picture, complete with all of the adult gags that make his work so endearing. Picture the insecurities, the esteem issues, the "what is the meaning of life" angles that make summarize the Woody Allen experience but coupled to a solid children's medium (complete with the nice clean character designs and a well-constructed user-friendly plot).

The story tells of one Z-4195 (Z for short), a neurotic worker ant amidst a family of 5-million strong.

Z is in therapy because he's an individual in a colony where conformity is not only desirable, but also mandatory for daily survival. One night, while at a bar, he dances with the incognito Princess Bala and immediately becomes obsessed with her.

After much scheming, he ends up presenting a plan to his soldier-class ant friend Weaver for a day. Things go terribly wrong, however, when the evil General Mandible declares war on a nearby termite colony and poor Z finds himself in the heat of battle.

Truth be told, Antz makes very valid use of the ideal that hindsight is often much clearer. Now that computer-generated features are no longer in their infancy, it's clear that Antz was actually grittier and more subtly mature than most of the animated films of recent years. The language is a little bit sharper (a few cusses), there are some intense visuals (a battle scene that looks as if it were transplanted directly from 1997's Starship Troopers, the dying decapitated head of one of Z's friends), and a little bit of nastiness that could make an adult squirm (a gondola ride through a rotting fish head, some bugs eating a chunk of feces and so on).

Make no mistake, these aren't deterrents to the "fun for all ages" aspect of the film so much as they are interesting little signs of the whole genre's evolution toward kid-friendliness. Many of these gags simply wouldn't fly today even in a DreamWorks picture, which, I typically consider to be the most adult of the current animation studios.

In all Antz is quite enjoyable on many levels and in my opinion, superior to the generally considered impeccable, A Bug's Life. There is enough cuteness and morality to keep the kiddies involved but the humor is such that adults may even enjoy it more than the youngsters. How often can that be said about an animated film, really?

The computer animation isn't exactly realistic but feels as solid and contoured as puppet animation with the smoothness and slickness of traditional cel cartoons, and the character designs and animation offer a marvelous range of expressions. It starts off with a stuttering monologue by Woody Allen's character in a psychiatrist's office -- it was boring & clichéd. Fast forward 10 minutes to Sylvester Stallone's character saying "what are you b*tchin about?" *gasp* goes me....what on earth? But fortunately my child had zero interest and wasn't watching. I'm kicking myself for not paying attention to the reviews by others that mentioned the cursing -- I just saw an animated PG flick and bought it :-(

This is a great artistic documentary on one aspect of surfing. I liked THE ENDLESS SUMMER better, though. For those of us who never have, and never will, surf, we expect to get some enjoyment out of a film that takes us there . . . that helps us feel what it might be like to be on the waves. Big wave surfing is more active and demanding than most other forms and the movie expresses well the hyperactive side of that. My only complaint is that the camera angles flash and dart so much that the viewer rarely gets the meditative feeling that must also come along with surfing, and that is as deeply addicting as the risk-taking side of the sport. Many action movies now dart and flash too much, and don't allow the viewer to get into the moment along with the player/actor. When I watch a surfing movie, I want to know what it feels like to ride those waves for a while . . . The camera mode doesn't let us go beyond passive observer here. ENDLESS SUMMER does a better job. That's the only reason for the missing star, because otherwise, the music, documentary, and film of the awesome waves were all spectacular!

Great wave action, and a whole lot more - Grant Kennedy -
The focus is on the three people who have had the biggest impact on big wave surfing. It explores the heroism, along with the fears and failures, that come with tackling something really huge and formidable. The director does an impressive job getting people to tell their story in a very personal way. The result is a series of stories about multi-faceted people rather than two-dimensional stereotypes. The movie includes historical photos, cool drawings, great music, and a few stories you can relate to if you've done any surfing. These guys have done things most of us will never get a chance to do, but so many of the stories told ring true and can be generalized to our collective human experience.

If you watch the special feature about The Making of Riding Giants, it gives an idea of how this came about organically through an interview for another project. It also gives insight into just how much time and labor is required to make a movie as interesting to watch as Riding Giants.

Hancock is a VERY different take on the super hero concept. Hancock is a mysterious and unhappy man with super powers. When he gets involved in apprehending criminals, he often causes more damage and problems than he solves.

A PR man, whose life he saves, takes Hancock under his wing to help him become a responsible hero, but there are more surprises on the way.

This is a thoughtful and very unique superhero film, and also in most respects very cool. It goes in directions you'll never expect, but not at the expense of leaving glaring plot holes. Will Smith gives his normal top notch performance, and the supporting cast is great.

Laughs, thrills, surprises, and an interesting story. What more do you want from a movie?

Hancock turns the standard superhero movie inside-out: The title character (Will Smith) can fly, has superstrength, and is invulnerable, but he's also a sloppy, alcoholic jerk who causes millions of dollars in property damage whenever he bothers to fight crime. When he saves the life of a public-relations agent named Ray (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development), Ray decides to improve Hancock's image--starting by having Hancock surrender himself to the authorities and go to prison for his lawless behavior. The idea is that once he's in prison, the crime rate will go up, and people will start to realize Hancock might be of value after all. This is only the first act of Hancock--from there, the movie takes several clever turns that shouldn't be revealed. Hancock isn't a great movie (among other things, director Peter Berg overuses close-ups with a hand-held camera to a degree that may cause motion sickness), but it is an extremely entertaining one. The script, which holds together far better than most superhero movies, has a propulsive plot, good dialogue, some compassion for its characters, and even an actual idea or two. The spectacular action at least gestures towards obeying the laws of physics, which actually makes the special effects more vivid. The three leads (Smith, Bateman, and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife, Mary) deftly balance the movie's mixture of comedy, action, and drama. All in all, a smart subversive twist on a genre that all too often takes itself all too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

Well, when I saw that I could buy a new copy of Hancock, I just went for it. The product came in good time, well packaged, and in wonderful condition.

You Won't Believe A Man Could Fly - Paul D. - Long Island, NY
OK, Will Smith is a fine actor, and even makes Hancock into somewaht of a real, sympathetic character...but this movie is simply dreadful. A lame concept, with nowhere to go. Storywise, Hancock is yet another in the long series of now utterly boring tales of what it would be like if superpowered beings really did walk the earth; this concept started back in the 1980's with The Watchmen, Dark Knight, Concrete, Marshall Law and Miracle Man comics, the trend continued for a long time in comics and was followed up by such movies as the awful "Unbreakable", and the merely decent "The Incredibles". Filmmakingwise, this is simply an excuse for terrific computerized special effects, and a high concept easy for marketing, no more. For a while, I thought that "Hancock" might be at least a modern day, jazzed up version of "The Bishop's Wife", with it's wonderful love triangle dynamics between a man of the cloth (David Niven), and an Angel on Earth (Cary Grant), vying subtly, and not-so-subtly for the affections of Loretta Young. Not so. Once the set up of a diseffected, alcoholic loner, with a good heart, bad manners...and superpowers is established, the writers simply ran out of steam. Potentially somewhat intersting plotlines including Hancock spending time in jail (for unanswered lawsuits and damages), or the manipulation of public relations in the age of super mass media (which was handled quite well in the Jack Lemmon/Judy Holliday movie "It Should Happen To You" 1954) are given short shrift. Very much like "Unbreakable", there's no real payoff, and the backstory never developed in a proper manner, almost as if the creators couldn't be bothered with details. Oh, there's also a moronic bloodbath as a climax, and a truly silly, sappy, green Hollywood capper. The superhero effects make the once sterling effects from the 1978 "Superman" look truly prehistoric, but the charm, wit, excitement, and sense of wonder of that first major, big budget superhero blockbuster are utterly absent here. Even the unnecessary and useless "Underdog" live action movie might have been better than this. Hollywood has really forgotten how to make entertaining movies, even mindless ones!

Movies entertain us. Movies captivate us. Movies appeal to us. But, most of all, movies inspire us. Rocky inspired us to fight for our dreams (and to take the stairs instead of the elevator). Glory inspired us to fight for what's right. The Diary of Anne Frank inspired us to fight for humanity. ET inspired us to believe beyond what we can see. And, Shawshank Redemption, of course, inspired us to escape from prison.
Then there are business movies. These movies may bore some of us (those of us who don't even like to work much less use it as a form of entertainment), but others find these the most inspiring of films. This article lists the best movies for people who believe that business is always a worthy production.
Boiler Room: A view into the underworld of sketchy brokerage forms, Boiler Room features a college student drop-out used to being on the brink of seediness. After running an illegal casino, he is hired by JT Marlin, a firm that creates a false demand by skyrocketing the price of shares for companies that don't exist.. The main character Seth, played by Giovanni Ribisi, is placed in the middle when the FBI uses his father, a judge, against him. Seth is then forced to work with the FBI to uncover the fallacy employing him.
The characters in the story aren't noble or moral - as their main goal is to scam people out of money - but, from a business perspective, they are good at wheeling and dealing. The monologues in the conference room and the scenes where they sell can surely inspire just about any businessman or women, particularly salespeople; it can inspire them not only to excel at their art, but to leave companies like JT Marlin for the fishes.
Working Girl: Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and recipient of one for Best Song, Working Girl tells the tale of a likeable but unconfident secretary named Tess McGill, played by Melanie Griffith, working for Katharine Parker, a rude, condescending boss, played by Sigourney Weaver. When Katharine breaks her leg, Tess assumes her identity. Not only is she competent at Katharine's job, but she is better at it than her employer. A movie where it is beyond easy to root for the underdog, this film's marketing contained the tagline, "For anyone who's ever won. For anyone who's ever lost. And for everyone who's still in there trying." Really, who among us can't relate to that?
Jerry Maguire: Admit it, this movie had you at hello. One of Tom Cruise's last great films before aliens took control of his mind, Jerry Maguire features Tom as, well, Jerry Maguire, a sports agent with a conscience. After his firm dumps him ("who's coming with me?") he finds himself with one lone client, Rod Tidwell, played by a scene-stealing Cuba Gooding, Jr.
Many people found this movie appealing because of the romantic subplot (not to mention an adorable little boy), but from a business perspective, it was also wonderful, displaying both the greed of an industry and the heart of those aiming to make it right. "The Show Me the Money," phrase helped cement this moving into cinematic history as it is remembered as one of the greatest quotes of all time.
Glengarry Glen Ross: Based on the 1984 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play, Glengarry Glen Ross shows 48 hours in the lives of four real estate agents who are drowning in desperation. Filled with a cast of A Plus-listers, this movie stars Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin and Jonathan Pryce. Diving into the evils of greed and the acts people will perform when hopelessness ensues, this film depicts lies, bribes, threats, thievery, and a whole lot of cussing. The title is generated from two properties discussed in the movie, the Glengarry Highlands and the Glen Ross Farms. This movie not only shows how easily the tide of business can turn, but it also shows how easy the tide can spin out of control, drowning those who fall beneath it.
Wall Street: With a self explanatory title, this movie features Bud Fox, played by a young Charlie Sheen, as a go-getter hell bent on rising to the top. He plans to get there by associating himself with corporate big wig Gordon Gekko, played by Michael Douglas.. Bud soon learns that the secret to Gordon's success is - say it with me Martha Stewart - insider trading. He first isn't really turned off by this, as he quickly grows rich and famous, but when Gordon decides to do a corporate raid on the company of Bud's father, mixed emotions surface. Bud decides, in the end, to use the values his hardworking, blue collar father taught him. Though he gets indicted, it also appears that Gordon is going down with him. However, the fate of Gordon, in the end, is left up to the imagination.
Some business movies are bad, some are good, and some hit the nail right on the head (Office Space, anyone?). As with any topic, business movies can be poor, wonderful, or somewhere in between. In the end, they are unique cinematic features, if for no other reason than to remind us that there is no business like show business. At least no business I know.

3/06: Overboard is a fairly average film while portraying egregious messages. The usual convention is that, in the end, Dean Proffitt, played by Kurt Russell, would have been arrested for kidnapping and other more serious offenses. So, I'll have to suspend my disbelief this time. The film is more of a drama than a comedy, and Overboard isn't too bad in its pacing as it flows nicely. There isn't anything wrong with acting, but there is a lot wrong with the poorly attempted gag jokes throughout the film. Cutting them out, Overboard would simply have been better. The movie wasn't that funny as I hoped it would be, but more or less, I enjoyed Overboard to a certain extent.

I was very pleased to see how much Christian culture was included in this film: Arthur (Sean Connery) prayed frequently, particularly in his period of loss when Gwen had been kidnapped, and there was the frequent prayerfulness even at the round table. There was the presence of respectable clergy, there were small churches and a great cathedral with a wonderful crucifix of Our Lord and other sacred statuary (The chapels were typically burned by the anti-christian elements though obviously not with the contempt of the story-writer, contempt so often in the heart of certain iconoclast, so called "artists" of our time). It stands as a Christian alternative, indeed, an "answer" to that anti-Christian work, The Mists of Avalon, which - though a well done production starring the lovely Julianna Margulies - in the end distorts or paganizes the Catholic devotion to Mary, and the novel itself serves an anti-Christian, sacrilege-the-sacred and life itself agenda. I know, TMOA was produced after FK, but the latter still stands out as a film "redeeming" Arthurian lore and Gwenivere as well. The battles had to be bloody to be genuine and the Bible is full of that, and so First Knight was First Class, edifying, even educational, entertainment!

I purchased this movie for my handicapped daughter. She loves Richard Gere and has already watched this movie twice since she got it about 3 weeks ago. This movie is a slightly different version of the story of Arthur, Lancelot and Guinevere. It has a lot of action scenes and a satisfying love story.

still with the American accent! The bad guys, especially in the "black castle" rescue scenes, make one think of a sci-fi/ darthvader rehash. Too bad, because Sean Connery and Julia Ormond have a believable chemistry and they keep soldiering on,in spite of the script. They almost pull the film off.

In the end, the movie is so uneven that all the references to Camelot, Roundtable and Excaliber just made me think of other, better films on the subject. I suggest The Mists of Avalon, or Excaliber (with a young Helen Miren doing quite unlikely stuff, beautifully!) Both movies are more respectful of your imagination and intelligence than is First Knight.

Inglourious Basterds (2009) - Pitt plays a southern-fried, Nazi-killing soldier in this WWII epic from director Quentin Tarantino. He's way over the top, but that's perfectly in keeping with Tarantino's bloody, and often darkly comical, piece of revisionist history.
12 Monkeys (1995) - Bruce Willis stars as a convict who volunteers to travel back through time and save the planet from a lethal viral outbreak. When he does so, he meets the manic Jeffrey Goines in an insane asylum, and the young man becomes his primary suspect for who released the virus in the first place.
The Mexican (2001) - Jerry Welbach is a chronic screw-up. Forced to run errands for the mob after accidentally sending their boss to prison, Jerry's final mission is to travel to Mexico and locate a legendary antique gun. Things don't go as planned, however, and his nagging girlfriend (Julia Roberts) is soon drawn into events.
Kalifornia (1993) - Brian Kessler (David Duchovny) is writing a book about serial killers. Along with his girlfriend (Michelle Forbes), he decides to drive from Pittsburgh to California and document famous murder sites along the way. In order to save money on gas, he advertises for a ride-share. Imagine his surprise when honest-to-goodness serial killer Early Grayce (Pitt) answers his ad.
Snatch (2000) - Director guy Ritchie takes a look at illegal boxing in the UK, along with a number of other criminal pursuits. Pitt plays Mickey O'Neil, an Irish gypsy who also happens to be a bare-knuckle boxing champion. When he nearly kills the boxer managed by Turkish (Jason Statham), he agrees to fill in during an upcoming bout hosted by the crime kingpin Brick Top (Alan Ford). Meanwhile, a whole host of colorful criminals search for a stolen 84-carat diamond.
Fight Club (1999) - Edward Norton is an unnamed, disillusioned young man searching for meaning in his life. He finds it when he meets Tyler Durden (Pitt), an eccentric soap-maker who despises consumerism and all it stands for. Together, they start an underground fight club where men can discover themselves, and Tyler soon focuses his energy in a new, more destructive direction. Helena Bonham Carter co-stars.
Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Based on the novel by Anne Rice, Interview casts Brad Pitt opposite Tom Cruise. Pitt plays Louis, a sensitive vampire who was turned in 1791 by the manipulative and often callous Lestat (Cruise). As the two immortals travel the world, they fight, feed, and create a monstrous "daughter" (played by a young Kirsten Dunst). Also starring Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, and Stephen Rea.
Troy (2004) - As the legendary Trojan War commences, heroes on both sides prepare to engage in a life or death struggle. Pitt plays Achilles, the world's greatest warrior.
Seven Years in Tibet (1997) - The real-life story of an Austrian mountaineer (Pitt) who travels to Tibet and winds up becoming a friend and tutor to the Dalai Lama. Due to the content of the film, Pitt was banned by the Chinese government from ever entering their country.
Seven (1995) - Set in a city where it always rains, Seven focuses on the brutal crimes committed by a serial killer looking to punish those guilty of the seven deadly sins. Det. Mills (Pitt) and Det. Somerset (Morgan Freeman) are the dedicated cops on his trail. Filled with twists and turns, the film is deftly directed by David Fincher.
Here's hoping you enjoyed my list of Brad Pitt movies. While fans may be reminded of some of their favorite cinematic moments, it's my hope that non-fans will put aside their preconceived notions and give at least one of the movies listed above a try. If they do, I'm confident that they'll come away a believer.

For The Bible Tells Me So Best Review

I had the opportunity to see this film at my church as part of a new companion study that's just been released, and I want to say how much both have helped me in my understanding of this issue. The class was at my Methodist church here in Nashville, and I joined it because I confess that, despite all the controversies surrounding this issue -- gay marriage, gays in the military, etc. -- I really hadn't gone beyond a surface understanding of the scripture. Mostly, I have been upset by how much this issue has divided our church, and I haven't been sure how to feel about it.

We watched the film the first week of the class. More than anything, I think it took me beyond the word "issue" and really opened my eyes to the human suffering that has been caused by our Christian tradition. I have no doubt that certain Christian practices are in place with the intent of upholding the Word of God. But how can God not be compassionate amid the pain endured by the families in this film?

God calls each of us to undertake a faith journey with an openness to the Holy Spirit, and the film definitely showed me the Holy Spirit was at work, particularly in the stories of Gene Robinson, the woman who lost her daughter to suicide, and the Minnesota couple with the gay son. Watching this film, I saw how these people changed their hearts not necessarily because they wanted to (after all, it's a lot easier to stick with the status quo), but because they were compelled to only after great thought and prayer and study. Literally, soul-searching.

After watching the film, I yearned for a similar experience, and I must say, in the next six weeks I found it through the study. It's called "This I Know," and each of the six lessons is written by a different author. The two that really caught my attention are Brian McLaren and Marcus Borg. McLaren is big in evangelical circles and he's written several influential books. (My church did a Sunday school class series on his "Everything Must Change.") Borg has certainly made a national name as an authority of Christ's teachings.

Each lesson is a step in a journey of both your mind and your heart. For me, the study was able to fill in some of the gaps the film left, particularly in the depth of scriptural understanding. Not to knock the film, but there's only so much you can cover in that time frame. There was a lesson by a national expert on the Apostle Paul, who did a great job of introducing me to the context of his writings. I also came to understand why the beliefs about sin and homosexuality have been kept going through the centuries. The lesson that most blew me away was written by a devout Mennonite who made a complete 180 in her beliefs. The last chapter, which is Borg's, is all about putting Christ at the center of our understanding. Our class did include a couple members who are gay, and being face to face with their pain and faith struggle also really made an impact on me.

You can find the study at its own website, [...]. I highly recommend both together, especially if your church is looking for a "safe" way to get into the topic. There's no doubt that the film and the study are trying to present a particular viewpoint, but both do so with great thoughtfulness and the authority to back it up. In other words, I never felt belittled or beaten over the head -- as I would by the "death to fags" protesters in the film! I came away from the whole experience feeling like I truly took my own journey and came to my own conclusions, and I'm now trying to get more Sunday school classes at my church to offer it. This is just the sort of thing I think we all need to make our peace with this issue once and for all.

This DVD succinctly points out that those who take the Bible as the absolute word of God are largely responsible for the fear and hatred of homosexuals. They interpret the Bible literally, refusing to understand or even acknowledge that it was written by man, for man, and that if they take the passages regarding homosexuality literally they are being hypocritical -- would they stone their daughter to death if she was not a virgin before marriage or would they sell her into slavery, for instance? -- two things that the Bible instructs them to do. In other words, these literalists pick out what they agree with and ignore that which they do not agree with. If they love God so much that they want to follow what they interpret as His absolute word then whatever happened to love thy neighbor as thyself? Don't they understand that God made man and that God would never have made an entire group of people and put them on this earth for the sole purpose of being targets for discrimination and hatred? I wish this DVD could be aired publicly, on a humongous screen and at high volume, at every anti-Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender(GLBT)demonstration. It would expose the haters for what they really are -- hypocrites.

Excellent Documentary - S. Wilder - MN
This documentary covers so many issues surrounding homosexuality, from the historical contexts in which the Bible was written, to the geographic contexts, to semantics, and finally to recent developments in the biological research of homosexuality. Its major premise brings one to the firm understanding that the Bible is being used by many (for profit through fear) to do just the opposite of what God and Jesus would ever have wanted. These people (including many very well-known types that make millions off of their followers) "use" the Bible to erroneously spread their fabricated messages, and in turn, help to create a world of injustice. I would highly recommend this documentary and just maybe more people will be stirred to action to defeat the terrorizing tactics of the homophobics. Unfortunately, it may take a tragic event (like experienced by one mother in the video) before some people can have their their minds finally opened to truth and justice.

This video compares in investigative quality to Dateline. It includes childhood videos of Bishop Robinson as well as later interviews with him, his parents, his ex-wife and daughters. There is a segment of an African-American family where a daughter is lesbian; her father is a minister and never accepted that part of her while her mother did but he loved his daughter and did not shun her. Another segment was a mother who was influenced by Rev. Dobson's teaching on homosexuality. She constantly railed on her daughter to change and the daughter eventually committed suicide. The mother and another couple wwent to a Dobson convention to confront him and were arrested on the spot. There are comments by clergy in high & professors in highplaces who explain the Bible. A very powerful presentation.

Bollywood Movies have been an absolute attraction for cinema lovers not just in India but all around the globe and the success of these movies can be seen at the box office reports or even at the international film awards like Oscars; where a Bollywood movie won the best movie of the year. With near around 100 mainstream Bollywood movies released in year 2009, it was quite a treat for the movie junkies. With comparison to past year, in 2009 most of the movies did well at the box office, few of which are listed in order of total grossing.
1) 3 Idiots - A movie by Rajkumar Hirani featuring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi as Idiots and Kareena Kapoor as the love of character Phunshuk Wangdu. The story is inspired by one of the bestselling novels "Fivepoint Someone" by Chetan Bhagat and later landed in controversy for not providing enough credit to the author. The movie is a story about 3 engineering students who come close and share a strong bond during their stay at the hostel. After graduating they split apart and are not to be traced; however with the help of another character "Chatur" who plays a comic in the movie; the three unite but only after multiple twists and secrets unfolding.
The movie is hilarious and touchy at the same time, credit of which goes to the modified script from the novel. All the actors and characters have done justice to the role and the end product is simply superb! A must watch for all the FANs. The movie is to be officially released on youtube and will be the first Bollywood movie which can be legally downloaded for free.
2) Wanted - A movie by dancing sensation Prabhu Deva featuring Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia, The movie is a remake of a Telegu movie Pokkiri which was a super hit down south. The movie has a very small script and few peppy songs, it is a story of a gangster falling in love with a pretty girl Jhanvi (Played by Ayesha).
Drama enriches when the secret is unfold that Salama is actually a Police inspector and not a notorious gangster. The movie can be termed the best special effect supported action movie of all time in Bollywood and sets a good platform for future action movies to be. Wanted has grossed more tha 200 Crs and still looks good to make many by sale of CDs and special screenings.
3) Love Aaj Kal - A movie by Hou Hsiao-Hsien featuring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone is a movie based on values of love and relationship in the modern world. Throughout the movie there is a constant comparison of love in times; with flashback of love life in yester years and the modern day.
Saif and Deepika are in a love kind of relationship but fail to realize/accept it and do not want to commit as they don't want to tie each other with terms like "love" or marriage. With different events unfolding and a country wide separation makes both of them realize the bond they share and want it back. Saif takes the first few steps and fails as Deepika is all set to marry someone who seems to be perfect match for her although she is not sure about the love part. After marriage Deepika reliazes that she has made a big mistake and wants to go back to Saif with humble consent from her husband.
However Deepika fails to convey her message to Saif and after multiple twists and many years they get in touch with each other just to realize that love had never changed for them and love is something which grows stronger with time and never fades away.
4) Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani - A movie by Rajkumar Santoshi featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif and a special appearance by Salman Khan. The story is about a worthless guy falling in love with girl who in turn loves someone else. Drama unfolds when the girls parent want her to get her married to anoter guy without her wish and Ranbir Kapoor who is in ove with her helps her run away with the guy she loves, although the guy never shows up and Ranbir and Katrina meet again. It is a typical Bollywood movie with peppy numbers, funny gags, hilarious events and lot of sentiments. Katrina Kaif has done an "ok" job in movie as compared to Ranbir Kapoor around whom the entire movie script is built.
5) New York - A Movie by Kabir Khan featuring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh, and Irrfan Khan Is a story of three Indians who got affected by the events folding after 9/11. John Abraham plays a role of a Muslim who is jailed and tortured after being a suspect in the 9/11 case, along with 1500 others. After six months or brutal torture he is found innocent and released but that has left scar in his memories and he starts a real terror organization to take revenge of been assaulted devoid of a reason. Neil Mukesh plays a comprehensive part in the movie and helps to get John back on track and give away all the feelings of avenges.

These movies should not be missed by any Bollywood fans and are a must watch. Apart from these there were few more movies which should be of interest. Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown Best Review

I am not someone who enjoys yoga. I like feeling like I've *worked* after a workout and yoga never gave me that feeling - even with the Biggest Loser's 'Weight Loss Yoga'. So I was skeptical when Jillian Michaels released a yoga DVD, but willing to give it a shot. To my surprise, I absolutely love this DVD. It definitely makes you feel like you're working, there's tons of room for progression and self-improvement (and some moves, admittedly, I will probably never master the advanced version of), yet it's also got a nice flow to it that doesn't drag on but makes the workout feel less like work, and more like fun.

There are two levels on this DVD, but both of them are relatively comparable. The second level is more challenging in terms of the advanced poses and bonus moves, but after a week or two on Level 1 (depending on your fitness level) you should easily be able to alternate between levels 1 and 2. Each level has a warm-up and cool down, with three circuits of training. Each circuit consists of three moves that are repeated (partially to compensate for switching out arms / legs on certain moves). Between each circuit you also do a 'bonus move' of some sort - in Level 1 it's 'sun salutations', and in Level 2 it's a series of quite challenging balance poses.

For someone who's unfamiliar with Jillian Michaels and is expecting a 'love your body and breathe in relaxing breaths' DVD, this is not the yoga workout for you. Jillian combines cardio and movement into each pose before getting you to hold 'power poses' for fifteen seconds to contract the muscles that have just been active. Therefore, it's even more intense than a typical Yoga Flow workout - she expects you to get moving, get your heart rate up, and focus on breathing more to support your muscles than to reach a zen place. That being said, if you're like me and someone who never really 'got' yoga, this DVD will be a welcome change of pace that combines Jillian's tough as nails body weight training with some moves to increase your flexibility, and also change up your routine in general. I find when I don't feel like slugging it out with some hand weights, Yoga Meltdown is a nice variation that doesn't bring on that occasional feeling of dread I get when I eyeball my fitness gear.

On the flip side for those who are already big Jillian fans, I'm happy to say her more professional and upbeat persona from her personal line of DVDs is the host here, not her battle axe Biggest Loser trainer self. It's a tiny bit amusing to see Jillian use the odd bit of yoga speak, and she does break out of it during the cooldown by making quips about how she'll "speak English now" and that she thought she'd hate yoga, until she found a way that made it work for her - and her devotees. She shows a bit of humanity throughout by showcasing how tough some of the poses really are, especially given she's made it very clear she's not very flexible.

I have to say this is one of my favourite workout DVDs these days. I love that you don't need any equipment other than your own body, and I feel there is a good balance of progression between the beginner and advanced versions of each move, and between each level. It's the perfect thing to add to my workout DVD mix and I'm happy I own it!

Not her best - Gradgirl - new york city
I have all Jillian's dvds. I really believe her strengths are in "traditional" exercise work. I love all the others- 30 day shred and shred it with weights are my favorites, this however I think is the weakest in her lineup. She tries to make it more of a cardio workout (like hot yoga maybe?).

It just comes across as chaotic- no real order. It's just ok

I do this workout on the weekends and do cardio work during the week. I like to keep active all the time. This workout is intense at time. It took a couple weekends of Level 1 and then I moved to Level 2 and I'm definitely impressed. The work you do with your core was just what I was looking for in order to get those flat abs!

I am not experienced with yoga, and was not looking for a traditional yoga DVD, so the reviews that complain that it's not "real" yoga didn't put me off. I love JM's other videos so gave this one a try. I was more looking for something different to do on days when I want something low impact and shorter. This fits the bill very well! I did level 1 and found it very challenging. Some of those poses are HARD, even doing it with the beginner modifications. I thought I was in decent shape! I think this will really help my core strength and balance. As I am not that familiar with yoga and the terminology, a tutorial with some explanations of the different poses would have been helpful. I did watch it all the way through before trying it so that did help some. I still found myself craning my neck to see the TV to make sure I was in the right position. While I wasn't dripping with sweat I still definitely felt like I got a good workout.

My muscles definitely were sore the next day, especially my triceps, shoulders, and quads. Those Chataranga (sp?) pushups are killer! Tons of plank work in level 1 so your abs really get a workout.

The unrated version shows more scenes of their home life and more long slow shots of Angelina Jolie which really show how amazing looking she is. I didn't like the theatrical release version at all. It seemed like a rushed collection of action sequences and smarmy one-liners. I didn't receive the second disc that comes with the unrated set so I can't comment on it. If you want a slightly slower version and you really want to lock onto Angelina Jolie's face, then this version is the one for you.

I think this is a great movie. Just FYI, the Blu-ray only contains the theatrical release and not the uncut/unrated version that all these other reviews are describing. I kind of think it's ridiculous that both versions were not included in this Blu-ray.

Ho Hum, especially for martial artists & gun enthusiasts - S. Dee -
Some spots of witty dialog save this movie. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of fighting arts will find this fight fantasy impossible to swallow. Angelina is so emaciated she looks absolutely unconvincing even throwing a punch. The usual trailer-load of bodies is left behind but Brangelina, of course, is barely scathed. With ever increasing numbers of Americans growing in gun knowledge by owning and training with guns, Hollywood might do well to introduce an ounce of realism into escapist action films. The last fight sequence was so ridiculous, what measured enjoyment I had from the beginning of the film was completely lost. A weak plot and a slightly disturbing view of marriage all add up to a so-so rental.

This film is about a charming silly bank robber who gets thrown in jail only to con a break out and run into a beautiful federal officer who he has to manhandle in order to get away. They have an intimate teet a teet? in the trunk of the car. It is chemistry with these two who are on the opposite sides of the law. It has a bit of a cat and mouse feel but they finally come together and let their guards down in order to make sexual banter turn real. They want to be in denial for just a little while before they have to return back to their roles. She doesnt sacrifice her job responsibility but the movie leaves it open for the two of them somewhere down the road. The things I liked about this film, I love Steven Sodenberg's films, this has a hipness and a creative indie feel to it. Lopez and Clooney can make it happen on the screen. I like her character she is tough and feminine. Her relationship with her father was able to be felt and even desired. Her dad really loved and adored her. She had a close intimate relationship with him. I liked the beautiful motel, the beautiful views and the glow of the lamps in the bar. Her job seemed fun and it felt easy and not scar the way she dealt with criminals. It was too funny watching her and Glenn's interactions. Her prettiness and makeup was something that I liked. Adele's job as a magician assistant was kinda fun and she seemed to stand out even if only in a short scene. I like Catherine Keener, she gives her character a color and creative feel. The actor who plays Glenn I like, I think he is a good with comedy. The two actors driving in Florida, brought back the memories of all the lush plants and trees. They were just in life and in moment which was cool, to hard to explain that here, would have liked this, again hard to explain. I liked the togetherness that her and her father shared in the neat restaurant with the marina. The introspectiveness of her being alone and than Jack showing up charging the scene with seduction of words and charged electriciy. The film is good, not Sodenbergs best but worth viewing for certain.

Out of Sight was one of the best movies of 1998, but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Making his best film since 1989's sex, lies, and videotape, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard's novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard's Get Shorty. The movie's a prime showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who's escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Out Of Sight isn't a completely bad film. The problem is, it isn't a very good film either. I felt the entire plot, acting, and directing were done strictly by the numbers, that is, by the book and by the formula. There was no passion in its creation, no creative spark, no joy. Very formulaic for a crime film, with the romantic part thrown in (no comedy to speak of, so I can't say it was a romantic comedy with a crime element).

Clooney's acting is barely passable - he's just being his usual self-charmed character, and says all of his lines like he's in love with himself. Jennifer Lopez was okay as a detective, she's almost believable as a cop. Steve Zahn was the only real treat in this otherwise tired, worn-out film. Steve plays a loser criminal who leads Clooney to the "big score" of uncut diamonds.

Boring. Cliche. Old school. Tired formula even when it was a new film. I only watched the film because it received some great reviews, but until the very, very, end, I kept wondering "when is it going to get good?".

More of a Silly Comedy/Romance - Loyd E. Eskildson - Phoenix, AZ.
Florida bank robber Jack Folely (George Clooney) plays a genteel game of cat-and-mouse with Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez) a stunning federal marshal he meets in the trunk of a getaway car. The Director is Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) who inserts freeze-frames, time-shifting, as well as a hip jazzy-soul music soundtrack.

The movie is enjoyable and not too bloody or gory. It focuses more on the romance between Jack and Karen as they go through the cops and robbers chase. More than a bit silly.

Seems Like Old Times Best Review

This is a 1980 screwball comedy about a fugitive (Chevy Chase) who hides out on the property of his ex (Goldie Hawn) and her unknowing D.A. husband (Charles Grodin). I thought I wouldn't like it. Chevy Chase irritates me and I didn't much care for Foul Play, another comedy with the exact same leads. In that one, chase and Goldie were running around trying to prevent someone from shooting the Pope. They were clearly brought together again to replicate that "success", but this movie is alright.

I think it's because Chase doesn't really have a character. He's just a walking tornado of chaos which people have to react to. Goldie Hawn traded him in for the successful-if-bland attorney, but it's hinted she belongs with Chevy after all since she's one banana short of a fruit salad, herself. Grodin does his usual schtick of whining and grumbling. It's a simple formula but funny. And I'm a crabby individual, so if this movie made me smile, it should have you rolling on the floor.

I kind of have a fondness for electric 70s cheese. So naturally Marvin Hamlisch in my rolodex of awesome.

The craziness of their everyday lives becomes even more ridiculous when ex-husband Chevy Chase is framed for a bank robbery and seeks refuge with the woman he could never get over. Hawn hides the love of her life under her husband's nose as Chase tries to clear his name. Hawn tries to protect him and Grodin just tries to keep from going insane. A slapstick romance that's very often hit-and-miss, the dialogue saves this comic farce and provides wonderful moments between the three stars. Jockonarock! - Ramsey Tupper - Raven's Foot - R(3,3,3) = 17, of course...
Shaun Connelly, a funny scotsman, plays the acting double for the stuntman doing his characters stunts in this very poor quality and dull film. It limps along from dreary dialogue heavy scene to a smattering of poorly handled and badly edited 'action scenes' and some explosions.

The story, if you can stretch this back of cig packet plot to such a description, focuses on an old soldier, played badly by Eddie Harris, trying to fudge a bit of compensation for soldiers he probably killed in a friendly fire incident and some other stuff too.

His plan is to steal a load of anal love toys filled with predator (from Predator, the film and its superior sequels) blood. As the jungle girl, Anna, said in Predator, 'It's blood was on the leebs!'. The end of that film saw the predator blood blow up in nuclear bomb type explode flame bang! These anal beads that are in The Rock are just as dangerous as some nitrogycerol when it is dropped or thrown. Very volatile.

However, the acting and plot holes ruin any kind of adventure or excitement for the viewer. As if anal beads filled with predator blood are an effective plot device to cause excitement with today's clever plots. Nick Cage is unusually bad in this film, worse than Mr 'too old' Connelly, a funny scotsman, whose performance was as bad as the one he did in Highlander, another chronically bad piece of bum cake. The rock is not good. Even looking just as silly on a blueray with the added oomph you expect but are still not as happy about but a bit sharper. Bad film and other good things on the disc too.

I have given this film 2 stars as I hadn't seen it all the way through.

According to Sony, more than 20 million units of PSP has been sold worldwide already. There are a lot of PSP users who are hungry for more content to put on their PSP and the easiest way is by downloading movies onto PSP from the internet.
The only problem is the PSP can only play MP4 videos while most movies and videos found on the internet are in WMV, AVI or DIVX video format.
Therefore, you will need a PSP video converter to convert the videos to be compatible with the PSP.
I'm using the Imtoo DVD To PSP suite but other PSP conversion software should do the job as well.

It's always great to sit at home and watch some funny movies with friends, family, or even by yourself.
However, there are some that have to be watched at least once in a lifetime. From the days of Charlie Chaplain's silent comedies to the political satire of the 1990s, there's something for everyone when it comes to the best of all time.
10: The Odd Couple (1968)
Starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, this movie is about two best friends Felix (Lemmon) and Oscar (Matthau). After being kicked out and divorced, Felix (a compulsive cleaner) is forced to move in with Oscar who happens to be an outright slob. This is one of those funny movies that stand the test of time so well that it even spawned a couple of sequels in the 90s.
9: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
If you're a fan of funny movies and Marilyn Monroe, this musical is for you. Monroe plays Lorelei Lee, a showgirl dreaming of marrying a millionaire. After taking a cruise to Paris, she finds herself in a dilemma with Sir Francis Beekman (played by Charles Coburn), the wealthy owner of a diamond mine. The rest of the movie deals with Lorelei and her friend Dorothy getting back to the states to continue their search for the men of their dreams.
8: Before Sunrise (1995)
Starring Ethane Hawke, this romantic comedy takes place in Vienna where Jesse (Hawke) meets Celine (played by Julie Delpy) on a train and the two decide to spend a day with each other. However, what started as a one-night stand turns into something more. This is one of those funny movies that is heavy on the romance, but is written well enough to keep you watching and laughing until the end.
7: Bob Roberts (1992)
In this political mockumentary, Tim Robbins stars as Bob Roberts: a right-wing folksinger that is running for Senator of Pennsylvania. Even though Bob has a clean record and good looks, he's got a few secrets that may blow the election and his campaign wide open. However, he does what other deceiving politicians do: manipulate the media. With guest appearances from numerous actors, this is one of those funny movies that will make you think twice about the people you vote for (regardless of party affiliation)
6: Husbands and Wives (1992)
From the famous director (and star of the movie) Woody Allen, this movie tells a story about a couple who are having a rough time keeping their relationship intact. Gabe and Judy Roth (played by Allen and Mia Farrow) spend most of the movie arguing over the years they've been together and what they wish would've happened. All of this and more happens after they hear their friends Jack and Sally decide to get a divorce.
5: City Lights (1931)
If you wanted a good silent comedy with a side of romance in the 1930s, Charlie Chaplain was the man to look for. The movie tells a story about a blind girl, who regains her sight thanks to a misfit named "The Tramp" (Chaplain). The two of them fall in love and the rest of the movie is filled with all of the slapstick humor Chaplain was made famous for.
4: Life of Reilly (2007)
This documentary/stand-up performance feature stars the late and great Charles Neilson Reilly as he performs a one-man show. In between, he also reveals stories about his childhood and the good & bad times he had being a gay actor in Hollywood.
3: The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Based on the play by Phillip Barry, this romantic comedy starred Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant as a bride-to-be and a magazine reporter. Tracy Lord (Hepburn) is getting married to a coal executive and the wedding is becoming the talk of the town. So much so that Spy Magazine sends out one of their reporters and Tracy's ex, Dexter Haven (Grant), to cover the event.
2: Modern Times (1936)
Charlie Chaplain plays a disgruntled factory worker who hates his job and his boss (who watches their every move from the comfort of his office). He meets a girl, falls in love, and the two have dreams of living in the suburbs happily ever after. This was not only one of the best funny movies of all time, but it was also Chaplain's last silent film.

Signing Time Volume 1: My First Signs DVD Best Review

I started trying to teach my daughter with a mommy/baby sign class when she was around 6 or so months, and it took several months before she would sign anything back. I stayed with the basics, like eat and more. I figured there was no point in moving on if she doesn't want to use these two very common words. She did start signing back eventually, and I wanted to find away to foster this and continue with something that can be repeated. I bought volumes 1-3 of Signing Time, and she did seem to like them, but as with all infants and young toddlers, she has the attention span of a gnat. After several watches of each volume, she really started to tune in more, and started to get excited when her "friends" Alex and Leah were coming on. She was learning sign and her words at the same time. We then bought volumes 4-6. By 18 months, she knew over 30 words verbally, and about 10 in sign that she didn't say, plus there was some overlap. Now she'll be turning two next month, and she's been learning 1-4 words a day for a few months, sometimes both in sign and verbal. She LOVES these DVDs. In the past couple of weeks, she's been handing them to us to play, and calls them "Tummy Tum" and even does the signs for "Signing Time". When she points to the TV and asks for music, she means Signing Time. She squeals in excitement when these are on, and she dances to all the songs. She really does try to watch full episodes too, but she does get distracted easily still. These have helped her learn her words and her letters, as well as numbers just a bit, and we all learn sign language.

I have found signing to be very handy when she can't pronounce the English quite right, or when she adopts the same verbal word for two or more things. It's also handy in a movie theater, when she can't really talk but needs to tell me she wants to eat. Or when we're in a situation where she doesn't feel like talking, so she'll sign instead. It HAS NOT "virtually eliminated" the terrible twos as Rachel says in one or more of these DVDs. She definitely has her moments, but when I know she is capable of communicating, but is refusing, it's easier for me to ignore her until she signs or verbalizes what she wants.

My one complaint is that my daughter seems to identify a bit too much with Leah, and pronounces some words as Leah does. I'm sure this is transitory, which is why I have not deducted any stars. It's up to me to correct these things, and I know there will be plenty of other sources for mispronunciations as she grows up. It's why I don't like Baby Bear on Sesame Street, because I don't want my daughter learning to pronounce words like the character does. Leah, in a DVD like this, makes sense, as the audience will most certainly include deaf children, or friends of deaf children. And those of us who can hear will need to learn how they might pronounce something so we can make sense of it. It's like adjusting yourself to any accent. When you know where the person is from, it's easier to understand what they say.

I will say that in Volume 4, Rachel appears a bit low energy. My daughter hasn't noticed and doesn't care, so I'm not deducting stars for that either.

Jason Statham has been in his share of odd movies and this ones no exception - most people even looking at this title have seen the first one and have an idea of what to expect - an over the top, "extreme" movie with a ridiculous story and some crazy action sequences. If that's what you want, this is the movie for you to get. If you're looking for a masterpiece movie with a serious story, step away now!

(Possible spoilers for the first 5 minutes of the movie (including the end of Crank 1))

The first movie ends with Statham falling out of a helicopter and smacking the concrete below, and that's just where this one begins (literally!) - being Crank, he lives and just gets up to walk away from it. He's quickly taken away to have his heart removed to be implanted into someone else (if he can live through everything in the first film, it's gotta be something amazing!). With his heart gone, he's living off a very-poor-quality artificial one.. with a low battery which he constantly needs to power (and as you can imagine, that includes all sorts of nonsense methods) - he goes on a search to get his heart back. While all this seems crazy, this is just the first 5 minutes - along the way he runs into every odd person you can imagine. If this seems like the stupidest movie you've ever heard, stop reading now! If you're interested in that much, I think you'll enjoy the movie. It's a crazy ride, but an entertaining one (definitely not for kids).

The blu-ray is one of the best looking ones I've seen. I believe it was filmed with the RED cameras, and has a very sharp image throughout. This makes a wonderful demo piece for a nice HDTV!

Audio is also top notch - DTSHD 7.1 Master Audio. Crank it up! (no pun intended)

The extras are also very good - including a nice behind the scenes piece and even picture-in-picture commentary. Everything in HD, along with a digital copy for your ipod/iphone/ipad/itunes.

If you can enjoy the over-the-top movies like Deathrace, Smokin Aces and Gamer, this fits right in.

Here’s what this movie has going for it: gratuitous nudity, mindless violence, constant profanity, and a ridiculous storyline. As the action starts, Jason Statham’s Chev Chelios has not only survived the fall from a helicopter that ended the earlier film, but is now on the operating table, awake and watching as some Chinese villains harvest his "tart" in order to implant it in their aging leader (a wacky turn by David Carradine). Chev quickly dispatches the bad guys, but the fun’s just starting; the mechanical ticker they’ve put inside him needs constant recharging, so as Chev pursues the real organ, he must use whatever’s available (jumper cables, a police taser, a car cigarette lighter, high voltage power lines) to keep the fake one going. Storywise, that’s about it. But it’s plenty, as the filmmakers’ ultra-kinetic style--with its manic edits, cartoony subtitles, and other envelope-stretching effects--and amusing performances by Amy Smart (as Chev’s girlfriend), Dwight Yoakam (as a "doctor" who helps him figure out what’s happening), and others keep things going. No, Crank: High Voltage ain’t exactly Masterpiece Theater, but this is without a doubt one of 2009’s most entertaining films. --Sam Graham

did someone expect something else from this movie? had the trailers alone not give it away? how about the tagline "he died but then he got better".

this movie is one long love note to adrenaline action junkies. its a guy's guy movie. totally in your face over the top over to the point of hilarity action scenese after action scenes.

personally, i loved it (as i did the first one). granted its not for everyone, but if you like the trailer, you'll like the movie (its that but longer). so grab a couple beers and enjoy it with some friends.

I have seen several of his movies, and enjoyed his self-defense skills. However, with this movie it was disjointed; and didn't make sense to me - low budgeted. I only looked at this movie once, and now it rests at the bottom of my shredder. With decent movies I would share with others, but not this one. Didn't want it in my house. Sorry Jason, I didn't like this one. I think you can do better quality work. Please hold out for more decent action pictures.

You may think that a movie about the death of a man with ALS is going to be hard going but Morrie is no ordinary man. Played to perfection by Jack Lemmon, poignantly in his last screen role, Morrie is a retired University professor who wants to use his death to teach others how to live. Reunited with his fast-living former student, Mitch Albom, we see how his words and aphorisms turn Mitch from a nice but career-driven guy into someone more rounded and at peace with himself. Since the film is based on a true story - Mitch and Morrie are both real - it gives an added import to Morrie's words. The movie works due to its subtlety and its refusal to play-down the devastating effects of ALS. It also doesn't put Morrie on a pedestal; he has his dark moments and this makes his words more convincing. To know that he battles the same demons that we all do makes him less like a guru and more human. Although the film does carry a lot of wisdom, it never tries to preach. Mitch finds the lessons difficult and provides the sort of questions we might all have when faced with such statements as `We must love one another or die'. Ultimately, you feel Morrie succeeded in his wish to make his death a lesson in living and we must thank Mitch Albrom and the makers of this film, for bringing his words to us all.

I am NOT reviewing the DVD. Just the movie unless otherwise stated.

Excuse me, I was extremely sick while I was watching this movie and I couldn't pay as much attention as I usually could.

So anyways, how do I feel it is innovative? Most people say it is for the shots, which, definably it is. For a B&W film, it's absolutely beautiful. Everything is so craft fully filmed. The moving shots going up and down, just everything is beyond words for the shooting. It's the work on genius on it's shots, it planted the ultimate apple tree seed for the farmers of tomorrow to eat from and plant more seeds. See my symbolism?

And that's another way I think this was extremely innovative, symbolism. This was obviously done before, some of the all time greatest and favorite films before this were King Kong, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, Werewolf of London, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Nosferatu, The Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame (you can see I love horror movies of that time,) but all those wonderful titles of which I have not reviewed on this site all show symoblism in something of fantasy. A giant gorilla, a vampire, a zombie mummy, a werewolf, a shape shifter, a phantom, some of them were real but are outcasts, and thus were not seen very much at the time. Citizen Kane however, delivers the symbolism in a factor of the human perspective. There's also much more of it, in Frankenstein, the whole plot is one point of symbolism, however, this carries out like a book with multiple symbols in addition to that type. I haven't really explained it have I? You would haft to see it for yourself, which I highly recommend.

The scripting is very awesome. The idea of doing something, again, so familiar to us, is pure genius. Making it work so well. They didn't just flat out go flat, like some people these days do. But, they really did put the candy on the apple. They were also aware to make sure the candy stayed on the apple and not become it's own candy but to stay with the apple. Am I still symbolic or am I just a maniac? Oh, I haven't even talked about the greatest of things. It's done between two stories, the story of Charles Foster Kane is told through stories from his friends, and a newsreel. At the same time, we try to find out what his dying words "Rosebud" mean in the time after his death. So, they tell two stories at once. You pick any masterpiece from well, anytime but especially that time, you will probably not find that innovation. And you never really find out what Rosebud means until the end of the movie, and then, it's still done extremely symbolic and discreet.

So, this is extremely innovative. Probably one of the top 10 innovative movies of all time. I'd say, a collection of opinions would say that these movies are the top greatest not in a specific order. Citizen Kane, King Kong (1933), Transformers (1986), Jason and the Argonauts, Casablanca, Cloverfield, Alien, Godzilla (1954) and Frankenstein (1931).

So what is the rating? As an innovative picture and part of history, it by far deserves a 6/5. However, past the innovation, to an naive view, I'd say 4/5. Take it up to 5/5 between the two. I, Da Ca$hman signing off.

Almost Lives Up... - Marie J. -
Whenever people start proclaiming something 'the greatest ever', I always get a bit wary. One, because hype is usually, well, based on hype and not fact, and it eventually becomes self-sustaining (ie people jump on the bandwagon of acclaiming something, just because they feel all the 'critics' have done so). Two, because even if it isn't overblown too much, I am usually disappointed when I had my hopes in the sky.

'Citizen Kane', well, I think it's hard to make its case as the greatest movie ever made, but it *is* Damn good. Do yourself a favor, and don't just watch it once, pass judgment, and reference it to your friends every once and a while just so you can feel Cultured. Actually THINK about this movie. ^-^ I promise you it's worth your time. I watched the documentary about it, read various reviews/essays about it, then re-watched it...only then did its scope truly sink in. "Gee," I can hear you saying. "Shouldn't something truly Great strike you the first instant you see it?" Yes, I agree, but truly great things also require digestion. This movie is Good upon first viewing, and becomes Great when you give it the time it deserves.

Quite apart from the movie, the story behind how it was made was also larger than life. Do yourself another favor, and read up about the Orson Welles - William Rudolph Hearst clash. It's Fascinating, and sheds another layer of light on this fantastic film.

My only negative comment as that the DVD skipped a little (straight out of the box!). Apart from that, Highly recommended.

MY CITIZEN KANE EXPERIENCE - Will Munney -
Here's my review of Citizen Kane:

When I was in high school, I had an English teacher who was tenured and never missed an opportunity to take advantage of her days off, which were often. Whenever she did so, her lesson plan instructions to her substitutes were simple and clear - she would merely leave a movie for the sub to pop into the vcr, and we would sit for an hour and watch.

Trouble was, even if it were a movie that we'd get into, she'd invariably come back the next day, and so we only ever watched the first hour of all these movies, unless we went and sniffed them out on our own dime. So in a sense, it was worse to enjoy the movie than not.

She'd always give us the heads-up as to when she would be taking the following day off, and also inform us which movie she'd be leaving for us to watch. One such day, she told us it'd be Citizen Kane.

I've always been somewhat of a prankster. Not on the professional level or anything, like a Bin Laden. More of a leisurely hotfooter. So I formulated my own lesson plan, and the next day I snuck in my own movie, which was The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell. A friend of mine was in on it, and while he looked out, I switched the movies in the vcr.

The substitute told us we were going to watch Citizen Kane, and out went the lights and on came the movie, which, as you have been informed, was not Citizen Kane.

So here's the thing: I thought for sure that as soon as the sub realized it was the wrong movie, he'd put the brakes on it, and then I'd `fess up to the gag, everyone would have a good laugh, and then the real movie would be cued up, and that would be the end of it. But on this day, this particular sub was apparently stupider than a lot of people, because all he did was say, "Oh - I guess it's not Citizen Kane today. I guess it's The Hitcher." And the whole class sat rapt and watched a movie they could truly get behind for once. Even when the finger turned up in the french fries, this sub just didn't understand how the forces of the universe were barking at him to wake up.

Well, it was a good gag, a solid gag, and when it was over, I thought it would stay over. But then, a few classes later in the day, the vice principal and a couple of other people I'd never seen before stormed into my class, spotted me and dragged me out of the class for a chat. It seems someone in that English class spilled the beans. In the vp's office, he talked at me while the unrecognized people simply stood there, wordlessly taking it all in. And he didn't ever ask why I did it. He just seemed intent on learning how I did it.

He suspended me for the next day, almost as an afterthought. We never saw that sub again, and from then on, whenever the English teacher took a day off, there would always be a more substantial and engaging lesson plan in place in her absense, which she would have to address upon her return, and which seemed a terrible inconvenience to her.

When I got home that day, my dad was cleaning the swimming pool. I told him I had been suspended. He asked what for, and I told him. "Oh" is what he said. Then he continued cleaning the swimming pool, which I swam in the next day, which, as I have explained, was a day off.

nothing i could possibly add but my vote in most instances . especially here . intro by TCM's Robert Ozborne (always a pleasure) and closed captions on this vhs . aspect ratio is the same weather vhs or dvd so i sprung for the small potatos . this probably marks about my 5th viewing . i wish the make up department had spent a bit more time on Mr. Welle's prosthetics . oh well . a true "must see" for curious young people with a passion for film .

I bought this for my mom's birthday this year. I started watching it almost immediately, and liked it right away. This is truly a great movie. Orson Welles shines in the title role (and also directed this film), and this is a movie that he will always be identified with. The acting is superb and is wonderfully restored from the highest quality surviving elements. The movie starts out with a newsreel. The second disc contains a documentary titled The Battle over Citizen Kane, and that is definitely worth a look as well. Two thumbs up....WAY UP to Mr. Welles and the rest of the cast as well.

Movies are a creative world of imagination and wonder. And does anything evoke this feeling of wonder more than castles? They represent power, wealth, mystery and many other things so they make a perfect setting for movies not just about knights but movies about many other things.
Castles and Movies - A history intertwined
Medieval castles have been used in movies since the earliest movies were made. The silent horror movie Nosferatu that was made in 1922 was filmed in Oratu castle. This beautiful and very ominous castle was built on the Orava River in Slovakia around the fourteenth century. The use of medieval castles continues to this day with many scenes from contemporary movies including the Harry Potter movies being filmed in castles.
Scottish Castles in the Movies
Scottish castles are a very popular setting for movies that take place in the middle ages or require a really old and medieval feeling. One of the most popular castles for this is castle Eilian Donan which has been used in many movies such as Highlander, Highlander End Game, and the James Bond movie The World is not Enough where it was the northern base for the British Secret Service. Another popular Scottish castle for filmmaking is Doune Castle, which was used extensively in the making of the cult classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Eastern European Castles
Eastern Europe has many castles that have found their way into movies and one of the most famous, and oldest, is Spis Castle in Slovakia. It was built in the twelfth century and has been the setting for movies such as Dragon Heart, Phoenix, Kull the Conquerer, The Lion in Winter and The Last Legion.
British Castles in the Movies
There are many British castles, and there are many movies that feature British castles. These movies tend to be more about the later middle ages and the Victorian era where the castles serve as a lush setting for the political and social intricacies of the times. Two excellent examples of this are the movie Shakespeare in Love, which was filmed in Broughton Castle and Remains of the Day, which was filmed in Powderham Castle. This Victorian era use of British castles wasn't exclusive though. There are many English castles that have a feel of the middle ages and Old Wordour castle was used as the ancestral home of Robin Hood in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
Other Countries and other Medieval Castles
Some other other countries with medieval castles that have been used in movies include the Italian Rocca Calascio Castle found in the Abruzzo province and used in the filming of the 1985 Michelle Pfeiffer movie Ladyhawke. Germany has many medieval castles that have been used in movies and Sean Connery's The Name of the Rose was filmed in and around Eberbach Cloister on the Rhine River.
Harry Potter
The Harry Potter movies, which oscillate between the modern world and a fantasy medieval world, use many of England's gothic structures to achieve the right setting. And one of the most famous of these locations is Alnwick Castle.
Medieval Castles from around the world have been used quite extensively in movies. They communicate a wide variety of expression, mood, and atmosphere. And have been used in movies that date back to the period of a thousand years ago, movies of the Victorian era, and even movies of modern times. In 1955, "The Seven Year Itch" starring Marilyn Monroe, was the first "edited for television" movie. This event was a milestone in the history of movie and video distribution. No longer did we have to go to a theater to see a movie.
In the 1980s, movie rentals, made possible with the widespread availability of videocassette recorders, became popular. Eventually, Blockbuster Video emerged as the movie rental king. Now, however, Blockbuster, hurt by the emergence of the home delivered rental and the pay-per-view movie, is more than a billion dollars in debt.
NetFlix pioneered the home delivered movie rental, an offshoot of the movie rental business, in 1999. NetFlix now offers more than 100,000 TV show and movie titles from their library. Wal-Mart, DVD Avenue, and Blockbuster now also offer DVD rentals at rates ranging from $9 up to $18 per month. With these services, the media (DVD format) is usually selected online, but delivered and returned through the mail. NetFlix currently has more than 8 million subscribers, with a goal of 20 million subscribers by the 2012.
Pay-per-view (PPV) service from a cable or satellite service provider is a form of movie download, only the signal does not travel over the Internet. The primary limitation for these services is the number of movies available. But PPV in this format is very popular. According to Kristie Fortner (Rentrak VP), 2007 orders of free on demand movies were up 66 percent, orders of subscription programs like Showtime or HBO were up 23 percent, and PPV movie rentals were up more than 40 percent.
Online (Internet) downloaded movies appear to be the dominant delivery technique of the future. Vudu, TiVo, Apple's iTunes, NetFlix, and Amazon.com currently offer video content via a broadband Internet connection. However, the number of movies in the download libraries is a bit less than the DVD libraries, with about 10,000 movies now available for download on NetFlix.
Most of the services are either offering movies in HDTV format, or planning to do so soon. Video quality is difficult to compare between the different services. The video compression algorithm, called a Codec, plays a significant role. The best objective method to compare signal quality is bit-rate. Prices are coming down for the equipment needed for these services. Vudu slashed the price of their set-top box to $99 for the 2008 Christmas season (from about $300), but $50 of movie credits needed to be purchased with the hardware.
Kudos to Vudu for their online service. The interface has been compared to IMDB.com (a movie-buff website). You see an actor, select the resume, and you can see what other movies they've been in, and easily find your selection. It's makes the process absolutely pleasant.
A significant downside of video downloads in the unavailability of recent releases. Movies are generally unavailable for at least a month after release, in order to protect the brick and mortar movie theater market. This is unlikely to change, at least in the near-term.
According to Joshua Danovitz (TiVo), the issue of download limits differs in each country. In the United States and parts of Asia, bandwidth capacity is still available and Internet users have fewer constraints, while other countries, including Canada, the ISPs are starting to restrict users bandwidth consumption. The problem will only get worse with the increased popularity of video downloads. Today, more than half of Internet bandwidth utilization in the United States is peer-to-peer, and most of that is video download. Peer-to-peer traffic is notoriously hard to control.
It is likely that the movie distribution business will follow the path blazed by the audio distribution business. The only reason for the time lag is that video files are much larger, and the Online capability was not yet ready.

From time to time, we see so many horror movies come and go. Spooky, haunted houses, serial killers, slashers, maniacs, mentals, satanic and many others have been pictured in the movie. A lot of sub genres, a lot of remakes, a lot of variations, twist and all that can easily be found through the ages. Yeah, it's all true. But have we ever thought where it all came from?
Or how does the horror movies genre change from time to time?
For you who share the same passion about horror movies, and want to know the road that have been travelled by Horror movies, allow me to have the honor to be your guide. Buckle up, here we go.
Where It All Began
The year was 1922, place: German. I can say that it was the birth of horror movies. W Murnau started the terror and fear thru Nosferatu, nosferatuthe
story about bloodsucking vampire. It wasn't the first vampire movie, as in 1896 Georges Melies made Le Castle Du Diable, but Nosferatu was the first movie where we saw vampire destroyed by sunlight. This one boasted remarkable animalistic makeup that has not been replicated, even with modern
technology. Dozens of vampire movies followed after that. In 1931 Universal Studio launched 2 legendary horror movies, Dracula with Bela Lugosi and Frankenstein with Boris Karloff. Both of the movie became a classic and very successful. Boris Karloff even became a legendary name in horror movies history. The Mummy (1932) a silent picture with horror icon Boris Karloff in the title role, remains a classic, with unforgettable make-up and atmosphere. In 1935, the sequel of Frankenstein,
The Bride Of Frankenstein was made.This isn't silent anymore.
Psycho
During 40's the world's on war, and it has changed the genre. Horror was almost forgotten as patriotic movies and war has taken the place. It slowly raised again around 50's, where comedy and musical movies ruled. There were good ones took place at this time, House of Wax is one of the example. 1960 was the time for Hitchcock to make a memorable movie: Psycho. Too bad, this is the only horror movie by Hitchcock, cuz then he made lots of suspence thriller goodies like Rear Window, Vertigo,North by Northwest,Dial M For Murder that kinda changed the genre again. And remember, spaghetti western Movies in the late 60's also had its moment.
The 70's
This is the most creative year of Horror movies.Unlike before, horror movies got big exploration, where so many variation of story and evil came in. Note there were lots of controversy and protest happened here.The Exorcist (1973) for example showed disgusting scenes that never been imagined before, like the green puke to the face transformed to evil. This movie was controversial when Catholic Church protested that the demon cast-out in the movie was against the code of conduct. The shining, that based on Stephen King's novel was one of the best one during 70's. Later on from this decade to 80s and 90s, lots of movies was made based on his scary novel such as Carrie, Christine, Cujo, It, , Cat's Eye, Dream Catcher, are the example. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) was a low budget movie that reached a great result. This one introduced "the slasher movie" to the world that later followed by Halloween (say hi to Michael Myers) , Friday the 13th, Scream in the 80's and 90's and so on. Omen is a bonechillin' movie that can still give
you nightmare even with today's technology of making movie.Simply unforgettable. Amityville Horror, based on the true story was the first movie that took place in the actual location. The report said a lot of bizzare and dreadful things were experienced by cast and crew in location.
The 80's
Freddie Kruger
This is the decade of madness. All gory stuff were shown sadistically for viewing. cutted off body parts were seen everywhere. Nightmare on Elm Street that launched Freddy Krueger to horror hall of fame, and Jason Voorheyes slashing games in Friday the 13th are one of the example. These two had some of their sequels during 80s, together with 3 of Halloweens. And remember how Italian horror movies that have a very sick super bloody vision? Count Romero and Argento for this category. This is also the era where horror expanded to tv.
The 90's
Funny thing happened in 90s. There's a tendency of self defense and self actualization by horror character on terror they have made to people. For example Ghost, Bram Stocker's Dracula that told the story about Count
Dracula's painful love to Mina, or Interview With Vampires that unlocked the mystery of vampire lives. Scream started a new genre, teen horror movies, slashing-serial-killer-who-did-it,which soon followed by I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, and some more. A note in 1999, an independent movie Blair Witch Project became a big phenomena,using a documentation technique to give us fear,tense and mental disturbance. This one inspired some other movies like St.Francisville Experiment, The Lamarie Project and
tv series Freaky Links.
2000's
Ringu
Still too early maybe to talk about horror movies in 2000s, but looks like Hollywood has running out of ideas. They are trying to widen up their view to see new ideas outside that can give new vision on the term of horror. The Ring, remake from Japanese movie was their first success. Followed by The eye, and some other remakes from Asian cinemas.
This decade seems being led by Japan and Korea, by making so many horror movies with lack of effects or gory blood but still successfully tortured our feeling. They don't go with the Hollywood pattern, they just dig everything else that hasn't been touched yet. Thailand is also emerging as a good horror maker. Indonesian movies too, with amusing number of horror movies every year. We also mark the decade 2000 for the decade of sequels and remakes too, such as Halloween H2O, Freddy vs Jason, modern version of Bram Stocker's Dracula, Dracula 2001,
Halloween Resurrection, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , House of The Dead, The Amityville Horror and so on.
While the effort to combine some genres and produce something new has still been going on. Saw for example, combine the psycho thriller ala Hitchkock with slasher, sadistic, bloody and graphic scenes.
My prediction? I think this decade will continue to do so. Hopefully in the next decade we will see some new approach, style and way to present horror movies. Let's wait and see where the horror movies continue their path.

Robert De Niro's Pre-Production Movies

When I saw Robert De Niro in "the Godfather Part II" I was impressed but it was not until I saw him in "Taxi Driver" that I became a huge fan of this artist. Indeed, he is an artist that comes so well prepared for his roles that when he has the vehicle to drive, he takes it home as a true winner. 6 Oscar nominations and 2 Oscars in his trophy case proves his peers also think the same as I do. He is truly one of the greatest actors of all time.
I did some research for Robert De Niro's pre-production movies and found that there were 3 movies in the pre-production stage and another 3 in post production that have yet to be released.
The movie in pre-production that I suspect might just give De Niro another Oscar nomination is the movie "Selma". Directed by Lee Daniels this film is based on the events in Selma, Alabama surrounding the issues of voting rights and desegregation resulting in civil rights marches. Lyndon Johnson and Martin Luther King are strong components in the film but the role Robert plays that I think he will be outstanding in is Governor George Wallace. I cannot wait to see this movie!
The next two movies in pre-production are so much in their infancy that very little information is available. According to reports by Nikki Finki of the Deadline website De Niro will be doing a sequel to "Midnight Run" in the near future as well as "Another Night in Suck City", to be directed by Paul Weitz and was written by Nick Flynn. This Flynn movie is actually a story of Flynn in the late 20s when he was working in a homeless shelter. This could turn out to be another great role for De Niro.
As I said earlier, when I was researching Robert De Niro's pre-production movies, I also saw 3 movies in post production, "Stone", "Machete", and a sequel to "Meet the Fockers". The latter 2 movies I am not as interested in as "Stone".
"Stone" is a psychological thriller, a genre that I think Robert excels at. He plays the part of a correctional officer and teams up with Ed Norton who plays the part of an arsonist who is up for parole. De Niro is seduced by Norton's wife played by Milla Jovovich. De Niro and Norton paired up in the movie "The Score" back in 2001 and I think they work together great. This should be an excellent movie.
Robert De Niro will play Senator McLaughlin in the movie "Machete" with Danny Trejo playing the title role. Cheech Marin (as the priest), Michelle Rodriguez (as Luz) and Jonah Hill (as Julio) also make up an excellent cast. I am on the fence with this one. It could be an excellent film and I am sure De Niro will excel in his role as usual but I am not convinced this movie has a lot of potential.
Then there is the sequel to "Meet the Fockers". Both the original and the sequel have outstanding casts when you throw in members like Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand as the Focker family. It was a good comedy but I personally wish they had cast a different actor as Greg Focker as I was never a big Stiller fan.
I also noticed when checking out Robert De Niro's pre-production movies that he has several movies as a director in pre-production, but that will be the subject of a different article.

Atlantis - The Lost Empire Best Review

Despite getting alot of flack from animation buffs, Disney made a genuine effort to make a musical-free adventure movie in the spirit of Raiders. Even though very influenced by the works of Jules Verne, and the art stylings of Mike Mignola(Hellboy), this steampunk film was brilliantly animated and delivers in ways that the last Indiana Jones movie didn't.

Taking place in 1914, Milo Thatch is an expert in cartography, but unfortunetly stuck working in the boiler room of a history museum. After failing to convince his curators to investigate some recent findings he believes will proove the existence of the lost kingdom of Atlantis, he is luckily hired an eccentric millionaire who was an old explorer buddy of his grandfather. Milo becomes part of an excavation team going in a totally ahead of its time submarine to find Atlantis, commanded by the opportunistic Rourke. Using an ancient journal, they track their way underwater to a tunnel that is supposed to lead to their goal, but they're attacked by a giant mechanical sea monster and have to abandon their submarine into smaller mini-subs. They manage to find a series of underground caverns, which eventually leads to the actual city of Atlantis. Milo and the others are shocked to discover that there is an actual living civilization of people there who can conveniently speak English. They are turned away by the xenophobic Atlantian king, but his daughter Kida(who is Disney's finest Princess, and the first black one!)befriends the nerdy-as-hell Milo, and together they manage to decipher where the mysterious power source that supports their society, and has kept them alive for the last few millenia. However, its revealed that Rourke and most of his team were really looking for the power source too, which is a mystic floating crystal, and after taking the king hostage, they make their way to the crystal chamber. Kida becomes infused with the crystal's powers, and Rourke makes off with her, leaving the king dying of a gunshot wound. Milo gets some of the remaning crew along with the other Atlanteans to go after them with some reactivated flying machines. After a pretty intense chase scene, they catch up with Rourke and stop him. The crystal is restored, and Kida becomes the new tribal leader. Milo decides to stay behind(who wouldn't want to spend eternity with a hot bikini babe?!)while the other explorers make it back to the surface with a bunch of treasure.

Atlantis was a serious step up from some of Disney's other action/adventure films. Granted, ones like Aladdin, The Black Cauldron, and Treasure Planet had decent elements of thrills & spills, but Atlantis went that extra couple of yards to make it real swashbuckling ride. There's a fine use of CGI along with traditional 2d Disney animation, although its one of the few ones they did in anamorphic widescreen which totally broadens the scope of visual experience for an underwater adventure. The movie also has one of the finest casts in a Disney film, with Michael J. Fox as Milo, James Garner as Rourke, veteran voice actress Cree Summer as Kida, Leonard Nimoy as the king, and Jim Varney in his last film role. If you passed on this film when it was in the theatres, make sure to catch it on DVD(and hopefully soon on Blu-Ray). Even though you can sorta skip on the sequal.

Atlantis - The Lost Empire Specifications

The Disney Studio was built on innovation in animation, so it seems ironic that Atlantis is both a bold departure and highly derivative, borrowing heavily from anime, video games, and graphic novels. Instead of songs and fuzzy little animals, the artists offer an action-adventure set in 1914: nerdy linguist Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) believes he's found the location of the legendary Lost Continent. An eccentric zillionaire sends Milo out to test his hypothesis with an anachronistic crew that includes tough Puerto Rican mechanic Audrey (Jacqueline Obradors), demolition expert Vinnie (Don Novello), and butt-kicking blond adventurer Helga (Claudia Christian). When they find Atlantis, its culture is dying because the people can no longer read the runes that explain their mysterious power source--but Milo can. Nasty Commander Rourke (James Garner) attempts to steal that power source, leading to the requisite all-out battle.
Atlantis offers some nifty battle scenes, including an attack on a Jules Verne-esque submarine by a giant robotic trilobite and fishlike flying cars. But the film suffers from major story problems. If Princess Kida (Cree Summer) remembers her civilization at its height, why can't she read the runes? Why doesn't Milo's crew notice that the Atlanteans live for centuries? The angular designs are based on the work of comic book artist Mike Mignola (Hellboy), and the artists struggle with the characters' stubby hands, skinny limbs, and pointed jaws. The result is a film that will appeal more to 10-year-old boys than to family audiences.

Atlantis- Animated Feature - Aaron Douglas Parks - Chicago
This animated movie deserves more credit than what it has apparently received. Yes, at times the story could be fairly cheesy, but I really appreciated the way the scenes were visually composed and the overall visual imapact that was acheived. I feel that from this standpoint it was truly magnificent. Also, I appreciated the efforts that went into the linguistics aspects of the Atlantian language that is spoken throughout. The linguistic substance really added so much to the movie and gave richness to the experience of watching it.
For those who appreciate the visual art that goes into animated features and how an expansive imaginary world rendered well can draw in and welcome the viewer to the story, this movie can be appreciated on multiple levels.

Underappreciated - Red One - Washington, DC
Another of the Disney flicks that is probably very under appreciated. Its a good story with great animation and worth watching.

A DISNEY FILM THAT PACKS ONE HELLUVA PUNCH 9.25 OUT OF 10 - ACEMAN1 - Ripon, California
Oh Disney, where has your creativity gone? This film is one of your most bold efforts and easily one of the best Disney films I've ever seen. Now I'm being showered in crap with egregious efforts like Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons. I'm disappointed with the response this film received. It didn't do very well in terms of critical response (46% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and a 52 out of 100 on Metacritic), and while moviegoers in general were positive, this film still got flack from a good number of people. This is probably one of the most underrated Disney efforts next to The Black Cauldron and Dinosaur, and it deserved so much better.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Year: 1914. Milo Thatch doesn't have much going for him in life, but he is obsessed about finding the lost city of Atlantis. But then when he goes home to his apartment, he finds a mysterious woman sitting inside and she wants him to meet her employer who wants to make an offer with him. What ensues is a massive (And epic) adventure to find Atlantis, but as things go along, things get more sinister, and then it is realized that Atlantis must be saved.
MUSIC: This music is phenomenal and fits along with the mood flawlessly. From its quiet status to its booming orchestral score, it rocks quite simply.
ACTING: All of the actors were really good and I can't think of anything wrong with their performances. They were witty and they managed to feel alive and they actually had different and unique personalities to each of them.
ACTION: This is the best part of the film. The action sequences are absolutely spectacular, to the point of where you sometimes wonder how this film didn't get slapped with a PG-13 rating. It's explosive at every turn and this film easily has some of the best action scenes I've ever seen. They are most certainly a sight to behold. Plus, I loved how everything was designed and everything felt so imaginative.
OVERALL: The only problem with this film is the fact the story didn't go as far as it could have. But other than that, this film is incredible, spectacular, and a feast for the eye wonder that should not be missed.
THE GOOD: The music, the animation, the acting, the action scenes, and a very intriguing plot.

Friendship isn't always easily described. The Eskimos, they say, have a hundred different words for snow. Unfortunately, the English language isn't quite as innovative, though it has vast opportunities to differentiate meaning. Certainly, Love is one of those opportunities. And so, too, is Friendship.
Instead of different words, however, we're stuck with simple adjectives. Close friend. Best friend. Childhood friend. Intimate friend. Trusted friend. Beloved friend. But whether you use adjectives or different words, few could deny the nearly infinite meaning in such a simple word.
Friends are special people. We can't pick our family, and we're sorely limited in the number of them at any rate. Society and mores (and often our own conscience) dictate we select a single mate. But our friends can be as diverse and infinite as the adjectives we choose. Our friends, in a very real sense, reflect the choices we make in life.

This movie showed how the life of family of very strong friends get disrupted, when two of the friends realize that their love for one another goes beyond the confines of their conventional relationship.
An Officer And A Gentleman (1998)

The Dark Crystal Best Review

This movie is rated PG for scary monsters and violence, including the deaths of several sympathetic characters. My recommendation is that parents shouldn't let small children see it. One reviewer here wrote that this movie traumatized him when he was five. It does have some nightmarish imagery. It looks like a kiddie movie because of the puppets, but don't let the puppets fool you, it really is not a kid's movie.

Classic mythic stories have certain elements and structures which set them apart from melodramas or action-adventures; they're journeys filled with mentors, heralds, shape-shifters, shadow-figures, hidden powers and secret knowledge. The Dark Crystal has these and one can arguably label it a modern hero myth. I will do so.

The hero of this myth is Jen, who is to all appearances the last of his race - the Gelflings, elf-like people who once had cities and high culture on Thra, a faraway planet. The rulers of Thra are called the Skeksis, nasty reptilians who are themselves dying out and whose numbers are down to just nine. Jen's family was killed by the Skeksis' minions, the Garthim soldiers. The mirror opposites to the Skeksis are the Mystics, who have been hiding Jen, thus tricking the Skeksis into believing the Gelflings are all dead. In Skeksi-think, this is a good thing, for the Skeksis fear Gelflings. There's a prophecy about a Gelfling destroying Skeksis, so the Skeksis attempted the genocide of the race. They believe they have succeeded, and are unaware of Jen's existence.

And thereby hangs a tale.

Planet Thra is vividly imagined in textured detail; a second viewing reveals things one missed the first time around. There are all sorts of fascinating creatures running around in the corners of the frames, and there's even a live "dessert" that scampers across a Skeksi dinner table as the lizards try to catch it. On Thra, life takes surprising and bizarre forms.

No human appears on the screen, all the characters are puppets. In a few scenes, live actors in costume do duty to show characters at full-length. The Skeksis and Mystics are amazingly complex and sophisticated puppets which each require entire teams of puppeteers to bring to life. The lifelike detail with which these are crafted is truly remarkable. They each have unique wrinkles, crow's-feet and scars, they can frown, smile, laugh, blink, wink, sneer, roll their eyes...they require skillful acting from the puppeteers, and it's here that I must commit my heresy. I'm sorry to have to say that Jim Henson is not the best puppeteer in this movie. In the special features, Henson is shown in a filmed interview in which he said that he wanted to make the characters as lifelike as possible, and that in doing some of his other characters (such as Kermit the Frog) over the years, he'd used actions and mannerisms which were broad and exaggerated, but for Dark Crystal he had to adopt a different style of puppetry which wouldn't look "puppety", to use his word. He failed on that front, in my opinion. There was no time in which Henson's puppetting of Jen didn't make me think of a puppet. By contrast, we do get to see a female Gelfling named Kira, puppetted by Kathryn Mullen. Mullen's portrayal of Kira is quite believable. She imparts mannerisms and attitudes to Kira which make Kira seem very female and real. There's just an ineffable something in a tilt of the head or a hand gesture that "sells" the character, and Mullen gave Kira those subtle qualities. It's interesting that in one of the special features, Mullen says how she had to tell Henson how to make Jen more lifelike. There is also Frank Oz's performance of Aughra, a sort of witch, I suppose one might say, though there's more to her than that. Aughra is one of those personalities one doesn't soon forget. Think of Yoda on a caffeine high and you'll be in the ballpark. Oz gave Aughra both believability of action and motion, and an interesting, mysterious ambivalence - I was never sure which way Aughra would jump.

Myth is the oldest kind of storytelling in the world; the epic myth of Gilgamesh is the oldest known story on Earth. In five thousand years of myth-making since then, we've pretty much covered the variations on the form. As such, The Dark Crystal is nothing new. Joseph Campbell deconstructed the mythic story structure down to its component elements which he called the monomyth, and The Dark Crystal hews closely to the Campbellian monomyth right along with King Arthur, Achilles and Luke Skywalker. So, there's not much here in terms of story that we haven't seen before. Henson and company really put no new spin on the hero's journey, it's all fairly clear and straightforward. The structuring of the story, then, is competent, if just barely so. However, I have a bit of a nit to pick with some of the elements Henson wrote in. There are certain events which telegraph the ending to some extent, so that the end comes as no great surprise. In my view, this is a mistake. I think the ending would have been much stronger with a slight rewrite to keep the ending more of a surprise. Instead of the desired reaction, "Oh! - so THAT'S what this is about!" the reaction is more along the lines of "Yeah, they've been kind of driving toward that." It's too bad. The story would have been better without the telegraphing of the ending, I think. In my opinion, Jim Henson was an undisciplined and self-indulgent director who showed a predilection for things which weakened his stories (I could have screamed at the final thirty seconds of Labyrinth).

The puppets are many and varied. Again, there are all sorts of odd and wonderful creatures in this movie, everywhere you look. Each one of them required a clever new solution to the question "How to we put THAT on screen?!" Most of the things in this movie are what are called practical effects. These are distinguished from special effects in that special effects are added in post-production, after the principal photography is complete. Practicals are done on-set, with actual tangible objects in front of the camera. I would estimate the ratio of practical effects to special effects in this movie at maybe 20:1, but that's just my perception, I didn't make a systematic count. They used special effects only when there was no other way to show things.

This too is too bad in one case. There are creatures called landstriders which look for all the world like men on stilts because that's just what they are. I never for a moment bought into the landstriders. That was a case where special effects were called for. Henson should have called Ray Harryhausen out of retirement and used Dynamation stop-motion effects for the landstriders.

Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, once spoke about the Egyptian pyramids and said, "Ancient astronauts didn't build the pyramids. Human beings built the pyramids, because they're clever and they work hard."

This for me is the wonderful thing about The Dark Crystal; it's old-school fantasy filmmaking, with clever, hard-working humans meeting ten thousand problems with ten thousand innovative solutions to put a complex, impossible world on screen. No such cleverness is required today, processing power will do. Today, these problems would all have one answer: CGI. Skeksis - CGI. Garthim - CGI. Mystics, Gelflings, and weird mounds of dirt that eat unsuspecting passersby...CGI, CGI, CGI. If it doesn't look right, re-render it until it does.

A story is more than just a story, it's an artifact of human ingenuity and a child of the soul. The Dark Crystal is a monument to virtuosity, it's a stroke in our signature - a sharp, inventive stroke.

Jim Henson's fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn't take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Star Wars meets Muppets - D. J. Nardi - Washington, DC
I had mixed feelings about The Dark Crystal. The puppet animation holds up surprisingly well even in the age of digital animation. Some of the scenes are beautiful, such as the heroes rowing on the lake with papyrus. The movements are generally smooth and not jerky. It shows Jim Henson's genius with puppets. My problem with the movie is with the human side - the script and voice acting. Sometimes, it seems the scriptwriters got lazy and just copied scenes from Star Wars, including characters suspiciously similar to the Ewoks and Yoda. Some of the voices also seem a bit weak and lighty for their characters. Finally, the movie seems to want to be an epic, and has the makings of it, but is just too short at 1.5 hours to really be of epic proportions. I'd recommend The Dark Crystalfor kids who like fantasy/epics like Star Wars, but I don't know if it will appeal much beyond that audience.

I have always liked this movie and I had a copy on VHS. It was dark and detail-less. I purchased this Blu-Ray copy to replace my original and it is much better. Colors are truer, more details are visible and, although it is set on a dark canvas, it was much easier to see everything even in the darkest frames. Of course, the sound was incredible and much easier to hear even the slightest sound.

Am I the only one who noticed that they've edited this film? Just so we're clear, I LOVE this movie; I'm pretty obsessive about it. I've seen it 8 times in the theater (6 when it first came out) and own every single edition on every media platform, including PSP and iTunes. So when I finally sat down to watch the Blu-Ray edition, i noticed pretty quickly that they've changed the dialogue; Jen suddenly speaks a line in Aughra's laboratory that I've never heard.

Between this and the edited editions of Erik The Viking and The Last Unicorn, I'm wondering how much of my childhood is left intact. Shame on whoever decided to alter history. It wasn't necessary and this is not what I paid for.

As an action flick and thriller, it succeeds very well and right from the moment you press "play". Message-wise it is also interesting. Here we have a CIA guy who's been in the country 20 years and feels it would be in the country's best interest to instill what was left of the Iraqi militia in the new govt. There is logic in his reasoning as we witness a chaotic and war-torn Iraq in constant background. Then we have a solder (Damon) running around from site to site on a mission to find WMD and not finding any. A tip from a local guy who later becomes his personal translator leads him to the whereabouts of the head of the Iraqi army. When the soldier (Damon) comes up with a little black book listing the whereabouts of that former Iraqi general, he is faced with a decision about whom to give it to - the CIA guy or his own chain of command. As he seems to be getting the run around from his own command on these bogus WMD sites, he decides to hand it over to the CIA guy. Working with him Damon goes about looking to find and bring back the general. We feel Damon's frustration with not being able to find WMD and also his suspicion in whether or not there ever were any. Background being what it is we can also sympathize with his siding with the CIA guy. What gives this movie it's counterperspective though is Damon's Iraqi translator. HE doesn't want to see this general put into the new govt. When that stance is revealed, we suddenly question Damon's original and seemingly sensable quest - the Iraqi translator hates the general.

It's an interesting movie that makes you wonder about truth and fiction regarding the war. Not that the movie is the first thing that ever made anybody wonder about that. It's going to get under some people's skin because it takes true subject matter and mixes it with a fictious story - but again it'll have you wondering just how much of it is fiction. For example, I'd like to know if there was any truth in the so-called "Jordan talks" where according to the movie, the general told them there were no WMD but then it was reported back to Washington that according to same general - there were. In the beginning of the movie the soldiers are being led on their wild goose chase for WMD by instructions supposedly having been left by the general. Later we find out from the general himself that those things were never said. This being one of the special reasons Damon's chain of command wants him dead. Again, there are a lot of tidbits like this that help form the basis of the movie and whether or not these events have been culled from fact or fancy, you don't know. You know some of it's true, because they certainly didn't find WMD with that as justification for invasion basically and you know that troops are still there now. So, how much of this movie is fact and fiction will play with your mind a little. If it is a propaganda film, then it is a clever propaganda film. Either way though, it did entertain this reviewer.

Don't bother with this one. Very disappointed, I am a big fan of Damon, but not this movie.

Great action movie set in Iraq. - Dr.Blu - Asia
I really enjoyed the Bourne trilogy with Matt Damon directed by Paul Greengrass. I had read a lot of mixed reviews about how GREEN ZONE was not true to military standards & the filming was too much hand held filming giving you a bit of motion sickness. On the strength of the Bourne movies I bought the Blu Ray. I found the movie to be good in terms of Blu Ray quality but not excellent due to the hand held filming method & low light filming.
I found the movie itself to be very enjoyable and quite believable in regards to the storyline & political games Washington plays. Did Washington fabricate the WMD story? Maybe they did, maybe they did not........ but this slant is one possible truth that we probably will never learn. I did not see any anti-American or Anti-Military flavor to the movie. They just raise the possibility that some high placed people wanted the U.S. to invade Iraq with or without WMDs. It reflects the fact that military men & politicians blindly follow orders from higher up and do as they are told. Some men however question the orders they receive and look for the real underlying truth .

This movie is fiction based loosely on real events. I was not looking for a true to life documentary ........but just good escape entertainment.
Very entertaining film...... if you liked the Bourne movies you will likely enjoy GREEN ZONE.

Political with good action - Lewis R. Wygand - Florida
Although this Matt Damon movie is about the WMD we didnt find, that I believe were there and moved a while before 2003. It makes President Bush's claim and all of the other countries claims look wrong. I understand where Matt is comming from. I know his view and his politics. Though I do not agree with Matt I have to give him credit for being involved with such a good action flick. That is why I bought it ,for the action and it fits the bill for me

Great Movie - Liberty -
Paul Greengrass has done it again. The film is fast paced with a story line that is original and captivating.

The Pacific (HBO Miniseries) [Blu-ray] Best Review

When I talked to a 1st and 4th Marine Division vet, the reason combat accounts are often vague became very clear to me: "At Saipan, we did a FOUR day assault, which was... the most..." - as he trailed off, I could see his mind discarding a succession of words, and his eyes welled with tears as each attempt took him further back to places he didn't want to go - "... INTENSE... experience". His relief at finally finding that single word - finally free to pull away from the nightmares and resume his story - communicated volumes more to me than any mere adjective.

Very few units (never mind individuals) survived the entire Pacific war intact, and those who did can rarely afford to tell us much about it. Thus, in lieu of a single narrative, the producers of "The Pacific" instead pieced together three stories which, taken together, span the experience of the 1st Marine Division throughout World War Two. Leckie and Basilone's accounts cover Guadalcanal, Gloucester and leave in Australia while Sledge's account describes Peleliu and Okinawa, with flashes from Basilone describing life stateside and the landing at Iwo Jima.

Several negative early reviews suggest to me that understanding the brilliance of this miniseries requires patience. Indeed, upon a first viewing, "The Pacific" may appear muddled and disjointed as it forcibly juxtaposes three very different story lines at contradictory moments of dramatic inertia. First time viewers may believe the characters to be woefully underdeveloped, as most scenes appear to read as, "Some random guy in a helmet tells us this and that". These "guys in a helmet" are not only hard to identify in their combat gear, but also answer to a bewildering variety of names, nicknames, ranks and even rank slang. There are, of course, nitpicks, which are inevitable in a project of such massive scope: Leckie's romance central to Part 3 never ignites, American mortars seem to be more accurate that baseballs (even on the first shot), shell-shocked Japanese on the verge of starvation are somehow more energetic and cleanly dressed than Marines (or even Okinawan civilians) and the hasty exposition to Part 1 is quite awkward (yes, it's true that that the nation was gloomy, but it's difficult to imagine ANYONE - especially Chesty Puller - assuming the Japanese were on the verge of world conquest with their campaigns only 3 weeks underway!) The script is wretched, the drama is non-existent, the history execrable (what veterans in Australia must make of its treatment, or rather non-treatment, of their part in the campaign is unimaginable). The Pacific's flaws in conception and construction are far too numerous and deep to catalog. Suffice it to say that the few minutes of commentary from veterans and actual war footage which precede the dramatized part of each episode are infinitely more interesting and informative than anything which follows. In other words, the stagecraft is a huge letdown from even a peek at real soldiers and soldiering.

Not to mention, a solid third of the miniseries--at minimum--doesn't even take place in combat zones, but ranges from covering at length the home lives of characters in patrician Alabama, to reenacting at length a tepid romance between a Medal of Honor winner and a cook. In fact, the entire third episode--after the show's spent under two hours on Guadalcanal--follows soldiers on leave in Australia. And the finale is set almost exclusively in the United States. It's not as if the war against Japan was so dry or thin as to warrant or require plumping up with such filler.

I freely admit, and I'm happy to report that The Pacific does deliver a few moments of exhilarating drama. But these are so few and far between that they can't redeem what is otherwise an utterly worthless production. If it's a gripping account of the war in the Pacific you want to watch, you'll do worlds better with Ken Burns' The War, one of the best-made and most compelling documentaries I've ever seen.

Tom Hanks provides an ominous VoiceOver at the beginning of each episode of The Pacific, calmly informing us of the horrors the episode we were about to see would bring. For me, it was a somewhat scary experience, because I knew that what I was hearing was nothing more than a summary. And then the episode spiraled into the powerful theme song featuring a powerful orchestral score and charcoal drawings of soldiers in battle coming to life, scared amidst the hell of war. The DVD release of the Pacific bears my highest recommendation simply because the show is unrelenting in it's depiction of a very unrelenting Pacific theatre of WWII. James Badge Dale turns in one of the finest performances I have ever seen on television alongside Eugene "Sledgehammer" Sledge and the unforgettable, milestone psychopathic performance of Remi Malik as "Snaffu." While Steven Speilberg does not step behind the camera for a single episode the miniseries echoes the spirit of Saving Private Ryan. It is a masterpiece and carries my highest recommendation.
